******......********
Lian Shouren and Lady Gu both calmed down to listen to Lian Huahua speak.
"Uncle Four and Auntie Four keep harping on and on about a human life, but so much time has passed, and Manman is perfectly fine, even more spirited than before. Don’t they realize that stirring up trouble now could ruin Father’s future prospects? If they truly understood the situation as Grandfather says and cared for the bigger picture and treated us like family, they wouldn’t bring this matter up again. But look at them now, even raising hands against Father and Mother. They just don’t see us in their eyes..." Lian Huahua said in a soft voice.
"Huahua is right. You still consider them your brothers and think of pulling them up with you when you become an official. But they see you as the enemy!" Lady Gu said.
Lian Shouren didn’t speak.
"Marrying you, I carried the name of a scholar’s wife, but I’ve not had a single good day. From the moment I entered this household, a young maiden like me had to care for your children, serving the old and the young. And to top it off, I even get hit by your brother’s wife. You call yourself a man? And you still want to be an official? How honorable you must feel..." Lady Gu grumbled.
"Do you think I’m happy about it?" Lian Shouren said, annoyed by her words.
"You, you are even getting mad at me now." Seeing Lian Shouren get angry, Lady Gu lost her previous aggressive tone and started crying softly, "It’s my misfortune not to have a son. If I had a son, I wouldn’t have to endure such humiliation."
"Isn’t Jizu your son?" Lian Shouren asked.
Lady Gu said nothing.
"Mother, even if you don’t have a son, you have daughters. Don’t worry, I will avenge you." Lian Huahua said.
"Huahua, do you have a plan?" Lady Gu’s eyes immediately lit up.
"Calm down. If something else happens, it won’t be easy to fool the Old Master." Lian Shouren said.
"If something else happens and it isn’t related to us, could Grandfather blame us for it?" Lian Huahua said with a smile.
"Huahua, have you thought of a good idea?" Lady Gu moved closer to Lian Huahua and whispered.
"We don’t even need to lift a finger; someone else will take care of it for us, guaranteed to make them suffer in silence." Lian Huahua pointed towards the direction of the West Wing Room.
"You mean..."
Lian Huahua nodded. Borrowing a knife to kill someone had always been an excellent strategy.
Lady Gu and Lian Huahua whispered together, heads close.
......
At the next morning’s breakfast table, Lady Zhang felt a bit awkward upon seeing Lady Gu, but Lady Gu was as usual, even a bit more smiling than normal. Lian Huahua also appeared very gentle, and though she only showed closeness to Lian Xiuxiu, when her gaze swept over the other cousins, her face even carried a trace of a smile. Only Lian Duoduo was pouting, and when she caught Lian Manman looking at her, she glared right back.
Lian Manman lowered her head and continued to eat her rice.
"This pig stomach is from Gu Shun Zhai in the county city, fragrant but not greasy, and it’s stomach-nurturing. Manman, you should eat more." Lady Gu put a chopstick full of pig stomach into Lian Manman’s bowl.
Lian Manman looked up and saw Lady Gu’s face bloom into a smile, then she added another chopstick full for Lady Zhang, "Fourth Sister-in-law, have some as well."
Lian Manman was slightly surprised. Lady Gu usually only made efforts for Lady Zhou and Lian Xiuxiu; she was usually indifferent towards the rest of them. What was this sudden overture today... was she trying to make amends?
Did Lady Gu realize her own mistake and feel guilty towards them? If she truly were ten years old, she might think that way. But just one glance at Lady Gu’s smiles spreading across the entire room was enough to tell that Lady Gu was putting on a show for everyone.
"Elder Aunt, today’s steamed bread is delicious, it’s specially made by my mother who got up early in the morning and kneaded the dough for a long time before steaming it. Elder Aunt, you were still sleeping and didn’t get up at that time. Try it and see, it’s no worse than the white steamed bread you eat in town." Lian Manman said.
Lady Gu was playing her part, wanting to demonstrate her magnanimity and forgiveness, but Lian Manman was just as capable of playing the game. Today’s breakfast was prepared by Lady Zhang and Lady Zhao, while according to the schedule, it was Lady Gu’s turn to cook. Compared to Lady Gu’s superficial and low-grade show, Lady Zhang was obviously much more generous, truly magnanimous.
"It’s your turn to cook today, don’t be late for lunch." Lady Zhou said to Lady Gu.
Lady Gu had no choice but to agree with a smile.
"Elder Aunt, this is new pickled vegetables my mother preserved this year." Lian Manman placed a large chopstick full of salty vegetable strips into Lady Gu’s bowl.
These salty strips were meant to be eaten with rice, and in Xiao Qi’s words, they were extremely salty.
Lian Manman watched Lady Gu with a smile, "This is my mother’s fine craft; you can’t find it in town or the county, Elder Aunt, make sure you eat plenty."
The smile on Lady Gu’s face stiffened a little.
"Sister Huahua, Duoduo, you both should eat as well. I see you’re not touching your chopsticks..." Lian Manman reached out to serve salty vegetables to Lian Huahua and Lian Duoduo.
