Chapter 37: The Ghost Familiar
LIAM
I have never experienced loneliness or coldness in my bed before. But it seems like there is always a first for everything. Even feeling cold in your bed.
I slowly stir awake because of the lack of warmth engulfing me the whole night. My arm instinctively shoots out and searches for the source of the warmth but there is none. I open my eyes, squinting against the morning light streaming into the room through the tinted window.
Kian is gone.
I am never fond of realizations or reality checks because they always pull me out of my fantasies and comfort zone. I almost wish that Kian wasn’t the one who killed my brother at this point. Almost. I don’t know why but I do. But the reality is cruel and I have to accept it. It only fuels the flames of my hostility and anger.
I sigh and dive inside the sheets, curling into a ball, trying to get even a fraction of what I did last night. But the attempt is futile. I am even feeling colder now and that is pissing me off.
Wait. Colder.
I pop my head out of the covers and look around to find Crystal standing beside the bed.
"Master."
She speaks inside my head.
There are people patrolling the hallways and guarding the room, so if we speak, they might hear us, though I think the walls are thick enough to be classified as soundproof. But we don’t take risks.
"You are early."
I sit up, yawn, and rub my eyes.
"I came around earlier."
She hands me a letter,
"You planned to sneak out of here while the commander is busy in the meeting."
I take the letter from her hand and start to open it,
"The plan remains unchanged, I will get ready soon. Wait."
I open the letter and start to read.
Liam,
You piece of shit! How dare you?! Tell me where you are, you little shit! I will come and get you! And who are you sending to deliver your letters? A freaking ghost?! You took a freaking ghost as your familiar?! Have you gone crazy?!
I grin at the part of the letter. I can picture Vivana fussing with anger as she wrote the letter. I can picture the maids of the palace running around restlessly to put out the fire that was caused by Vivana’s volcano-like anger. Triumph and ecstasy seep into my veins and a wave of pleasure shoots through me.
Well, in any case, where did you get the name, ’Christopher’? It is your older brother
Oliver’s cover name, which he used to cover himself in Oblivara. He used to write it under the name as well. But why do you need the name?
Let me know as soon as possible. And don’t you dare

I crumple the pepper without the last bit of the letter and toss it inside my mouth, gulping it down and discarding the letter so that nobody else finds it. It tastes like shit, but I don’t need to read my sister’s rambling about what I am supposed to do and what I am supposed not to do.
Other than that I have found the information I needed. My jaw ticks and my fist clenches at the information. It’s a little shock even after I know who this person might be. But I don’t show any of it and keep my face neutral.
"You ate the letter,"
Crystal says more like a realization than a question.
"Can’t risk, Kian to find out."
I roll off the bed, stretching.
"Does he know that you are the third prince of Solaryn?"
Crystal follows me around as I get dressed, her expression neutral as if she doesn’t mind changing in front of her. Well, she actually doesn’t. She is now dead and a ghost, she doesn’t act like a normal human anymore.
"How do
you
know that I am the third prince?"
I slide into a pair of black pants.
"After getting your letter, the queen became very emotional, and the Crown Princess went blind with anger,"
Crystal
says,
"I may be dead and a ghost now, but Your Highness, I am not brainless. I once used to be the commander of the army at the borderline."
Despite her words, she is calm and as blank as a sheet as ever.
I chuckle, as I look at myself in the mirror. With the way I am dressing, I can easily pass for a professional spy. I don’t mind. I am doing a job of spy anyway.
"This is quite wise of you then Crystal."
I nod at her, not actually impressed,
"So, now tell me how can I get out of here without someone noticing me?"
"Someone not noticing you will be a miracle because, master, you are a human, not a ghost."
I
can’t bear to look at her blank face anymore so I look away.
"This is why I asked for a solution. I didn’t ask you to tell me something I was already well aware of."
I press my lips into two thin lines and give her an unimpressed look.
"However, if you want me to, I can make them unconscious for a while so that you can take the chance to sneak out, and I can take you to the Norlen estate."
She concedes
, "I can take you there faster than any vehicle can, master."
"And how will you do this?"
I raise a questioning eyebrow,
"I mean how will you knock out the guards?"
"Master, I can manipulate someone’s blood as long as they have blood in their veins."
She answers blankly.
"I will make their blood coil in their head for a little while. They will pass out from lack of oxygen."
I ’O’, this time a little impressed,
"You never told me that you could manipulate blood."
Well, she didn’t have to. I knew from the pattern she followed to kill her victims.
"Master, you knew."
I grin,
"I did."
***
Crystal’s plan seemed full-proof when she recited it. But it doesn’t feel full-proof anymore as we speed through the sky. The wind whips against my skin mercilessly as I scream.
"Put me down!" I scream at Crystal who is currently inside my body, possessing it. My heart is rattling everything inside me with how fast it is beating. My stomach is lurching and I know I am going to be sick. I can’t breathe because of how heavy the wind is. All I can hear is my heart’s skyrocketing beating and the rush of wind.
"I must obey master’s orders." The words fall out of my mouth, my voice but it sounds like Crystal.
After we got out of the fortress—with a miracle that nobody saw me—I ordered Crystal to take me to the Norlen estate, which was located on the outskirts of Oblivarae. Crystal wanted to possess my body for that. I was skeptical about it and asked her why. She said she would fly me there. I thought, ’What can go wrong, right?’ and now everything is going wrong.
"I am never taking this path ever again!" I below.
"You have to master." She replies simply, "When we return."
"Aaahhhh!"
