Chapter 19: The Marked One.
Zeph’s enhanced hearing should have been overwhelmed by the chaos—hundreds of screaming goblins, cracking trees, the grinding roar of tortured earth. But what struck him most was what the goblins weren’t reacting to.
They fled in panic from the earthquake and their ancestor’s destruction, but not one of them looked up at the tear in reality hanging above the clearing like a wound in the fabric of existence.
’They can’t see it,’ he realized with chilling clarity. ’Whatever this is, it’s only visible to me.’
The observation did nothing to comfort him as something began to emerge from the spatial tear.
It came slowly at first—a chitinous leg pushing through the dimensional wound, followed by another, then another. The creature’s body defied conventional geometry, seeming both impossibly large and terrifyingly close despite the distance that should have existed.
A centipede.
But not the small scavengers that infested the ruins’ lower levels. This thing was massive, its segmented body covered in purple flames that burned without consuming, casting light that somehow created deeper shadows rather than illuminating anything.
Each segment pulsed with its own internal rhythm, creating a hypnotic pattern that made Zeph’s eyes hurt to track. The creature’s mandibles clicked together with sounds that bypassed his ears entirely and resonated directly in his soul.
And it was looking at him!
Not with eyes—the thing didn’t have anything as mundane as eyes—but with the focused attention of a predator that had found exactly what it was hunting.
’Move!’ Zeph’s survival instincts screamed. ’Run, dodge, do literally anything except stand here waiting to die!’
But the chains binding his wrists to the ritual pit’s floor held firm, and his enhanced strength wasn’t enough to simply tear through forged iron.
He was trapped, helpless, able only to watch as cosmic horror descended toward him with terrible inevitability.
The centipede launched itself from the spatial tear with speed that turned its massive form into a purple streak. No buildup, no warning—one moment it was emerging from the dimensional wound, the next it was a beam of burning light aimed directly at his forehead.
Zeph didn’t even have time to flinch before impact.
Shuuuu!
The creature struck him between the eyes and vanished, not splattering or crushing but simply ceasing to exist in external space. The purple flames poured into his skull like water finding a drain, and for one terrifying moment, Zeph felt the centipede’s presence inside his mind—alien, vast, and impossibly ancient.
Then the sensation faded, leaving only warmth where the impact point had been.
[ALERT: SOUL MARK RECEIVED]
[CLASSIFICATION: PRIMORDIAL BRAND - DEVOURER’S SEAL]
[INTEGRATION COMMENCING]
Purple light bloomed from Zeph’s forehead like a third eye opening, casting the pit in otherworldly radiance. The light spread across his skin in flowing patterns that resembled both circuit boards and ancient calligraphy, converging into a complex tattoo that settled above his eyebrows.
The mark pulsed once, twice, and reality began rewriting Zeph’s physical form.
Pain would have been a mercy. What he experienced was closer to having his entire body dissolved and reconstructed on a cellular level while remaining conscious throughout the process.
His bones lengthened with sounds like cracking timber, forcing him to his knees as his frame stretched upward.
Seven feet became eight, then kept going, his proportions adjusting to accommodate the impossible growth. Muscle mass increased proportionally, maintaining his lean build while adding density that made his previous physique look malnourished by comparison.
His hair erupted from his scalp in a cascade of purple that matched the flames from the centipede, growing with supernatural speed until it pooled on the pit floor around him like liquid shadow.
The color wasn’t natural—it seemed to shift between shades that didn’t quite exist in normal spectrum, sometimes dark as midnight, sometimes bright as amethyst.
His nails extended into proper claws, each one sharpening to points that could punch through steel. His canines lengthened slightly, just enough to be noticeable when he opened his mouth.
But the most dramatic change was his face. Where before he’d been striking in a gaunt, predatory way, now his features carried an edge of genuine menace. Sharper cheekbones, more defined jaw, eyes that seemed to contain purple light in their depths even when the glow faded.
His clothes, unable to accommodate the rapid transformation, tore apart and fell away in shreds. The chains binding his wrists snapped like rusted wire under the force of his expanding frame.
Through it all, Zeph barely registered the physical changes. His eyes were locked on the system interface that had materialized in his vision, displaying information that shouldn’t be possible.
"What in the world..." he whispered, his voice deeper and carrying harmonics that made the air itself vibrate.

Every stat capped at 999. Resources in the tens of thousands. His body transformed into something that barely qualified as human anymore.
’This is impossible,’ his mind supplied uselessly. ’The System doesn’t allow stats this high at level 2. This breaks every fundamental rule of progression mechanics.’
But the evidence was literally written in his interface, undeniable and terrifying in its implications.
Before he could process the full scope of what had just happened to him, another notification blazed across his vision—this one edged in gold and carrying the unmistakable weight of System authority.
[SYSTEM EVENT: EMERGENCY PRIORITY]
[THREAT CLASSIFICATION: MALICIOUS ANOMALY DETECTED]
[THREAT LEVEL: REGIONAL EXTINCTION EVENT]
A map materialized alongside the notification, showing the Seattle ruins from an aerial perspective. Various markers indicated awakened signatures throughout the region, scattered dots of blue light representing humans responding to the dungeon break.
And in the center of the goblin clearing, pulsing with ominous red light, was a single marker that made Zeph’s enhanced mind connect the dots with horrifying speed.
The marker was labeled: [MALICIOUS ANOMALY - PRIORITY ELIMINATION TARGET]
The geographical coordinates matched his exact position.
[EVENT REWARDS:]
- Base Elimination Bonus: 5,000 EXP + 100,000 SP
- Performance Bonuses: Legendary-tier equipment and skills
- Regional Hero Title
[WARNING: ANOMALY POSSESSES DEADLY CAPABILITIES]
[ESTIMATED THREAT: SUITABLE FOR A-RANK AWAKENED]
[ALL AVAILABLE FORCES AUTHORIZED TO ENGAGE]
Zeph stared at the notification, then at his transformed body, then back at the map showing his location marked as the target that needed to be eliminated.
"Oh," he said quietly, his new voice carrying enough harmonic resonance to make nearby trees shiver. "Oh, that’s not good."
He was the malicious anomaly. The thing the System wanted dead. The extinction-level threat that would bring every awakened in the region down on his head with authorization to use lethal force.
And he was standing naked in a pit surrounded by his shredded clothes, with purple hair, claws, and stats that screamed "kill me before I destroy everything."
’Well,’ he thought distantly, ’this has been a really eventful first day.’
