Chapter 431: Chapter 254: Andrew Hughes’s Single Father
Below the teaching building, beside the car.
Marcus Shaw opened the driver’s side door, but Nora Scott didn’t get in. Instead, she leaned against the car, observing two adults, one kid, and a white cat.
"Alright," Nora raised an eyebrow, "how did you manage to bring Rose out here?"
Under Nora’s rather intimidating gaze, little Andrew Hughes, bold for his age, still couldn’t quite handle it and shifted slightly towards Marcus Shaw.
Marcus Shaw glanced down at him and pulled him back a bit.
Oliver knew nothing of this matter, so he directed his puzzled gaze towards Marcus Shaw.
However, Marcus Shaw did not look at him, but at Nora, explaining, "Just a habit, brought her along incidentally."
Oliver pursed his lips and opened his mouth, wanting to reveal the truth, but was silenced by a warning look from Marcus Shaw.
Oliver immediately fell silent.
They left the house together.
If Marcus Shaw intended to bring Rose, he would have prepared in advance — cat food, toys, a carrier. But today, Marcus Shaw had brought nothing, clearly not planning to take Rose out because Nora was at home.
Besides, whenever Marcus Shaw brought Rose along, he’d stop by the fruit store to place her there before entering the school.
Today, Marcus Shaw didn’t go to the fruit store but came directly to school with him.
So this means...
Oliver’s gaze shifted to the obviously guilty-looking Andrew Hughes.
It was the kid.
He vaguely remembered that Andrew Hughes had a puffy backpack today.
"Oh."
Judging from their reactions, Nora slightly guessed some of it and didn’t scold them. After acknowledging with a sound, she bent down and got into the car.
Andrew Hughes looked up, his black and white eyes showing a hint of worry.
Afraid that Nora would reprimand Marcus Shaw afterward.
"It’s okay."
Marcus Shaw spoke softly, easing his worries.
In three to four months of living with Nora, he still hadn’t been scolded by her. — He figured that Nora was at best good at sarcasm and witty remarks but not capable of educating.
Oliver observed their small actions and confirmed his original guess but didn’t intend to expose or reveal it. Instead, he rubbed his nose and silently got into the car.
Soon, Marcus Shaw and Andrew Hughes also got in the car.
Andrew Hughes and Rose sat in the middle, with Marcus Shaw and Oliver on either side.
As the car started, Nora asked about restaurants near the school, and Oliver quickly engaged in conversation with her.
Andrew Hughes held onto Rose and after a moment, took out his phone to play.
Shortly after, Marcus Shaw’s phone vibrated. He took it out to look.
[Andrew Hughes]: You said Nora can’t even take care of herself. I’m a bit worried.
This was Andrew Hughes’ reason for secretly taking Rose.
[Marcus Shaw]: Mm.
Marcus Shaw replied with one character.
After seeing the reply, Andrew Hughes tilted his head, blinking at Marcus Shaw, then looked at Rose, his brows furrowed tightly.
He really liked Rose.
Normally, he played alone. Now, with Rose after school, he didn’t have time for leisure activities, evidently living much more comfortably and freely.
Recording Rose’s feeding and playtime; searching online for scientific cat care methods and notes, he wrote them down in a notebook to ensure no mistakes.
Compared to someone who just fed Rose cat food, played with her in leisure time, and even left litter duties to others, Andrew Hughes was indeed more suitable for taking care of Rose.
After deciding on a restaurant, Nora drove out of the campus gates and then asked Marcus Shaw, "Did you notify his family?"
"I sent a message to his granddad." Marcus Shaw explained, "No reply."
Nora paused, puzzled, "No call?"
"Didn’t answer."
"When will he be back?"
"I don’t know."
Marcus Shaw answered truthfully.
The nature of a detective’s work is like this. Lately encountering several cases in quick succession, running back-to-back with no time even to eat or sleep, let alone care for a child at home.
Andrew Hughes being mature and sensible has a lot to do with his grandfather and mother’s long-term absence.
"If you don’t know, ask." Nora’s tone suddenly carried a trace of anger, "If they don’t answer, keep calling."
Marcus Shaw paused slightly, unsure where her irritation and anger came from.
This matter had nothing...
to do with her.
However, what Nora said, it was best to follow.
Marcus Shaw had no prior experience clashing with her, but... he had seen the outcomes of those who did.
Thus, throughout the journey, Marcus Shaw continuously called Sir Hughes. It wasn’t until they reached the restaurant that Sir Hughes finally answered the phone.
With a few words, Marcus Shaw explained today’s situation and asked Sir Hughes when he would return. After getting an accurate answer from Sir Hughes, Marcus Shaw didn’t hang up but promptly relayed it to Nora.
