Chapter 77: Chapter 44 Contradiction_1
The second watch of the night, seeking subscriptions, pink hearts, and all kinds of votes.
*******......*************
It must be said that the appeal of white-flour pancakes was indeed very strong. When Old Master Lian returned home, he saw that his sons and grandsons had already cut a good large patch of barnyard millet.
By noon, when work stopped, everyone was laughing on their way home, especially Sanlang, Si Lang, and Liulang from the second household, who almost raced merrily home.
Lady He felt somewhat uncomfortable seeing this.
"His eldest uncle’s family enjoys white rice and flour, chicken, duck, fish, and meat all year round, while our children can’t have a decent meal once in a year. They’re all his grandfather and grandmother’s grandsons too," Lady He muttered to Lian Shouyi.
"It’ll be fine once his eldest uncle becomes an official. We’ll make up for all the good food we’ve never had before," said Lian Shouyi.
Indeed, if it weren’t for this hope, she wouldn’t have endured all these years. With this thought, Lady He took another look at Lian Shouyi.
"Don’t think I don’t know, every time you go to town with your brother, you eat well. The last time you went to pay back money, you even went to a restaurant for drinks, didn’t you?"
"Don’t talk nonsense, someone might hear," Lian Shouyi glanced back at Lian Shouli and Lian Shouxin’s families walking behind him. "When have I not brought something back for you guys when I’ve had good food?"
"One bite isn’t enough for anyone," Lady He was still unsatisfied.
"Let it go, let it go, the good days are just around the corner, no use fussing over the useless stuff now," said Lian Shouyi, leaving Lady He behind to go talk to Old Master Lian.
Lady He then turned her head to look at Lian Manman. She had brought an empty water jar today on purpose, intending to make a trip back home halfway through the day; she had guessed that the main household would certainly start a private stove for cooking. She had planned to be back just in time to join in the meal. Old Master Lian didn’t let her return, but he sent Manman and Wu Lang back instead.
Lian Manman, that girl, really had guts—to actually complain to Old Master Lian and even provoke him into promising everyone white-flour pancakes. This was good too, as her family could also enjoy a meal to satisfy their cravings.
Just what Old Master Lian had said to Lady Zhou, Lian Xiuxiu, and those from the main household upon his return, she didn’t know. They must hate those from the fourth household even more now. Given Lady Zhou and Lian Xiuxiu’s temperaments, who knew how they would seek their revenge
There would be some excitement to watch now, and thinking of this, Lady He couldn’t help but smile.
"Manman, we can have white-flour pancakes today, all thanks to your blessing," Lady He said to Lian Manman with a smile.
Lian Manman gave Lady He a look, feeling that her smile was somewhat malicious.
"What are you saying, second auntie? It’s the Old Master who wants us all to have white-flour pancakes," said Lian Manman.
In the outer room of the upper room, Lian Xiuxiu sat by the stove burning firewood, her eyes red as rotten peaches. Lady Zhou was making pancakes with a stern face, while Lady Chiang next to her kneaded dough and made pancakes, looking as if nothing was the matter, though it seemed she had reapplied her makeup. Lian Shouren, Lian Jizu, and Lady Gu with her daughters were all inside the west room, not coming out.
Old Master Lian never scolded his daughters-in-law directly, let alone his granddaughters-in-law. However, it seemed that Lian Xiuxiu had been severely rebuked.
Lady He rushed into the upper room first, cheerfully greeting Lady Zhou, then said to Lian Xiuxiu, "Xiuxiu, take a break, let me do the fire."
Whether it was the stimulus of the white-flour pancakes or to show off in front of Lady Zhou, Lady He surprisingly had moments of eagerness to work.
But Lian Xiuxiu was ungrateful, only looking up and glaring fiercely at Lady He.
"You’re so kind-hearted? Are you afraid that I and mother will sneak some pancakes, or afraid of skimping out on your share, so you want to supervise us, huh?"
Lady He was taken aback by Lian Xiuxiu’s blunt words.
"Xiuxiu, I’m just afraid you’ll get tired, in this dark and dingy place, it could dirty your face," said Lady He.
"Whether I’m dirty or not, that’s my fate. I don’t need your fake kindness, throwing a spanner in the works behind my back. I know I’m a tenant farmer’s daughter, waiting for my second sister-in-law to get rich and grace me with a meal," said Lian Xiuxiu.
Repeatedly ridiculed by Lian Xiuxiu, Lady He, who wasn’t one to take things lying down, couldn’t stand it.
"You still going on about it? It’s just that someone saw you greedily sneaking food and father scolded you. Why take it out on me?" retorted Lady He immediately.
This hit right where Lian Xiuxiu was most sensitive. Furious, she threw a piece of firewood at Lady He. It was taken from the stove and still had flames on it. Lady He didn’t dodge promptly, and the burning piece of wood fell on her foot.
Lady He quickly kicked the firewood away, but her foot was still scorched.
