"You're changing the topic," I refused to be led by the noose.
"I didn't complain when you did the same."
"Lucy was always on the agenda."
Chiara flicked her tongue, backing away from the argument and showing her annoyance at the situation, then she exhaled.
"Would you prefer to hear the words from me or Lucy herself?
It's her story, and she should be the one to say it."
"I am very comfortable with you saying it, Chiara. Please, go on."
My reply had the woman raise her brow. I showed that I didn't lack wisdom.
"I need a drink for this."
Before I could protest, Chiara got up and walked to a small fridge by the side. She took out a yellow drink with two cups, and returning, placed it on the table, immediately uncorking the bottle.
"Marcus, do you know that vampires are real?"
"Huh?"
"The night creatures placed into movies and written into novels, they're real. They exist in the real world, and your baby Lucy is one of them."
Chiara went quiet, watching as I digested her words. Then she had a long drink from her cup.
"It shouldn't surprise you much. I mean, while we humans have come up with a lot of creatures, you should know there's no smoke without fire.
The tales of vampires are just too popular and strong for there to be nothing to them. Very few other myths are as persistent as theirs."
"What's their origin story? Are they native to Earth like us?"
Before Chiara answered my question, she raised a finger.
"Before I continue, I want us both to be clear about one thing."
"And what is that?"
"You've chosen your camp."
"I'm pretty sure I've drunk too much with you to leave the table, but it wouldn't hurt for you to pitch it to me."
"We're the oldest power in the world. Our knowledge and accumulation are unmatched. No one comes close to it, not even the shoalin temples."
"Hmm, well, I'm sold. Can we get back to the story?"
"Sure.
No, vampires aren't native to Earth. They came here sometime in the 1700s, fleeing their world, which had been conquered and destroyed.
When they arrived, they ran a little rampant, causing chaos and destruction. Thankfully, the first arrivals were quite few, so we were able to mobilize and subdue them.
Things were tense during that time, as there was a huge debate on whether to establish them as a global threat and eradicate them from the face of this planet.
Luckily for the vampires, they had very smart leaders. In exchange for the knowledge they'd accumulated for thousands of years, the vampires convinced us to spare their lives."
Chiara finished her story suddenly and unexpectedly, and I was left with a whirling brain.
"So, the vampires are walking amongst us now?"
"No, they live up high above us."
"The sky?"
"No, out of Earth."
"The moon?"
"Somewhere between that and Earth. It's a sub-world, a place made by combining the energies of the two moving bodies.
It's the result of some high-level spell casting and sealing. I can't even comprehend the calculations involved."
My mouth hung open as I digested Chiara's words. I looked at the woman, trying to see if she was joking, but she was only concerned about filling her cup.
"How many people know about this?"
"Few. Fewer than even those who know about the other thing I told you about.
Only families and organizations that have existed since that time are aware. Some generations don't even have the information in their heads, it's just stored in some secret vault."
"This is a huge, major secret. But why are you telling me something like this?"
"You're very right to wonder that. And to answer your question, we have to go to another, more interesting one."
"If the vampires are in some sub-world, why then is Lucy here?
Can you guess?"
"No."
"You're being boring, Marcus.
Hey, eat the food, it's going cold."
Chiara looked at the plate before me intently, and I had to dig in a few times before she continued.
"I'm not sure how we humans are going to go about our own evolution, but vampires evolved in a very interesting way.
Their evolution landed them in a state where they are separated by blood ranks, dividing them into castes.
There are the holy vampires, the dark vampires, the noble vampires, and then the royal vampires.
Each caste is unique and profound, but the one that concerns us at the moment is the royal vampires.
Royal vampires have a lot of perks, but what stands out about them is that, as the name suggests, they are royalty.
They are born to lead, born to command. Every other caste bows to their blood.
Lucy is the first child of the current royal family, and that's why she is here.
She's sort of a hostage.
The vampires caused us a lot of damage, and to convince us to let them live, they made a lot of concessions, some very brutal, I must say."
"You still haven't mentioned my importance in all of this," I asked when Chiara emptied her glass and her gaze wandered.
"You're aware of the darkness of our race, aren't you, Marcus? Especially in the past."
"Yes."
"How many hybrids do you think exist at the moment? I mean human and vampire."
"Ehh, a few."
"Wrong. None.
Just like humans and animals can't breed, neither can vampires and humans. All sorts of methods have been tried, even artificial insemination, all of them failing.
You, however, present a promise."
"What promise?" I asked with a bit of unease.
"Every man who has slept with vampires has died. Worst of all are those with royal blood, they die the most horrific deaths.
Bodies dissolving from the inside out, their heads aching until they burst. You, though, are different.
You took the virginity of one from pure royal blood and fucked her like the whore next door.
You, my boy, are a gem."
"Why do the others die?"
"It's like I explained to you earlier, if I evolved and you fucked me, you'd die. Higher beings can't breed with lower beings."
"So... any idea why I'm different?"
"Nope."
