Chapter 130: Chapter 67 Si Lang s a Secret_1
At the second watch, ask for pink.
************......*************
"What?" Lian Zhizhi, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi all changed their facial expressions, "Si Lang, are you telling the truth?"
"Of course, it’s true." Si Lang replied somewhat smugly.
Lian Manman was also greatly shaken inside, but she did not show it on the surface, because only by doing so could she entice Si Lang to talk more.
"Si Lang, this matter is no small thing; it’s not something you can carelessly fabricate. Do you understand?" Lian Manman sternly said to Si Lang.
"I am not making it up." Si Lang immediately replied, perhaps realizing that whether he would get a chicken leg hinged on Lian Manman, he took her words seriously.
"Is this something you overheard as well?" Lian Manman asked.
"Of course, it is." Si Lang responded right away, then glanced at Lian Manman and touched his head. He knew Lian Manman was not so easily fooled, so he told the truth, "This isn’t something I heard; it was Yaya who heard it."
"Then call Yaya over, I want to ask her in person." Lian Manman said.
Si Lang was a bit reluctant since he thought that if Yaya came over, it meant one more person to share the chicken leg with.
Lian Manman saw through Si Lang’s thoughts.
"You bring Yaya here, and if what you’re saying is true, you surely won’t miss out on your share." Lian Manman said.
"Alright, Manman, you have to keep your word." Si Lang said.
Lian Manman nodded.
"Xiao Liu, go and call Yaya over." Si Lang ordered Liulang to find Lian Yaya and crouched smilingly on the ground, trying to get chummy with Lian Manman. "Manman, why is the food you cook so delicious? Dad and Mom always praise you."
Lian Manman ignored him and made eye contact with Lian Zhizhi, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi, signaling them to keep calm.
After a while, Liulang brought Lian Yaya in from outside. Lian Yaya had undergone foot-binding three times, and only recently stopped crying and fussing, but her walking was still slow. Liulang, annoyed by her slow pace, had pulled her all the way here.
Lian Manman examined Lian Yaya’s feet, which were arched on top and appeared to be half their original size, making it look unsteady for her to stand. Lian Manman then fetched a stool for her.
"Yaya, sit down to talk." Lian Manman said to Lian Yaya.
"It’s fine for her to stand." Si Lang snatched the stool and wedged it underneath his own rear, "Mom says, she needs to stand more and walk more so her feet heal faster. The days of enjoying the benefits of bound feet are yet to come."
Si Lang was like this, even towards his own little sister. One might chalk it up to childish ignorance, yet Wu Lang, who was younger than Si Lang, always took good care of Lian Manman when she was around.
"Yaya, tell Sister Manman what you told me." Si Lang directed Lian Yaya.
"What did I say?" Lian Yaya was confused.
"The things you overheard Sister Huahua saying to the old aunt before going to the county town," Si Lang reminded her.
"Can I even speak of that?" Lian Yaya looked at Lian Manman and the others.
"It’s alright, go ahead and speak." Si Lang waved his hand dismissively.
"Sister Huahua said... Auntie doesn’t care about Grandmother, she only has eyes for Sister Zhizhi and Sister Manman. She mentioned that Auntie took Sister Manman into town, they went dining and bought a lot of stuff. Money that should have been spent on gifts for Grandmother was used to buy things for Sister Zhizhi and Sister Manman. Grandmother didn’t believe it at first, so Sister Huahua said, Sister Manman always talks back to Grandmother, how could a ten-year-old like Manman come up with those words on her own, it was all taught by Auntie. She accused Auntie of pretending to be nice on the outside but doing evil deeds behind the scenes..."
Lian Yaya recited in detail what she had overheard Lian Hua’er and Lian Xiuxiu saying to Lian Manman.
Lian Manman furrowed her brows. This seemed to be more than unfounded rumors; that day, they were in town eating steamed buns and buying fabric, and she had noticed that there seemed to be no one from Thirty Mile Camp nearby. Besides, even if people found out, so what? The main household had been enjoying the good life in town for many years now and had managed so far, and Lian Shouyi from the second household had followed the main household in eating and drinking—were such things really secrets? They had been using the public funds, while she had been spending money earned through the hard work of several children. Such things, no matter where they were spoken of, did not scare her.
She realized, had Sister Huahua and the others seen them that day as they were returning from the county by any chance?
No, that couldn’t be right. If it were true, Sister Huahua wouldn’t have kept quiet for several days before speaking up, and she would have surely told all the details of what happened that day to Lian Xiuxiu, including what they had bought. However, Lian Yaya’s eavesdropping only revealed general statements without specifics, which indicated that Sister Huahua didn’t actually know about the incident of that day. Those words must have been fabricated by Sister Huahua herself, aimed at inciting discord between Lian Xiuxiu and them.
