Chapter 45: Chapter 28 Arrow Like a Rainbow_1
"I’m just a girl from the countryside; I don’t know much, but I do know what should be said and what shouldn’t," she said. "I promise that after today, I’ll forget everything as if nothing ever happened. I won’t mention it in front of anyone... not even a single word."
Lian Manman cautiously observed the man as she spoke.
The man eyed Lian Manman with a probing gaze. He had been pursued and was nearly exhausted, but there was still an assassin closely following him. He knew if he kept running, the assassin would kill him. So he chose this mound to sit and wait, ready to face the assassin when he arrived. Lian Manman’s sudden appearance made him initially think she was another assassin sent by his enemy. He didn’t kill her right away because the way she dropped from the sky didn’t seem like how an assassin would operate; she lacked murderous intent and had exposed too many vulnerabilities. Moreover, he had just enough strength left for one last fight.
Despite this, he didn’t relax his guard.
If Lian Manman showed even the slightest hint of threat, he would not hesitate to kill her. However, her composure was rare, and she devoted herself to treating his wounds.
Eventually, the assassin caught up. He pretended to let Lian Manman tend to his wounds, deliberately revealing weaknesses, which led the assassin to strike, allowing him to kill him with his last hidden crossbow bolt.
It was true that Lian Manman had helped him, but his affairs couldn’t be known to anyone.
He had intended to kill Lian Manman to keep her silent.
However, Lian Manman’s calmness had quelled his urge to kill. She was not overly talkative, smart but didn’t show off her intelligence, just smart in the right measure—that was indeed rare.
"I definitely don’t want to cause any trouble," Lian Manman said, looking directly at the man.
"How old are you?" the man asked instead of answering.
"Ten," Lian Manman replied.
"Why don’t you bind your feet?" the man asked softly, feeling surprised at his own question as soon as he said it.
"Not every girl binds her feet," Lian Manman answered with some puzzlement yet replied, "There must be someone to do the work at home. Besides, I don’t like binding my feet."
Upon saying this, Lian Manman stopped talking abruptly. Why was she telling him this?
"You should bind your feet," the man said again.
Discussing this topic under such circumstances was bizarre; this time, Lian Manman remained quiet.
Lian Manman had treated all the man’s wounds.
"Don’t you need help?" Lian Manman asked, "I mean, if you’re hungry, I could find you something to eat." She figured the man would survive, and while he seemed to be in a good mood, she wanted to get away as soon as possible.
The man looked at Lian Manman, his pupils deep black, as if he could see right into her heart. This was not a gaze a normal person should have.
"You can go," the man said.
"Alright then," Lian Manman swiftly got up to leave, surprised that the man was so easygoing.
"Wait a moment."
Lian Manman had picked up her basket and had only taken a few steps when she heard the man call out from behind.
Lian Manman’s body stiffened. She hoped he hadn’t changed his mind. She wanted to run, but remembering how the man had dealt with the black-clothed man earlier, she dared not take the risk, not knowing if he had any more hidden crossbow bolts up his sleeve.
"What is it?" Lian Manman turned slowly and asked calmly.
The man was still leaning against the mound, the sunlight hitting his face, rendering his expression unreadable to Lian Manman.
"I forgot to ask your name," the man said.
"Oh, I..." Lian Manman hesitated, wondering if she should give a false name. On second thought, she saw no need, "My name is Manman, Lian Manman."
"Lian Manman," the man repeated softly, then nodded at Lian Manman, "You may go."
"Take care," Lian Manman responded, turning away once more. When she thought she was out of the man’s line of sight, she looked back and, sure enough, could no longer see the man. She then started to jog away.
She was safe! Not until she ran out of the mountains did Lian Manman stop to catch her breath, thinking she should be safe now.
"Big Sister, where did you go? Why were you gone for so long?" Xiao Qi came over, taking the basket from Lian Manman’s hands; finding it empty, he asked curiously, "Eh, sis, didn’t you say you were going to pick sour dates?"
"I suddenly felt a bit unwell, so I sat under the tree shade for a while," Lian Manman replied. She didn’t plan on telling anyone about what just happened, not because she wanted to keep her promise, but simply to avoid trouble. It was best to forget such experiences as soon as possible.
