Chapter 282: It’s time for action.
Roberto’s phone buzzed, cutting off their conversation. A new message notification flashed across the screen. He opened it and found a photograph of a black car trailing right behind Nathaniel’s vehicle.
"Is this the same car that was following you that day?" Roberto asked, holding the phone up so Nathaniel could see.
Nathaniel narrowed his eyes at the image. The moment the car came into focus, he recognized it instantly. "Yes, that’s the one. Who is the driver?"
Roberto swiped to the next picture, revealing the person behind the wheel. He stared for a moment, stunned, before his expression twisted in irritation.
"I should have known," he grumbled, passing the phone to Nathaniel. "It’s him—Jaxon."
Nathaniel’s frown deepened as he studied the photo. "So it was him. For a moment, I thought Zachary might have sent someone else to kill me."
Roberto shook his head. "He wouldn’t. He was waiting for you. Why would he try to kill you on the road? If that was his intention, he could have done that a long time ago. He wouldn’t have bothered capturing Kelvin and arranging a meeting."
He clenched his jaw, frustration evident. "I should have followed up on Jaxon the moment I heard he escaped from jail. I should have traced his movements."
Nathaniel remained troubled. Jaxon could have killed him easily, yet he didn’t even get out of the car to check whether Nathaniel survived the accident.
"That bastard was probably afraid of getting caught," Nathaniel muttered, gripping the phone tightly. "He did it to settle scores with me. And I’m starting to think he might be the one who set fire to Zara’s office."
"Highly possible," Roberto agreed. "I’ve already started digging into it. We’ll have answers soon. Whether or not he set the fire, he definitely caused your accident. And for that, I won’t let him walk away. He’ll pay for what he has done."
"I want to punish him too," Nathaniel muttered. "But first, I need to know if Zara is alright. Then I want updates on whether the doctors discovered anything about the drug or the antidote. And most importantly...I want to see my son."
"You’ll get every update," Roberto assured him. "But meeting your family isn’t possible right now. You’ll have to wait."
Wait.
Nathaniel exhaled heavily and walked toward the window. He stared at the moon glowing in the night sky. "Waiting is the hardest part," he murmured. "I just hope they are all safe."
Roberto wanted to offer comfort, but his phone buzzed again. He stepped outside to take the call.
Left alone, Nathaniel remained by the window, his thoughts drifting to the woman he loved. "Zara... I’m sorry. I couldn’t be there for you. Please...stay safe."
At the hospital...
Bree grew anxious with every passing minute. "I never should’ve left you alone," she whispered, cursing herself for leaving her friend with Riya. And now, Riya had vanished, while Zara had been discovered unconscious.
"Please be safe... or I’ll never forgive myself." Her lips trembled as she fought back her tears.
"Miss Bree." A deep voice behind her made her flinch. She turned, stiffening when she saw a police officer standing there.
"I’m the investigating officer," he said. "I have a few questions. Can we talk?"
Bree quickly blinked away her tears. "Yes, officer."
"How did the fire start? Do you know anything about it?"
Bree shook her head. "I’m not sure. I was with Zara in her office when the fire alarm went off. When I rushed out, there was smoke everywhere. It was terrifying. I immediately started calling for everyone to evacuate."
Her voice wavered. "I was so focused on helping others get out safely that I lost track of my friend. When I went back to look for her, I found her unconscious outside the building."
"Was anyone else in the office with her?" the officer asked.
Riya’s face popped into Bree’s mind. "Yes," she said quickly. "Riya was there."
"Riya?" The officer wrote the name down at once. "Who is she? An employee? A client?"
"Neither..." Bree’s jaw tightened, her resentment impossible to hide.
The officer raised an eyebrow.
"She is an enemy," Bree said bitterly. "A dangerous woman who can harm anyone. She even hurt her adoptive parents. She poisoned Mrs. Gracie Grant."
The officer scribbled the details, surprised—none of this had ever been ed before.
Bree spilled everything that had happened at once.
"When we cornered her, she finally admitted the name of the drug. Thank goodness, Mr. Liam Lawson quickly acted as soon as we told him the name of the drug. I hope Mrs. Grant has been saved."
She breathed before continuing, "But Riya still threatened us. She claimed she had powerful support and swore she would ruin us. We were just about to call the authorities when the fire alarm went off. I’m certain her boyfriend is behind all this."
