Chapter 182: Chapter 94: Daughters Should Not Be Hit_1
It was already the fourth watch of the night, and Ruoyan continued to ask for support.

Everyone knew that Old Master Lian was about to scold Lady Zhou, and as the younger generation, it was quite awkward for them to stay in the room, so they left one after another. Lian Xiuxiu, considering herself an older unmarried daughter, did not move. Lian Yeye stood beside Old Master Lian and did not leave either. Lian Manman felt it was inappropriate to stay and followed Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang out the door, but as soon as she turned around, she leaned against the door, intending to eavesdrop.
Lady Zhang took a couple of steps and did not see Lian Manman follow; she turned back and saw Lian Manman pressing her small body against the door, even lifting a corner of the door curtain with her hand, staring inside without blinking. Lady Zhang wanted to pull Lian Manman away but then thought that Lian Manman definitely did not want to leave, so she let it be.
Lian Manman peeked through the gap in the door curtain into the room, where Old Master Lian sat on the edge of the kang, puffing away at his dry pipe. Lady Zhou and Lian Xiuxiu sat close together; Lady Zhou kept her back straight, and her face was very stiff.
After a moment of silence, Old Master Lian spoke again.
"Look at you, how old are you now? Every now and then, you make such a scene. Aren’t you ashamed?" Old Master Lian said to Lady Zhou.
"What am I ashamed of? They all crawled out of my intestines... Which one of them is trouble-free? If I don’t act this way, they’d turn the sky upside down," Lady Zhou was never one to be outdone in a verbal exchange.
"I think in this household, you are the one who never gives peace of mind. Just look at today’s matter, how big of a deal was it for you to create such a fuss?" Old Master Lian said, pointing the stem of his smoking pipe at Lady Zhou.
"How have I made a fuss? Why don’t you talk about how Old Three’s wife is threatening suicide? Which daughter-in-law doesn’t get spoken to by her mother-in-law? Only she is so precious. Fine, I’ll go apologize to her later, I’ll kowtow to her," Lady Zhou said viciously. She saw Lian Yeye return with Old Master Lian, and the first thing Old Master Lian asked when he entered was whether she planned to divorce Lady Zhao. Lady Zhou knew that Lian Yeye must have tattled to Old Master Lian, so without waiting for Old Master Lian to ask, she explained the matter and tried to justify herself.
"You still have the nerve to speak," Old Master Lian got angry, "And all this is over what? Weren’t those chives the ones you didn’t want, and gave to Old Fourth’s family? Isn’t Old Fourth your own son? Did Old Three’s wife neglecting her own work while helping Old Fourth’s family? After the division of the household, are they no longer brothers? Think about it, as a mother, should you be delighted the more estranged the brothers become?"
"Don’t make false accusations against me, when have I ever caused a rift between them?" Lady Zhou countered.
"Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to, you’re just waiting for the children to lose all affection for you, that will make you happy!" Old Master Lian was both angry and helpless.
"I’ve raised them in vain, they all forget their mother after getting a wife," Lady Zhou said and began to cry.
Watching from the outside, Lian Manman thought that in terms of fighting, Lady Zhou and Old Master Lian were truly well-matched, but then she saw Lady Zhou suddenly crying, and it wasn’t fake crying, but real tears.
Lady Zhou was truly heartbroken! It was because she felt her sons had been led astray by their wives, becoming unfilial and no longer of one mind with her. In her heart, her sons were supposed to be utterly obedient to her, her word was law; otherwise it was unfilial, it was forgetting their mother for their wives.
Lian Manman sighed inwardly; Lady Zhou was beyond help. Such a mother-in-law, regardless of the era or what kind of daughter-in-law, would never get along well. As her son, it would be better not to get married at all.
Seeing Lady Zhou crying, Old Master Lian was silent for a while.
"Don’t change the subject. I’m asking you, how has Old Three’s wife treated you? She’s such an honest person, why do you keep picking on her incessantly? Is it up to you to talk about divorce? Are you intentionally trying to drive her to her death? How do you expect people to look at our Old Lian Family?" Old Master Lian bombarded her with questions.
"That was just words spoken in haste," Lady Zhou retorted, "If it weren’t for..."
Lady Zhou glanced at Lian Yeye, "If she hadn’t angered me, I wouldn’t have said those words."
"Keep twisting the facts!" Old Master Lian was furious, as Lady Zhou had turned the topic around and circled back, "I shouldn’t be reasoning with an old woman like you."
Old Master Lian stood up, pointing at Lady Zhou with his smoking pipe.
"Today, if anything happens to Yeye’s mother, you’ll have to deal with it yourself. ... From now on, if you dare to mention divorcing Yeye’s mother again, you’ll be the one to get out of the Lian Family first," Old Master Lian said, before lifting the door curtain and going out.
Lady Zhou was choked up and speechless for quite a while.
Lian Yeye silently glanced at Lady Zhou before also turning around and leaving.
Now Lady Zhou was even more infuriated and began to cry and wail, clapping her hands. This time, only Lian Xiuxiu was beside her, comforting her, and no one else came over. Lady Zhou didn’t faint again as she used to; instead, after crying for a while, she gradually stopped. Perhaps it was thanks to the "ingenious remedy" from Manman, for quite a long time afterward, Lady Zhou didn’t have another attack.
Meanwhile, Lian Manman returned to the West Wing Room with Lian Yeye, and repeated what Old Master Lian had said for everyone to hear.
"Third sister-in-law, from now on, you can put your heart at ease," Lady Zhang said with a smile to Lady Zhao.
"I’ve said so before, Father already mentioned it, yet you always worry," said Lian Shouli.
"How can I not worry..." sighed Lady Zhao. Without a son, she always felt her position in the Lian Family was unstable, at risk of being thrown out at any moment.
"Third Aunt, you still have Yeye. Isn’t it said that daughters are a mother’s little padded jacket? Just take good care of Yeye, and with her, what do you have to fear?" said Lian Manman.
"Yeye is a good child; she’s been through a lot with me," Lady Zhao said.
"Third Aunt, then you should let Yeye suffer less," Lian Manman said.
Lady Zhao still sighed.
Lian Manman looked at Lady Zhao and Lian Shouli. Both were honest people, but Lian Manman had some dislike toward them because of their attitude toward Lian Yeye.
It wasn’t that this couple mistreated Lian Yeye or that they were not good to her. Instead, they were preoccupied with the son they never had, neglecting the daughter before them, even giving Lian Yeye a sense of guilt about her gender unintentionally.
This was an utterly foolish approach, and in the end, none of the three would be happy.
Without a son, they should cherish and treat the daughter even more dearly. Just a moment ago, Lian Shouli was about to hit Lian Yeye, pressured by Lady Zhou.
Lian Manman decided to lend Lian Yeye another hand.
"Father," Lian Manman tugged at Lian Shouxin’s sleeve, "daughters should not be hit."
