Chapter 32: Familiar
LIAM
I can’t believe my ears, "I am sorry?"
"Make me your familiar." She repeats, stepping forward to stand before me.
"Why do you say this?" I raise an eyebrow, completely in disbelief.
"I am dead. And I have never been to the dark realm before." She says, her voice lacks the spark a normal human being has, so calm and devoid of any emotions. "And I don’t want to go there. But I cannot live here without being discovered for long. So I need you to adopt me."
I stare at her, she stares back even though I can’t see her eyes because of her blindfold. Though I doubt there is anything to see anyway.
"Not happening." I look down at my parchment. There is an ugly large bead of black on the paper where I paused my pen. I scowl.
"Why not?" She asks, without any trace of emotion.
Adopting familiar means, I am forming a blood pact with them. They will leave within my soul and we will share the same energy. They must obey me and do whatever I say. It sounds beneficial. But Crystal is a ghost and I doubt I am allowed to adopt her.
"You are a ghost," I say nonchalantly.
"So what?"
"Have you ever heard of any human adopting a ghost before?" I look up at her.
She shakes her head in a no gesture. "But I haven’t heard that they can’t." She reasons.
"Tell me why should I adopt you?" I quirk my eyebrows.
"Because I am useful?" She tilts her head a little to the side and replies though her reply is more like a question.
I blow out a breath and put my pen down on the table, "What will you do if I don’t adopt you?"
"I will haunt you." She replies simply, "Until you make me your familiar."
I give her a look of disdain, "And why did you choose me?"
"You helped me." She answers.
"I didn’t help you." I shake my head as I discard the paper that I just wasted, "I used you to achieve my goal."
"So use me again." She insists, "Better than being useless."
I stare at her, and she stares back. Her Saber is strapped to her back, and she looks much cleaner than the last time I saw her. Vengeance actually changes people it appears. I don’t know what vengeance changed for her, but it
did
change her.
"Listen, Crystal, I am still not sure about this." I get on my feet and stand in front of her. She is a good few inches shorter than me. "Aside from that, Kian won’t take it well."
This is true. Kian strictly forbade Crystal to come near us again. And then again, when did I start to obey him? Funny that he thinks I will listen to his orders.
"It is not like you obey the commander’s order, master." She says blandly.
I press my lips and give her a displeased look, "Don’t call me master."
"Yet." She adds.
I stare at her and she stares back. I at least heave a sigh of defeat.
"Fine." I scrub my face with my hand. "Give me your wrist."
She complies silently.
I bite the tip of my finger until I taste the copper blood on the tip of my tongue. I grimace at the taste. I then start to draw a pattern on her wrist. This is a magic circle. Her body is as cold as an ice bar.
Only people who can wield magic can have familiars. The greater your magic power is, the more familiars you can obtain.
After I am done drawing the circle, the circle starts to burn into her skin. She doesn’t flinch or show any visible reaction as the circle turns black and is now embedded in her white skin.
"You happy now?" I sit back down on the chair, feeling a surge of icy energy flood through my veins. An impact of forming a familiar pact.
She examines her circle for a while before nodding.
I draw another parchment to me and start to scribble.
***
Your Highnesses,
I am in deep shit. But I still not going to tell you what it is. Just to torment you. In any case, are you acquainted with the name ’Christopher ’? If you are let me know. I am sending my familiar to you. Trust her.
Liam Von Sylvyran.
***
I neatly fold the letter and shove it inside an envelope then seal it. I push the letter toward Crystal.
"Here."
"What is it?" She tilts her head as she examines the envelope.
"This is your first errand as my familiar," I say with an aura of authority, "Deliver it properly. And do not try to piss off the woman you will be delivering it to. She will eat you alive. Oh right, you are already dead. My bad." The last part actually slipped past my lips. I bite my tongue and steal a glance at Crystal.
If she is offended, she doesn’t let it show on her icy face. She looks rather serious as if she didn’t hear what I said mistakingly.
"Who do I have to deliver it?" Her voice is stern.
"Viviana Von Sylvyran, the crown princess of the Kingdom of Solaryn," I answer simply.
This time, Crystal actually shows an emotion. A look of surprise flashes across her paler-than-snow face just for a brief second. I am perplexed for a moment before I regain my composure.
"The crown princess?" She asks.
"Yes." I offer her a sweet smile.
She pauses for a second before picking up the envelope from the table and tucking it away in her clothes. She bows and disappears.
I winch. Seems like it will take a little while before I actually get used to my out-of-the-ordinary familiar. The temperature increases to normal. I let out a breath as I rub the back of my neck.
Too
much to do...
There is suddenly a firm knock on the door and my heart startles up to my throat.
"Cherry."