"Do you know who her boyfriend is?" the officer asked.
"No, officer. I’ve never seen him."
"Thank you for the information. I’ll speak to you again later," he said before walking away.
Unbeknownst to them, someone had been lurking nearby, quietly observing and eavesdropping on their exchange. As soon as the officer left, the man slipped away as well and made a call, relaying everything he had heard.
"Boss." Roberto’s voice came from behind, sharp enough to almost make Nathaniel jump. The tone wasn’t just urgent—it carried excitement and disbelief.
Nathaniel turned, his pulse quickening with both hope and fear. "What happened? Any updates?"
Roberto nodded, eyes gleaming. "News from the hospital. The drug has been identified. And it’s all thanks to Madam Zara."
Zara?
Nathaniel froze for a moment. How had she managed to uncover it?
"Her friend Bree told everything to the officer," Roberto explained, recounting all the details he had received from his informant. "She forced Riya to confess."
A satisfied smile tugged at Nathaniel’s lips. What he hadn’t been able to achieve, Zara had accomplished.
"Mr. Liam was seen at the hospital speaking with the doctors. Madam Grace should be safe now."
Nathaniel exhaled in relief. "I want to speak to Liam."
Since he couldn’t go to Zara, he at least needed to hear from Liam.
Roberto paused a moment, then nodded. "Alright. I’ll arrange that."
Liam had just finished speaking with the medical team handling Gracie’s case. Now that the drug’s name was known, they had already begun searching for its antidote. Still, Liam couldn’t help wondering how Zara had managed to extract the information from Riya.
Driven by curiosity, he decided to check on her. But before he could leave the hospital, his phone rang, bringing news that made his blood run cold.
"What? A fire?" Liam felt as if the floor had dropped beneath him. A fire had broken out at Zara’s office. "How did that happen? Is she alright?"
The thought of Zara being hurt sent panic surging through him.
"She has been injured and taken to the hospital. The same one where Mrs. Grant is being treated."
Liam exhaled slowly. At least he was already there. "Thank you for letting me know. We’ll talk later."
He ended the call and rushed toward the emergency ward. As he reached the area, he saw Bree speaking with a police officer. He halted a short distance away, listening. Though he couldn’t catch every word, he gathered enough—Bree and Zara had cornered Riya and forced her to reveal the drug’s name.
’So that’s how they did it,’ he thought. ’Impressive, Zara. You are braver than I expected.’
Once the officer left, Liam stepped closer. "How is Zara?"
Bree turned, startled to see him. "Shay Walsh? I mean... Mr. Walsh? How did you know Zara was here?"
Liam rubbed the back of his neck, realizing Bree still hadn’t connected the dots. To her, Liam Lawson was the heir to the Lawson Group, the friend of Nathaniel and Zara. She had no idea that the same Liam was also the man she knew as Shay Walsh.
He cleared his throat. "I think it’s time I properly introduced myself. I’m Liam Lawson. You can call me Liam... or Shay... or Mr. Lawson—whichever works for you."
Bree’s jaw dropped. She blinked at him, speechless. "You are Liam Lawson? Nathaniel’s friend?"
He nodded.
"And it was you I spoke to earlier?"
Another nod.
"Oh my God!" She clapped a hand over her mouth. "I’m so sorry—I had no idea."
"There is nothing to apologize for. Hardly anyone knows about this," he assured her. "Anyway, I’ve already spoken to the doctors. Mrs. Grant is out of danger now."
He handed her his card. "Keep this. Call me if you need anything. I’ll get going."
He turned away. Before he could take two steps, his phone vibrated again. An unknown number flashed on the screen.
"Who is this?" he answered.
"It’s me."
Liam stopped dead, eyes widening. "Nathaniel?" he blurted out. "You stupid idiot—you are alive?"
"I have to be," Nathaniel retorted. "Otherwise, who would haunt you for the rest of your life?"
"You damn bastard—where the hell have you been hiding?"
"You can’t even imagine," Nathaniel said dryly. "I’ll explain everything. But first, I need you to do something."
"Anything," Liam replied instantly.
"It’s time for action." Nathaniel outlined his plan.
Liam’s lips stretched into a grin. "Brilliant. What do you need me to do?"
"Hit him hard," Nathaniel said.
