Chapter 120: Chapter 62: To Please_1
Lian Manman and Lian Zhizhi went home to cook and saw the carriage parked at the entrance was indeed the same one they had seen before, with large Song characters embroidered on the curtain.
"It’s the Song Family’s carriage!" Lian Zhizhi gently tugged at Lian Manman’s hand.
"Which Song Family?" Lian Manman casually asked.
"Which else, it’s Sister Huahua’s in-laws." Lian Zhizhi pointed to one of the carriages, "This carriage has been here before when making arrangements, I remember."
As the sisters entered the main gate, they immediately saw Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu escorting someone out. That person walked with his head held high and a confident stride. He appeared to be in his forties, with a mustache over his upper lip shaped like the Chinese character "八" and a lean physique. He wore a top hat with ridges and was dressed in a Luchou robe, with green damask shoes on his feet.
"Chief Butler, our place is modest, and it’s made you laugh. Please, stay for a meal before you go," Lian Shouren said with a smiling face, slight bow in his waist.
"Scholar Master is too courteous, but this time I really am pressed for time, and as you know, our Young Master isn’t accustomed to dealing with leases, so I have to handle most matters," the Chief Butler responded.
"Steward Fu is my brother-in-law’s right-hand man, indispensable at any moment," Lian Jizu said with a compensatory smile.
Lian Manman was walking head-on into these three people. Seeing the respectful manner of father and son Lian Shouren, and knowing they were addressing a butler, she guessed this man must be the Song Family’s butler, and she stepped aside with Lian Zhizhi.
When Song Fu saw Lian Manman and Lian Zhizhi, he stopped in his tracks and looked over the two sisters, reaching up to stroke his mustache.
"These are two girls from the Fourth Household," Lian Shouren said. "They are country girls, haven’t seen much of the world. Zhizhi, Manman, why don’t you hurry and pay your respects to Steward Fu."
Lian Manman was upset. Lian Xiuxiu was to marry the Young Master of the Song Family, and Song Fu was the Family’s butler. It was one thing for Lian Shouren to bow and scrape—that was his business—but when he opened his mouth, it was at the cost of their dignity.
If you embarrass me, don’t blame me for not giving you face in return.
"Is the Aunt and Sister Huahua back?" Lian Manman feigned an innocent and confused expression. "The Aunt lost a tooth and said she’d simply get a replacement and be straight back, but then she was gone for so many days. At home, we’re busy with the autumn harvest and can barely keep up, plus Mother has to cook and feed the pigs. We’ve sent word several times asking her to come back to help, but there’s been no response. Once Sister Huahua is married off, the Aunt won’t need to do these chores anymore. Uncle, are you the one bringing Sister Huahua back? Thank you so much; if Sister Huahua didn’t come back soon, she’d have to get married from another’s home, and then things would really be difficult to explain."
The future Madam of the household seemed to have quite the story—perhaps it was something to inquire about in detail. The Lady would definitely love to hear it. Song Fu’s mustache twitched, and his small eyes narrowed.
Lian Manman’s unbridled speech changed the complexions of Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu to quite an unsightly look.
Lian Manman took in the expressions of the three men, feeling secretly pleased. She was just a country girl, and at only ten years old, she hadn’t grown her hair long yet. Whatever she said, others couldn’t well hold it against her. If they said she was ignorant to the ways of the world, she would happily play ignorant, giving them a taste of their own medicine, leaving them bitter but unable to voice their grievance.
Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu kept busy making excuses to Song Fu, while Lian Manman turned and pulled Lian Zhizhi inside.
Xiao Qi came out from the West Wing Room upon hearing the commotion.
"Sister, the Aunt is in our room," Xiao Qi whispered to Lian Manman.
"Oh?"
"She brought quite a few things over for Mother," Xiao Qi added.
Lady Gu sending gifts to Lady Zhang? Lian Manman found this odd and quickly went inside.
"Zhizhi and Manman are back. No need to cook lunch; I’ve brought some food back from the county. Let’s all have the midday meal in the Upper Room," Lady Gu said with a smile upon seeing Lian Manman and Lian Zhizhi enter.
As the saying goes, you don’t slap a smiling face. Seeing Lady Gu like this, Lian Manman could only reciprocate with a smile.
"Welcome back, Aunt. How have you been recently?"
"Good, good, look how well-mannered this child is," Lady Gu complimented her before turning back to Lady Zhang, continuing their earlier conversation.
"... Who would’ve thought, leaving only these few days, such a big change would happen at home. Ah, I felt so heartbroken for you," Lady Gu said, deliberately glancing outside the window before continuing, "Not that I’m one to speak as your sister-in-law, but Xiuxiu is becoming far too unruly, completely unreasonable in her speech and actions. It’s made things so hard on you, my fourth sister-in-law..."
"The past is in the past, there’s no use speaking of it now," Lady Zhang interjected, her eyes reddening at the mention of her lost child.
"Oh my, there I go again, bringing it up. No more of that," Lady Gu quickly switched to a smiling demeanor again. "But why did you have to separate the households? I just told our Eldest Brother that no matter what the Second Household thinks, as the eldest, he should’ve stepped in and stopped you all from separating."
