Chapter 143: Chapter 72 Lian Huahua Gets Injured_1
Pink supplement.

"Of course it’s true," said Lady He. "I’ve bought some at the dried fruit and grocery stores in town, but none are as tasty as yours. Manman, do you have any more? Give me some extra."
"You must be joking, Second Aunt, it can’t be tastier than what is bought in town, you still should..." Before Lian Manman could finish, she heard a piercing scream coming from the Upper Room. The scream was extremely miserable, as if something terrible had happened.
Lady He didn’t bother asking Lian Manman for more peanuts and hurried to the entrance of the Upper Room.
"Oh my, Huahua, what are you doing, did you fall into the stove pit?" Lady He leaned in the doorway, didn’t enter, and exclaimed in shock.
That scream sounded like it was Lian Huahua! Lian Manman couldn’t suppress her curiosity and also went to the Upper Room entrance to look inside.
The outer room’s floor was cluttered with firewood, Lian Duoduo was squatting under the stove, her face smeared with spots of soot and ash. Lian Huahua was standing there, her pant leg ablaze. Lian Huahua’s face went pale with fear, hopping on the spot, as though trying to flee the flames. Of course, this was futile; her silk pants caught fire incredibly quickly, and as they watched, half of her pant leg was engulfed in flames that had climbed up to her knee.
Lian Duoduo cried out of fear, unsure of what to do. Lady Chiang was in the back chopping vegetables and, hearing Lian Huahua’s cries, hurried over. She attempted to beat out the flames on Lian Huahua’s leg with her hands, but with little strength and fear of hurting Lian Huahua, it was ineffective.
Lian Huahua was both desperate and in pain, tears streaming down her face.
"Sister-in-law, think of something quick, it’s burning me," said Lian Huahua.
"Quick, get water, pour water over it," Lady Chiang finally had a flash of inspiration.
Hearing this, Lian Duoduo grabbed a nearby ladle, scooped up a ladle of water, and with both hands poured it over Lian Huahua’s leg.
The flames were indeed extinguished.
Before Lian Duoduo and Lady Chiang could even catch their breath, Lian Huahua let out a dreadful scream and collapsed on the ground.
"Duoduo, what kind of water did you take?" Lady Chiang hurried to help Lian Huahua and, sensing something wrong, asked Lian Duoduo.
"Water, it was just..." Lian Duoduo glanced into the large pot. She had never done household chores before, so in her panic, she grabbed the closest thing with water in it – the large pot.
It was a pot of boiling water, violently bubbling, with the fire still ablaze beneath it.
Lian Huahua had already passed out from the pain.
At that moment, Lady He finally released her grip from the door and walked into the room. Lian Manman followed her inside.
"Oh dear mother, how could it be this badly scalded, is her leg cooked?" Lady He looked at Lian Huahua’s leg. "Duoduo, how could you scald your sister Huahua with that boiling water, now her leg is ruined, your mother will beat you to death for this."
Lian Duoduo’s face turned white with fright, and after standing dazed for a moment, she ran towards the back yard.
At this time, Lady Chiang could no longer concern herself with Lian Duoduo; she also cried, sobbing while calling for Lian Jizu.
Lian Jizu, hearing the noise, came out, and seeing Lian Huahua’s condition, was taken aback. He and Lady Chiang carried Lian Huahua inside. Lady Gu, having heard the commotion, rushed back from the pigsty, and both Lady Zhou and Lian Xiu also came over.
Lian Jizu was then dispatched to fetch the doctor.
"What happened here, how did the two of them end up cooking?" Lian Manman was somewhat confused.
"You don’t know? Last night, your grandpa lost his temper. He said that those who work hard in the household never had any accidents and we can’t keep indulging the main branch of the family, so today it was their turn to cook. Your grandma also said to let them do the work themselves, no one was allowed to help," Lady He explained while smacking her lips.
No wonder she saw Lady Gu carrying a pig feed bucket to feed the pigs early in the morning. Yesterday, Lian Shouxin hadn’t told Zhang about this. In Lian Shouxin’s view, doing household chores was a matter of course and didn’t amount to any punishment.
It seems that the countryside families are different from those affluent city families. Lian Manman thought to herself, she had read many articles and novels in her past life. In those books, the punishments for women in affluent families often involved confinement, copying scripture, and at worst, kneeling in the ancestral hall. In the countryside, it wasn’t so elaborate. It appeared Old Master Lian, after consideration, believed the difference between the main branch and the other branches was whether they worked or not, thinking that labor could reform people. He intended to punish and reform Lian Huahua and the others by involving them in labor.
Who would have thought that on Lian Huahua’s first time cooking, such an incident would occur.
