Chapter 47: Chapter 29 Idle Talk_1
Lian Manman glanced around, and the one that stood out the most was Yingzi, with her dark complexion, next to her was a girl named Qi Qiao. Two sisters who looked very alike, both clad in blue garments; one was named Chun Ni and the other, Chun Yan. The youngest one was Er Ya, known for having the Sweet Girl in their house. Another slightly older girl was called Xiao Hong.
All of them were acquaintances of Lian Manman, among whom Chun Ni, Chun Yan, and Er Ya used to play with her often. The others, however, were closer to Lian Huahua.
"Lian Manman, why don’t you play with us anymore?" Er Ya ran up to Lian Manman and said.
"Lian Manman, come and take a rest." Xiao Hong called out as she sat in the shade of a tree.
"Manman, dinner at home is still a while off, it’s cooler here. If you want to play, play for a bit and then go home," Wu Lang said.
"Sister, after I deliver the fish and the grass with Brother, I’ll come back to find you," Xiao Qi said.
Lian Manman thought it over, realizing that since she had arrived here, she hadn’t interacted with the girls from the village at all. She was going to live here in the future, and it seemed wrong to ignore all her little friends.
Lian Manman handed her basket to Wu Lang to carry back home and followed Er Ya to the willow tree, where Chun Ni and Chun Yan shifted aside to make room on the stone stool for both Lian Manman and Er Ya to sit.
"Manman, is your head all better now?" The girls asked.
Lian Manman nodded, "All better. Look, the bandage has even been removed."
"I heard you’ve forgotten some things," Xiao Hong said, looking at Lian Manman.
"They say you hit your head and became silly," Qi Qiao, always quick to speak, said.
"Who said I’m silly?" Lian Manman asked with a smile.
Qi Qiao glanced at Xiao Hong, clearly indicating that Xiao Hong had told her.
Yingzi couldn’t help but snicker at the side.
"I haven’t said anything," Xiao Hong immediately denied, feeling indignant at Yingzi’s laughter, "Some have even said you were completely dead."
As Xiao Hong spoke, she looked at Yingzi.
Due to their living environment, even if village girls have some cunning, it’s often displayed openly.
"As you can see, I’m perfectly fine now. If anyone else says such a thing, I’ll take it as a curse," Lian Manman said.
"Sister Manman is right; from now on, no one is allowed to say such things," Qi Qiao quickly spoke up.
Lian Manman, feeling bored, thought about getting up to leave.
"Manman, did Sister Huahua go to the county town? When is she coming back, and what kind of dowry has she prepared?" Xiao Hong asked, holding onto Lian Manman as she fired off a series of questions.
The other girls all looked eagerly at Lian Manman.
Just the day before yesterday, Lady Gu along with the Eldest of the Lian Family, the second-eldest took Lian Huahua, Lian Duoduo, and Lian Xiuxiu to the county town to arrange for Lian Huahua’s dowry with the assistance of Lian Lanlan.
The girls clinging to her for conversation, couldn’t just be curiosity about Lian Huahua’s news. Lian Manman had a sudden realization; ever since the engagement gift was smashed, Qi Qiao, Xiao Hong, and Yingzi were present at the time, and from then on, the Lian family considered them persona non grata. Lian Huahua also stopped inviting village girls over, and Lady Zhou was even less welcoming to any girls who dared to come to their doorstep. This was also why, for so many days, no one had come to play with her or Lian Zhizhi.
Even though these girls were no longer welcome in the Lian family, the marriage of Lian Huahua still remained a focal point of their interest.
Lian Manman, a bit speechlessly, observed the girls; Xiao Hong and Yingzi, being somewhat older, let it pass, but even the younger ones around her age started to concern themselves with such matters.
"Yes, she went to get a dowry. She should be back in a couple of days," Lian Manman still divulged some information to them, "Once the dowry is arranged, it will be brought back to the village, and all of you will be able to see it."
"Really?" Qi Qiao exclaimed.
"Yes, Qi Qiao, when the time comes, come over to our home with my great-aunt to have a look," Lian Huahua told Qi Qiao. Lady Zhou’s cousin was married into a family named Zheng in Thirty Mile Camp, and Qi Qiao was the granddaughter of Lady Zhou’s cousin, making her and Lian Huahua cousins.
"Alright," Qi Qiao eagerly responded.
"Lian Huahua is truly going off to enjoy good fortune," Yingzi commented as she lifted her arm, revealing a glittering gold bracelet tight around her plump wrist.
The girls’ eyes were dazzled by the shine of the gold, their gazes filled with envy.
"Yingzi, your bracelet is so beautiful, I never get tired of looking at it," Chun Ni complimented.
"It’s just that the style is a bit old," Xiao Hong pursed her lips. Every time Yingzi appeared, she would flaunt that gold bracelet.
