Chapter 255: More to ask for
Chapter 255
Felix
"The court is full of complications, I do my best to study but it is not so simple." I say, looking at the books and documents spread before me.
The parchment seems endless, filled with edicts, s, and notes that speak of alliances, debts, disputes, and expectations I am still trying to understand.
Every word seems to weigh heavier than the last, each line a reminder of the immense responsibility I carry.
A melodic giggle drifts across the room, soft and deliberate.
"Unfortunately, your highness, humans deviate from the norm," Edith says, her hands now settling on my shoulders, kneading tension away with practiced ease.
"Sure, everyone says they want what’s best for the kingdom being nobles, according to the nobility conducts and laws, but nobles are human, and humans are oftentimes greedy and selfish."
"I suppose that is common sense, but all grandfather said was to study at the academy and I’ll be ready."
She chuckles softly, leaning close enough for her breath to brush my ear.
"Well, he’s
not
wrong. This knowledge is useful, and besides, he didn’t say you should just learn from the formal lessons and class."
I groan, the sound low and tired.
"Worry not, your highness, you’re certainly better than you were a couple of months ago," she assures me, her fingers still kneading at the knots of tension in my shoulders.
I can’t help but smile, the warmth of her presence easing the weight of the day.
"What would I do without you?"
"This is information that I’ve garnered, from years of being in society and sneaking into my father and brother’s meetings, you know." Her tone is almost teasing, but each word carries authority, each experience a lesson she now passes to me.
I glance up from the papers, trying to calculate a fair reward. "What payment do you wish for?"
"Surprise me, your highness," she replies simply.
I stand up, moving closer, wrapping my arm around her legs and lifting her and walking toward the bed. Her eyes glint with mischief, a soft smirk playing at her lips as she follows willingly.
Miss Edith is a very vocal and active participant for a lover. Each time I stumble or fumble, her scolding sharpens my focus.
Over time, I have learned the contours and secrets of her body, the subtle rhythms and responses, and I decide to use my new found skills on the other ladies...the reception has been great except Lani, of course.
For the younger fox twin, it is different. No matter my skill, no matter the time I spend, no matter the method, she just doesn’t budge.
Maybe it’s just how she is.

Even now, I can still feel the lingering buzz from last night’s encounter with his highness. The memory makes my skin tingle, warmth pooling in my chest and lower, a gentle ache that reminds me of everything.
"Seems like you no longer hate her?" My twin’s voice, calm and observant, breaks through my reverie. She sits at the table, scribbling notes absentmindedly.
"I misunderstood her," I admit, turning slightly in bed, my chest sensitive to even the lightest touch. I face the ceiling, to avoid disturbing my sore and tender chest.
"What happened to not knowing her place?" she asks again, voice soft but pointed.
"Like I said, I misunderstood her. She does not wish to hog his highness like I initially thought. In fact, I can only conclude it’s only thanks to her that his highness is better, in... bedroom activities. Surely
you
can attest to that," I say, a trace of exasperation and admiration mingling in my voice.
"Uh... yeah," she responds, a tone that is odd, almost hesitant, though I brush it aside. She’s probably tired or preoccupied.
Rolling slightly to my side, letting my thoughts wander, recalling the conversation with Lady Veyron. She had called me aside, informing me that my initial behavior in the bedchamber was displeasing to his highness.
Embarrassment had burned across my face, yet I followed her counsel, unlearning the rigid lessons of decorum I had been taught — that a lady should lie silent and still, passive as stone, when in intimate moments.
Yet now, having become an active participant, the change was undeniable. His gaze, his attentiveness, the frequency of his visits, and the little gifts that arrived afterward — all had transformed.
Had she really been the evil hag, I thought she was she wouldn’t have informed me of that and would have let my relationship with his highness fizzle. Thinking about what the governess taught us makes me angry.
"When I think about it," I say, pressing my forehead against the pillow, "it makes me angry. Everything the governess taught us was a lie!"
My twin chuckles, a soft, amused sound. "Indeed."
I glance at her, eyes narrowing slightly, curiosity creeping back into my thoughts.
"By the way, Lani, the other day, I came by with his highness to your room a little late at night, but you were not in. Where were you?"
Her pause is long enough to register, tail swishing anxiously.
"I was on a walk. I must have lost track of time," she says.
A lie.
The lie is subtle, but unmistakable. Lani has never been one to lie to me before, and yet... here it is. My stomach tightens with unease, a knot of suspicion and worry.
"I see," I murmur, letting the words hang.
My younger sister has been different lately, strange in ways I cannot easily put a finger on.
She seems to pull away, spending less time with me, investing her attention elsewhere. New friends, new confidences. And each time we walk the academy halls together, there are subtle acknowledgments — curtseys, nods, whispers — from students I do not recognize, yet she’s farmiliar with them.
It is not enough to bring it up but not insignificant enough that I can brush it aside.
It’s probably nothing.
I sigh, letting thoughts of my sister slip away, replaced by more immediate concerns — his highness. My pulse quickens at the memory of last night, the frustration he expressed, the controlled force with which he took his pleasure, the hours of glorious, burning torment that left me tender, aching, alive.
Unlike Lumiya, I have no desire for the throne. As his consort, I am granted prestige without the burden of power, influence without the weight of expectations and troublesome responsibilities that come with being Queen.
I just get to love and be loved, what more could I ask for?
