Chapter 221: Chapter 115: Making Trouble_1
"Second Sister, what’s wrong?" Xiao Qi followed Lian Manman into the room and, seeing her look like this, quickly asked.
"I’m fine." Lian Manman glanced at Xiao Qi nonchalantly and said with concern, "Xiao Qi, are you tired from walking? Go rest on the kang."
"Oh." Xiao Qi replied, walked to the edge of the kang but didn’t sit down. Instead, she giggled and ran towards the end of the kang.
"What are you doing over there, Xiao Qi?" Lian Manman asked curiously.
Xiao Qi stood there, covering her mouth and laughing as she watched Lian Manman.
"Second Sister, I know the kang is hot and will burn my bottom. I’m not sitting there. If I sit, it’ll be at the end of the kang," Xiao Qi said, her voice shaking with laughter.
Lian Manman immediately felt rage bubble up to the surface and made a grab for Xiao Qi. The fire had been burning too hot today, and the kang was overheated, but Lian Manman had completely forgotten about that. She had just sat down and immediately jumped up, scalded. Xiao Qi, that little devil, knew it all along but still deliberately asked her, and now she was openly laughing at her. Of course, Lian Manman wouldn’t admit that she had wanted Xiao Qi to fall for it too and scald her bottom by sitting on the kang.
Of course, Xiao Qi wouldn’t just stand there to be caught by Lian Manman. The two children, one running and one chasing, were creating a ruckus when Lian Shouxin, Lady Zhang, Lian Zhizhi, and Wu Lang walked into the room.
Xiao Qi quickly hid behind Lady Zhang, grabbing the hem of her clothes and coquettishly crying out, "Mother, save me!"
"What are you two doing? You’re about to bring the roof down," Lady Zhang said, laughing.
Lian Manman quickly made eye signals to Xiao Qi, telling her not to mention the incident of her scalded bottom. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as she wished.
"Second Sister just sat on the kang," Xiao Qi pointed towards the head of the kang and said.
The whole family understood then and looked at Lian Manman with a smile in their eyes.
Lian Manman could do nothing. After all, she wasn’t "born and raised" here. It was nothing strange that she forgot about the kang’s heat-retaining property.
"I rolled up this kang mat when Zhizhi and I went out. Did you unroll it, Manman?" Lady Zhang walked to the head of the kang and looked at the mat. Since the kang was too hot, she and Lian Zhizhi had rolled up the mat specially so that it wouldn’t get baked.
"Not me." Lian Manman walked over, "When I came into the room, the kang mat was already like this." If the mat had been rolled up, Lian Manman surely wouldn’t have sat down on it.
"That’s strange." Lian Zhizhi also came over, "I was worried it would come undone, so I even put something heavy on it."
"Mother, when you and Sister left, you didn’t lock the door," Lian Manman said assertively. She was the first one to enter the room, and had noticed that the door was unlocked.
"Nothing of value in our house, I only asked your third aunt and Yeye to watch over it a bit, so I didn’t lock the door."
"Where is third aunt and Yeye?" Lian Manman asked, "Why haven’t I heard them talking?"
Xiao Qi ran out and then back after a short while.
"Third aunt and Yeye are not at home," she ed.
Lian Manman’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly took off her shoes to get on the kang, opening the cabinet she shared with Lian Zhizhi.
"Sister," Lian Manman turned to call Lian Zhizhi, "did you go through the cabinet?"
"No." Lian Zhizhi said as she climbed up onto the kang and joined Lian Manman to check.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary in the cabinet, but the account books they’d just made, which were supposed to be placed separately, were now wedged between several old clothes.
Lian Manman and Lian Zhizhi exchanged a glance.
"What’s happened here?!"
Lian Manman hurriedly took out her wooden chest from the corner of the cabinet. The lock on it was still intact. She breathed a sigh of relief but still took out the key to unlock the wooden chest. After counting to make sure the correct amount of Silver was still there, she truly relaxed and put the chest back in its place.
"Let’s check other places to see if anything is missing," Lian Manman instructed.
Lady Zhang, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi also joined the search, and soon they had inspected everywhere inside and outside the house.
"Everything’s here..." But there were signs of tampering, especially in their wardrobes.
Lian Shouxin sat at the end of the kang, silent and still.
"We’ve already separated our households!" Lady Zhang plopped down next to Lian Shouxin, irritated.
Lian Shouxin’s face turned beet red as he hung his head, still not speaking.
"Mother, you know who it is!" Lian Manman understood the situation.
"Dear," Lian Shouxin called out softly, using a pleading tone.
"What’s the use of begging me? The children are all grown up, they can’t be fooled!" Lady Zhang said, "You’d better go and persuade..."
