Chapter 81

Chapter 81: Chapter 46 Critical Condition_2
"Nurse, quickly go fetch a doctor for my mother," Lian Manman pleaded, clutching at Lady Zhou’s clothing.
"Doctor Li has just left, and I’ve already called for the midwife and doctors; this is fate," Lady Zhou said.
"In town, there are better doctors in town," Lian Manman said.
"What do you, a little girl, understand? Even immortals couldn’t save her in this situation," Lady Zhou said as she pushed Lian Manman away. "All of you, get out. This is not a place for you to be."
"Mother, I’ll go to town to fetch a doctor," Lian Shouxin stood up and said.
Lady Zhou’s eyes widened; she let go of Lady Zhang’s hand. "Old Fourth, come with me. I have something to discuss with you." Lady Zhou pulled Lian Shouxin out of the room.
"Mother," the children in the room cried together in one voice.
Lady Zhang struggled, her eyes sweeping over the faces of her children.
"Mother, mother, I’m sorry for you all. In the future..."
"Mother, you won’t have any problems. I, I will find someone to save you."
"Fourth Aunt," Lady Chiang, walking in from outside at some point, took out a small paper packet from her bosom, fetching out a few thin slices of ginseng, "Here are some ginseng slices, let Fourth Aunt hold them in her mouth, maybe..."
"Sister-in-law..."
"This is all I have, maybe it will help," Lady Chiang whispered.
Lian Manman took the ginseng slices from Lady Chiang’s hand and placed them in Lady Zhang’s mouth.
"Mother, you must hold on, for us, you must hold on as well. I’m going to find someone to save you right now."
Lian Manman turned and ran out of the Lian Family home, followed by Lian Zhizhi, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi.
"Sister, you stay home and care for mother; I don’t trust the others," Lian Manman stopped Lian Zhizhi.
Lian Zhizhi halted, thought for a moment, then nodded her head.
"Manman, you must save our mother," she said.
Lian Manman nodded solemnly.
Lian Manman sprinted away from the Lian Family home, heading straight for Qingyang Town. To save Lady Zhang, the only person that came to her mind was Wang Youheng. As Lian Manman ran, she thought about how Lady Zhang was like an overly soft steamed bun, often making her feel pity for her reluctance to fight. But now, all she thought of were Lady Zhang’s good qualities.
Lady Zhang was hardworking and capable. Though their clothes were old and tattered, she kept them clean and well-starched. Even the patches Lady Zhang sewed were so meticulously done that they were almost unnoticeable.
Lady Zhang had a good nature, never beating or scolding them, and she was reasonable. If Lian Manman could present a good argument, Lady Zhang would listen to her. Even in her previous era, not every mother was able to respect her children in this way.
Apart from being too soft, Lady Zhang was a good person, a good mother; she should not die.
If Lady Zhang were to die, she, Lian Zhizhi, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi would become motherless children. If Lian Shouxin were to remarry, then they would have to beg for a living under a stepmother.
A soft mother, but still her own. She might complain normally, but if it meant trading her real mother for a stepmother, she absolutely wouldn’t want that.
Lady Zhang must not die, and neither can the child in her womb, only four months old. As her older sister, she had not even been aware of his existence; it must be a very sensible, well-behaved child.
Regardless, she was determined to save them.
Her large feet were an advantage; the days of labor in the fields and mountains were not in vain. Covering three to four li, Lian Manman took only about half a quarter of an hour to reach the town. When she finally saw the signboard of Jisheng Hall from afar, her heart once again thanked her sturdy legs. She had even left Wu Lang and Xiao Qi far behind.
A carriage was parked outside Jisheng Hall, and Shopkeeper Wang stood beside it, seemingly giving a few instructions before the coachman cracked his whip, and the carriage rattled into motion.
"Brother Youheng," Lian Manman shouted. She didn’t know if the person inside the carriage was Wang Youheng, but she knew she couldn’t miss any opportunity. A missed chance could mean the cost of two lives. As she called out, Lian Manman quickened her pace and chased after the carriage.
The carriage slowly came to a stop, and Wang Youheng poked his head out of the carriage window, spotting the desperately running Lian Manman at first glance.
By this time, Lian Manman had reached the side of the carriage, clinging tightly to it, terrified that it might pull away.
"Manman, what has happened?" Wang Youheng urgently asked.
Lian Manman’s small face was flushed from running, and she gasped for air.
"Brother Youheng, please save my mother," Lian Manman pleaded like she was grasping at a lifeline.
"What happened to Aunt Lian Si?"
"My mother, my mother has had a miscarriage, she’s bleeding a lot. They said she won’t survive. Brother Youheng, you must save my mother, she’s a good person, I don’t want to be a child without a mother."
"All right, all right, Manman, don’t cry, I’ll help you," Wang Youheng jumped down from the carriage and ordered the coachman, "Turn the carriage around."
"Young Owner, you’ve already arranged with the master and mistress to attend the old lady’s longevity celebration. If we don’t leave now, we’ll miss it. It would be hard to explain to the master and mistress," the coachman said.
"Are you listening to me or yourself? Turn the carriage around now," Wang Youheng’s expression turned stern.
The coachman dared not make another sound. Among the young masters of the Wang Family, Wang Youheng was the most amiable, but once he decided on something, he was the most obstinate.
Shopkeeper Wang approached, having not yet entered the store; he had heard all that Lian Manman and Wang Youheng had said.
"Young Owner, these symptoms are beyond your expertise, it’s better to send Doctor Lu, the resident physician," Shopkeeper Wang approached and suggested.
Pregnancy and childbirth are as perilous as passing through the gates of hell, and preterm labor with bleeding is even more dangerous. Since the local doctors had already given up hope, it was likely there was no saving her. Wang Youheng should not take this responsibility upon himself. Sending Doctor Lu to do what’s humanly possible and leave the rest to fate would already be a huge favor.
Shopkeeper Wang leaned in close to Wang Youheng and tactfully communicated his perspective.
"It would be no benefit to the patient for the Young Owner to stay here. You should return to the county town to fulfill your filial duties. I will personally take Doctor Lu to the Lian Family," Shopkeeper Wang added.
Such a gesture would be a tremendous favor and thoughtfully arranged, which, of course, Wang Youheng understood perfectly well.
"Brother Youheng."
