I felt like shit when I woke up the next morning.
There weren't any windows, so I couldn't check the sun's position, but judging by how long I felt I had slept, I was sure it was morning.
My eyes opened and stared at the ceiling, tracing the straight line that had been carved onto it.
In the first few seconds, my senses busied themselves with the light pouring into my eyes, then they went on to activate the rest of my body.
The next organ to be attended to was my ears, the silence of the room registering in my mind, then came taste and smell.
The smell of blood and sex hit me like a truck, my face scrunching at the abundant scent of iron.
I turned my head to the side, readying my body for movement, and that simple action triggered every nerve in my body. A painful groan escaped my mouth.
I felt like shit. Aches and pains rushed through me, spiking at several random intervals, my heart thumping like adrenaline was on the verge of being released.
The chaos inside my body forced me to sit up, my eyes first scanning myself and then the room around me.
"Figures."
Lucy wasn't in the room, not that I was surprised.
Considering I had been the one pounding and getting injured last night, her recovery speed was bound to be fast, she wouldn't have any trouble getting up today.
Throwing aside the sheets that had been draped over me, I got off the bed, a sigh leaving my lips as I looked over my battered form.
"What a mess... And you, you look like you fought a tiger."
Somehow, Chiara had appeared in the room, and she wasn't the least bit shy about staring at my naked form.
"I would like some privacy."
"You just had sex with a nun of the Vatican. Privacy should be the last of your problems," the woman said, and I raised a brow.
"You speak like you didn't know this was going to happen."
"Just because I know doesn't mean it's right."
"True. But you agree you're an accomplice, right?"
Chiara looked at me silently for a few seconds, then smiled brightly.
"I can't refuse that."
Dressed in a plain blue gown, her shoes flat and her hair bundled up in a bun, the madam had seated herself on the only clean spot in the room, the chair I had set aside yesterday.
Reaching into a pocket in her gown, she looked around the room in disgust. Pulling out her hand, she threw me a bottle.
"Sit and take this. It will help with your wounds. It'll speed up your healing a lot, though you'll have to eat plenty afterwards."
Grabbing the bottle out of the air, I looked at its small transparent figure, uncorked it, and smelled its contents.
"How do I know this is safe?"
"You don't. You can either accept my goodwill or let your body heal at its natural pace."
"I'll take it later," I said, corking the bottle and holding it in my fist.
Chiara's eyes followed my hand before she sighed in exasperation as she glanced around the room.
"Humans truly are animals."
"Ever had a taste?" I asked, watching as the woman stood to her feet.
"No."
"Preserving your purity for the right one?"
"Yes."
"Well, praise the Lord, you've met him," I said, raising my hand, my meat swaying.
"You have a nice dick, Marcus. But if you tried putting it in me, you'd die."
"Why?" I asked, my thirst for pussy pushed to the back as genuine curiosity took over.
"Do you believe in evolution, Marcus? Not just spiritual, but biological."
"Well, science says we humans evolved from apes. I don't have a strong counter to that."
"I like an open mind," the redhead said honestly. Then she continued, dropping a bomb that shook my thoughts.
"As you said, humans evolved from apes. So tell me, what evolved from humans?"
"Huh?"
"It's been over 200,000 years since modern humans began walking the earth. Don't you think, with how advanced our minds are, another evolution should have occurred by now?"
Thinking about how we had arrived at this topic, the truth Chiara was hinting at clicked in my head, and my forehead scrunched.
"You're not human," I said hesitantly.
"For now, I can still be called one, but my progress puts me far beyond your league."
I don't know when it happened, but a heavy breath left my chest, and Chiara chuckled.
"Inevitably, that time will come. And my offer to you, Marcus, is the chance to become one of the higher life forms."
"What happens to the lower ones?"
Chiara's lips tightened, and her eyes narrowed. She stared at me intensely, then burst out laughing.
"You should see your face. I can hear your heart drumming all the way from here."
I could only sigh as I placed a hand on my forehead, the tension in the air fading as my body relaxed.
"This isn't some world-dominating plan, Marcus, just the next phase of evolution for our race."
I was still rubbing my forehead when Chiara walked up to me, a sheet of paper appearing in her hand as if from nowhere.
"Drop your blood on this."
"What is that?"
"A contract, one you're going to sign. What I just told you is a world secret. Several people at the top aren't even aware of it."
I opened my mouth to speak, but Chiara beat me to it.
"If you don't sign it right now, this instant, before me, I'll kill you."
"System!!" I called inwardly.
I was wary of contracts. Very wary. Understanding that the world was made up of more than just the physical made me averse to dropping something as sacred as my blood.
Of course, at this critical time, the system went silent, deaf to my call and with one look into Chiara's eyes, I lifted my thumb, ready to drop blood.
