Chapter 459: Chapter 270: Sophie Scott’s Chance Encounter, Egbert Vaughn Makes His Entrance [Part 2]
"Do you know why I hate you?"
Every word was filled with hostility.
Her gaze was sharp and piercing, full of confrontation and coldness, making Oliver shiver all over.
Oliver was stunned for a moment, "Sis..."
"I hate that you can do everything well, that Alma’s heart always leans toward you; I hate that you’re always so optimistic, like you can solve anything, that the pain isn’t yours, you can’t empathize; I hate that you know how to be sweet and talk, that everyone likes you, forgives you..."
Sophie was in tears, yet her voice remained calm as she listed her accusations against Oliver.
"What’s so special about you? Alma gave birth to us using her tricks, both of us."
"We’re both the same, neither of us should have been born from the start."
"Do you think saying some nice words can make everything go away? It’s useless! It will never pass!"
...
"Sis, calm down—"
Seeing her on the brink of a breakdown, Oliver felt a pang of empathy and reached out his hand.
"Snap."
A crisp sound of collision.
Sophie hit his hand away with the back of her hand.
She raised her head, her eyes bloodshot, glaring at him, "Don’t touch me!"
Oliver froze, looking at her in a daze.
"Bang."
The bedroom door was slammed shut.
The bang made Oliver’s eyelids twitch, and looking again, the door was closed tight, Sophie already isolated behind it.
Oliver stood quietly for a long while, then hung his head, ruffled his hair with his hand, and slowly walked away.
*
In the evening, seven-thirty.
Sophie went downstairs.
She had changed her clothes and let her hair down, her eyes still slightly swollen.
"Miss, where are you going this late?"
Lisa came over, having been worried all the time.
"School."
Without looking at Lisa, Sophie said expressionlessly.
"Then at least have dinner before you go—"
Before Lisa could finish, Sophie was already out the door.
Lisa watched her leave with urgency in her eyes, and could only curse Nora Scott a few times in her heart.
...
Half an hour later.
Sophie sat in a taxi, staring blankly out the window, watching the neon lights of Long Street recede, passing by scene after scene.
Suddenly, a string of license plates appeared in her view, pulling her gaze away.
Ethan Scott?
"Driver, stop the car."
All of a sudden, not knowing why, Sophie spoke up, calling to stop the taxi.
The driver pulled over to the roadside, muttering curiously, "Weren’t you going to Capital Uni?"
Sophie heard him but said nothing, quickly settled the fare and got out of the car.
She was dressed lightly, wearing a long dress with a sheer knitted cardigan over it, and as the night wind blew, the moment she got out, she shivered, her skin raising fine goosebumps.
She took a deep breath.
The air in the city was not fresh, on such a street it was stuffy and suffocating, the wind brushing against her hair and cheeks did not make her feel refreshed, instead felt sticky.
She paused and glanced at the distant taxi, then stepped onto the sidewalk, heading towards the spot where she had just glimpsed the vehicle.
Since Aaron Scott’s birthday banquet, Sophie had not seen Ethan Scott.
Firstly, relations between the two families were now awkward, so contact had to be minimized; secondly, both of them were busy with their own affairs, neither had any free time.
The place where the vehicle was parked was a nightclub.
This sort of place was totally unlike the image she had in her mind of the disciplined, gentle, and modest Ethan Scott, so when she stood at the nightclub entrance, she suddenly froze.
Should she call and ask?
She was absent-minded when leaving home, bringing only her phone, and now the phone was nearly out of charge.
She lowered her head, the phone screen lit up, and she unlocked it and entered the contact list, hesitating a bit.
Brought up strictly, Alma had taught her from a young age to avoid bars and nightclubs, so at such a place like this for the first time, she felt a bit apprehensive.
Even if Ethan Scott was inside, she still was reluctant...
As she was thinking, a silhouette outside suddenly caught her attention.
It was a man, dressed in black, standing in a dimly lit corner, an indistinct outline barely visible. He was talking on the phone while smoking, smoke swirling around slowly dispersing, the cigarette between his fingers glowing a soft orange, flickering.
Unknown to her was his age or appearance.
Yet inexplicably, he had a captivating aura.
Sophie stood in a daze, her gaze inexplicably fixed on him, her mind wandering, lost in thought, just staring like that.
Only when he hung up the phone, stubbed the cigarette out, and headed toward the entrance did Sophie snap back to reality, hurriedly retracting her gaze.
