Chapter 17: The Murderer
KIAN
Lain looks beyond displeased as I get down from the horseback, pulling his left arm with me since it is handcuffed with my right one. He scurries off from the horseback before he can go slamming onto the ground and face-plants himself.
He loves his face. I know it.
He is still scared of what happened earlier. It pleases me. I revel at the fear in his eyes. But it does a little subside the irritation and fury bubbling inside me and fluttering all over the place. So, I handcuffed him with me. I won’t let the man piss in peach.
He explained why he ran away but both of us know this is nothing but bullshit. Everything he said was a lie. Just like his name and identity. But I didn’t push it. Because for guys like Lain, there is something worse than death. And that is losing face.
I will humiliate Lain until he can’t take it anymore and burst into flame. I press my lips to prevent them from curving up and turning into a smile.
Lain started it. And I will be the one to end it. Simple conclusion for a simple game. I will be the king. Everyone knows that.
"You didn’t answer my question." Lain walks to my side, his face gleaming with disdain and displeasure.
"I did." I hum, "We are here to close the case."
"Why are we at Amanda’s house then?" Lain asks and I give him a look.
"Did you somehow run away with your brains and you forgot to return with it?" I look down at him.
He flushes the prettiest color of pink as he stutters to make up a reply, "N-No. I-I am not just thinking straight."
Acceptable. Because he is still scared to his bones.
"Then think straight." I tie the horse to a nearby tree trunk, dragging Lain with me everywhere with every move that I make.
"Amanda is the last victim possible in the capital right now." Lain starts with a disdained tone, looking disturbed with all the pulling and dragging. "So, the culprit will show up here tonight and will annihilate her." He concludes.
"Anything but the last part." I look up at the tall brick wall surrounding the house and look back at Lain, "We are saving the girl. Can you climb the wall?"
"I
could
" Lain replies, lifting his left wrist matter-of-factly, "but I
can’t
anymore."
I purse my lips and assess the brick wall again. Lain is tiny. Well, maybe not. Five feet and ten inches isn’t
that
small. But he is tinier than me anyway. I can pick him up easily and haul him everywhere I want. So, I do just that.
I pick him up by his waist and haul him over the wall. My movement is so stealthy, swift, and abrupt that I catch Lain off guard and he yelps. He is now on the thick wall, sitting there with a dazed and shocked expression. It makes me grin almost.
I then jump up the wall effortlessly and his eyes widen another friction. "How?"
I shrug my shoulder elegantly and jump down, dragging Lain down with me though I catch him before he can hit the ground.
"Are you playing with me?!" He gasps, wriggling out of my arms.
I offer him a smug grin in response. And duck behind a bush—of course, Lain in my tow—when I hear footsteps approaching. The guards pass by and we hold our breaths. They are pretty dull and incompetent so they don’t notice us.
"I still don’t get why we are sneaking in," Lain says as we move behind the trees soundlessly. I am impressed at how stealthy and professional Lain is. "You can just tell them that you want to guard Amanda."
"You remember the last time we tried that?" I stop beneath the window to Amanda’s bedroom, "The murderer never showed up. Because it knew that we were overseeing the situation. This time it will not know. Because no one besides you and I know what we are up to." I give him a look, "Besides, you don’t have the opportunity to leak the information anymore."
Lain stares back, "I didn’t do anything, much less leak any confidential information." There is truth behind his eyes but I am not letting it slide before getting back to him first.
"Yes. You just run away." I remark pointedly.
Pink flashes across his cheek, and he lowers his gaze, "I didn’t run away... I told you..." He meekly protests.
I can see him clearly under the moonlight. He looks spellbound and mesmerizing. If I weren’t ’me’, I would have been mesmerized and spellbound by him already. I fight to take my eyes off him. I am a man, I s

another man attractive.
"You are lying, Lain." My nostrils flare, "And we both know it. Stop wasting your breath. Prepare yourself for my inquiry when we reach the fortress. I may buy your ’excuses’ because I know you are not going to spill your actual intentions but I am afraid that convincing my aunt will be a tough job." My words are leached with sarcasm and slight irritation.
I am not going to do anything to Lain until his actions or words potentially threaten to cause any kind of damage to me. So, as long as he doesn’t, we are fine. He knows it. He is using it.
Jennifer told me to bring him back to the fortress before the sunset. But here I was, disobeying her orders for the first time in my life.
I should write it down.
"I will explain to her," Lain speaks unusually calmly for someone who is in deep shit.
I snort, "And as if she is going to buy your bullshit. Nice try buddy."
We stare down at each other. No one blinking. Our breaths are heavier than they should be, and my heart is beating a little faster than usual inside my chest. Until ice prickles my forehead and the temperature drops. Chill skates down my spine and my head snaps upward at the window of the bedroom. High on alert.
The murderer, she is here.
