Chapter 233: Chapter 121: Such a Coincidence_1
Lian Manman was startled by the scream and had no idea what had happened. In a rush, she lifted the door curtain and ran into the house. Inside, chaos reigned. Song Hailong stood by the table, cradling a faintly breathing Lian Huahua in his arms. A chair lay overturned at his feet, alongside a soup basin. The soup had spilled onto the floor and was still emitting steam. Lian Yeye was standing there, stunned, with a serving tray in one hand and tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Huahua, Huahua, are you alright?" Song Hailong called out anxiously.
Lady Gu and Lady Chiang also gathered around Lian Huahua, bombarding her with questions.
"I, I’m fine." Lian Huahua slowly straightened up. Though they were betrothed, being held like this by Song Hailong in front of others was unseemly. She furrowed her brow slightly, seeming to be bravely enduring the pain. "Brother Hailong, are you hurt?"
"Huahua, thanks to you shielding me, I wasn’t scalded at all," said Song Hailong, deeply moved that Lian Huahua was still concerned about him at such a time.
"But that was a basin of boiling soup, and your leg..." Lady Gu propped up Lian Huahua.
Lian Huahua leaned slightly against Lady Gu, and it was only then that Lian Manman noticed that the bottom half of Lian Huahua’s skirt was soaked.
"Mother, I’m alright," Lian Huahua insisted bravely, but soon after, she seemed unable to hold herself up any longer and cried out, "Mother, my leg hurts so much."
"This scalding injury is serious, quick, call the doctor," Song Hailong urged.
"I’ll go," said Lian Jizu impulsively, rushing out the door.
"Let him go. He knows the village well," said Lady Gu.
Lady Gu and Lady Chiang half-led, half-carried Lian Huahua toward the west room. Song Hailong wanted to follow, but Lady Chiang turned and stopped him.
"Young Master Song, why don’t you rest in the east room?" said Lady Chiang politely to Song Hailong.
Lian Huahua had been scalded on her lower body; changing her clothes was inevitable, and having Song Hailong there would have been inconvenient.
Realizing this, though anxious, Song Hailong had no choice. He didn’t go to rest in the east room but walked out to the courtyard, hoping for the doctor to arrive as soon as possible.
After such an incident, of course, no one felt like eating or drinking.
In the east room, Lady Zhang picked up the soup basin that had fallen to the ground and began sweeping the floor with a broom. Lady Zhao held Lian Yeye as she stood crying silently in the corner. Old Master Lian, Lady Zhou, and others, whether seated or standing, all wore grim expressions, and no one made a sound.
"What happened here?" Although Lian Manman had an inkling, she couldn’t help but ask.
"It’s all Yeye’s fault," said Lian Xiuxiu, pointing at Lian Yeye, "She couldn’t even carry a tray of soup steadily. If it hadn’t been for Huahua stepping in, that basin would have spilled all over Young Master Song."
"If you ask me, the soup was about to pour right onto Young Master Song’s face. He was sitting down after all," added Lady He from the side.
As Lian Xiuxiu and Lady He went back and forth, Lian Manman finally understood the situation.
"Clumsy and not fit for the table," Lian Xiuxiu said contemptuously, glancing at Lian Yeye.
"It wasn’t me," Lian Yeye suddenly broke free from Lady Zhao, and while crying, she defended herself, blushing, "I was carrying it steadily. It was Aunt who bumped into me, causing the soup to spill."
Lady Zhang, who was sweeping the floor, paused, while Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou both quickly glanced at Lian Shouren. The room suddenly fell into an eerie silence.
"Ah, now you’ve learned to lie, too. Why don’t you say it was your older sister-in-law intending to scald her new brother-in-law with that soup?" Lian Xiuxiu mocked with a sneer.
"I’m not lying. What I said is true," Lian Yeye protested urgently.
At that moment, Lady Chiang walked in, lifting the curtain from outside.
"How is Huahua doing?" everyone asked anxiously.
"...she’s got a big red burn," Lady Chiang’s face seemed a bit odd as she spoke in a low voice, "Mother told Father and Grandma not to be hard on Yeye. Yeye is young; she doesn’t have much strength and shouldn’t have been asked to carry the soup. Mother said it was her oversight. Yeye wouldn’t do it on purpose, we’re all flesh and blood here; we can’t really talk about it."
"Look at how well your elder sister treats you, yet you still make up stories about her. You should examine your conscience." Hearing Lady Chiang say this, Lian Xiuxiu glared at Lian Yeye, making a sarcastic remark.
"You shut your mouth," Lady Zhou scolded Lian Xiuxiu in a low voice, then glared repeatedly at Lady Chiang’s face.
Lady Chiang seemed unable to withstand Lady Zhou’s gaze and lowered her head slightly.
"Father, Grandma, Huahua still needs someone to care for her, I, I should go check on her." Lady Chiang said before hurriedly turning and leaving.
"I’m wronged...I..." Lian Yeye burst into a loud cry.
Lady Zhao quickly embraced Lian Yeye into her arms.
"What are you crying for, putting on such a show for someone?" Lady Zhou thought for a moment then spoke sternly, "The soup was indeed carried by you, and it’s also true that it burned someone. Lady Zhao, take Yeye back to your room and stay put. There are guests in the house. If any of you cause a scene with crying and yelling, get out of the Lian Family home..."
"Did you hear me clear, Lady Zhao! And you, Old Three, wipe that face and take Yeye back to your room." As if afraid Lady Zhao had not heard her clearly, Lady Zhou repeated her words, instructing Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao to take Lian Yeye back to their room.
"Yes." Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao really replied and were about to take Lian Yeye out.
"I don’t, I..." Lian Yeye wanted to speak, but Lady Zhao covered her mouth and carried her away.
Lady Zhou snorted coldly, turned over on the bed, facing away from the window, seemingly lost in thought.
Lian Manman came out from the east room, wanting to check on Lian Huahua in the west room, but found the door to the west room barred. Lian Manman thought for a moment, kept silent, and left the Upper Room.
Song Hailong was pacing back and forth in the yard, looking very anxious.
"Sister Manman, could you please check on Sister Huahua for me, see how she is doing?" Upon seeing Lian Manman, Song Hailong hurried over and said.
"Oh...sure." Lian Manman was just about to go to the west room when she readily agreed.
"Thank you, Sister Manman," Song Hailong bowed slightly and said with a smile, his demeanor quite suave.
Lian Manman didn’t say much, turned back into the Upper Room, and headed towards the west room, as expected, the door was still barred.
"Elder sister, please open the door. Older sister’s husband Song is asking how Sister Huahua is doing, he begged me to come and have a look," Lian Manman said towards the door.
Soon, Lady Chiang opened the door.
"It’s Manman, come in," she said.
Lian Manman entered the room and saw Lian Huahua had already changed into new clothes, half-reclining on a pillow, with her legs completely covered by her skirt, revealing only her dainty feet in their embroidered soft shoes.
"Elder sister, you didn’t go and tell Hailong just now, did you? Why has he sent Manman to check on me?" Lian Huahua said timidly. She addressed her words to Lady Chiang, but her gaze swept back and forth across Lian Manman’s face.
