Chapter 118: Chapter 61: Fighting in the Arena_2
Lian Manman couldn’t help but laugh to herself, it had already been made clear that the dumplings were for Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou, and now, with neither Old Master Lian nor Lady Zhou having said a word, where did Lady He get the idea it was her place to speak? Therefore, she didn’t join in the conversation and just watched Old Master Lian with a cheerful smile.
"Who else do you intend to feed?" Old Master Lian cast a glance at Lady He and reprimanded, then turned to Lian Manman with a kind expressions, "You’ve just started your own household, and times are tight for you, it’s not easy to wrap up some dumplings, and now you’re giving them away? I won’t eat them, take them back, and share with Xiao Qi."
"Old Master, why wouldn’t our life be easy? As long as you and grandmother don’t mind, whatever we have to eat, we have to offer to you and grandmother." Lian Manman said with a smile, "Old Master, please try them and see if they taste good."
The Fourth Household had wrapped dumplings with oil barrels, and it was Lian Shouxin who had first come to invite him and Lady Zhou, now with Lian Manman saying such filial and thoughtful words, Old Master Lian felt very pleased in his heart. He thus stopped refusing, picked up a dumpling, put it in his mouth, and after eating, he kept saying how delicious it was.
"Mother said that Old Master and grandmother are getting on in years and specifically made the dough softer. When I go back, I’ll tell my mother that Old Master praised the dumplings for being delicious." Lian Manman then left the Upper Room with a smile.
Upon returning to the West Wing Room, Lian Manman relayed Old Master Lian’s words to Lady Zhang and Lian Shouxin.
"Your grandfather is a person who understands propriety," Lady Zhang said. "Hurry up and eat your dumplings on the kang, we’re all waiting for you."
It turned out that the whole family hadn’t started eating yet, just waiting for Lian Manman to come back and eat the dumplings together. Her own family really was the best, and the little unhappiness in Lian Manman’s heart caused by Lady He disappeared in an instant.
After they had finished eating, Lian Manman and Lian Zhizhi were tidying up the table when Xiao Qi rushed back from the doorway.
"Second Aunt is coming with Sixth Brother, looks like they’re heading our way."
Lian Manman’s heart stirred. While she sent Xiao Qi to find a way to stall Lady He, she and Lian Zhizhi hurried to tidy up, not worrying about the bowls and chopsticks, but the remaining dumplings had to be put away first.
Xiao Qi’s stalling of Lady He only bought a little time, but fortunately, the sisters were quick, and by the time Lady He entered with Liulang, there were only some empty bowls left on the dining table.
Lady He’s eyes widened as she glanced around but failed to find anything, then she took Liulang and sat down on the edge of the kang.
"Fourth Auntie, the dumplings you made today are really tasty," Lady He began.
Lian Manman thought that it seemed the dumplings she had sent over meant that Old Master Lian was unwilling to eat alone and had shared them with everyone.
"It was just the leftover oil scraps we had; what’s there to taste good?" Lady Zhang replied honestly.
"How can it not taste good? We haven’t had dumplings for half a year in our house. It’s just that there were too few, one per person wasn’t even enough, we didn’t even savor them before they were gone. Fourth Auntie, I saw Manman pick two melons, so you must have made quite a lot of dumplings, and you can’t finish them all, just give us a bowl, as a treat for your nephew here, look how he’s drooling." Lady He then pushed Liulang forward.
Lady Zhang didn’t like hearing Lady He’s words, but looking at Liulang made her soft-hearted.
"Manman, see if there are any dumplings left, and if there are, give some to Liulang," Lady Zhang said to Lian Manman.
Lady Zhang had a gentle temperament and cared about saving face; facing someone as shameless as Lady He, she could only suffer a loss. But fortunately, Lady Zhang still knew to ask for Lian Manman’s opinion.
Lian Manman was angry inside. Giving a few dumplings to Liulang didn’t matter, but she couldn’t indulge Lady He’s behavior, or else there would be no peace in the future.
"Mother, how can there be any dumplings left? It was just that little amount, and to save up to show filial piety to grandfather and grandmother, Xiao Qi and I haven’t even had enough to eat," Lian Manman complained to Lady Zhang.
Lady Zhang of course knew there were still dumplings, but since Lian Manman had said so, she couldn’t possibly contradict her own child in front of outsiders.
"Second Auntie, about this..." Lady Zhang looked at Lady He apologetically.
With Lady Zhang acting this way, Lady He felt like she had caught onto something.
"Fourth Auntie, you didn’t use to be like this, how could you become so heartless after splitting the household? While you feast and revel, you have the heart to let us watch..." Lady He rattled on and on.
"Second Auntie, what are you saying? How can you say my mother is heartless?" Lian Manman immediately frowned, "Second Auntie, you are the truly heartless one. Liulang is your own son, if you really cared for your son, the money spent on a few ounces of rice powder to put on your face would be enough to buy half a pig’s worth of meat for Liulang to eat his fill."
Everyone’s gaze then fell on Lady He’s face, which was covered in white powder.
"Oh my, you child, now you’re even meddling in whether I powder my face or not."
