Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Name Change
The bus arrived at the station, and Lin Xiang, in high spirits, carried pastries and roast duck to the hospital.
Upon stepping into Lin Yun’s ward, she saw, besides Mrs. Lin and Cheng Jianping, a young stranger.
Seeing Lin Xiang come in, the stranger nodded slightly at her, as a greeting.
"This is my son." Cheng Jianping introduced to Lin Xiang, "He’s two years older than Lin Yun. You can call him Brother Cheng like Lin Yun does."
"Hello, Brother Cheng."
Lin Xiang greeted politely.
Yet not so obediently.
Cheng Jianping smiled without saying anything, but Cheng An frowned and glanced at Lin Xiang.
"Lin Yun, now that your family is all here, let’s discuss changing your surname."
Lin Xiang was taken aback, "Changing surname? What change?"
"He’s my father’s nephew, my brother. He should have the surname Cheng. It’s just correcting a mistake of over ten years by having him change back to the Cheng surname."
Cheng An spoke very calmly, as if discussing something trivial.
Lin Xiang couldn’t help but roll her eyes, "Back when my brother was abandoned, he was just three. If it weren’t for my dad picking him up, he wouldn’t have survived that freezing winter! Now you’ve found him and want him to change back? That’s unreasonable!"
Cheng An remained calm, "I’m not being unreasonable, just stating a fact. You raised him, which is undeniable, and we won’t deny your effort. But personally, I believe it’s better for Lin Yun to return to the Cheng surname."
"That’s just what you think; I don’t care what you think. I’ll only listen to what my brother says!"
Lin Yun remained expressionless throughout.
It was only when Lin Xiang’s gaze turned to him that he slowly spoke, "I don’t want to change my surname."
"He doesn’t acknowledge me, and I don’t wish to acknowledge him. We’ve already severed ties, so there’s naturally no need for me to share his surname."
"It doesn’t have to be his Cheng; it could be my dad’s Cheng, my own Cheng."
Lin Yun pressed his lips tightly, saying nothing.
"Alright, Anzi." Cheng Jianping interrupted Cheng An’s forcefulness, "Since Lin Yun doesn’t want to, let’s leave it for now."
"But Dad..."
"If he doesn’t have the surname Cheng, does that make him any less my nephew, less your brother?"
"Not at all."
"Let things take their course. If Ah Yun holds onto this feeling, it’s okay not to change back. If one day he changes his mind, then we can change it back."
Right now, the most important thing is to consider Lin Yun’s feelings.
After saying this, Cheng Jianping slowly stood up, "You all stay with Ah Yun; I have matters to attend to, so I’ll head back first."
Lin Xiang quickly placed her things on the table and chased after him, "Director, please wait a moment."
Cheng Jianping turned around, kindly looking at Lin Xiang, "Call me Uncle Cheng."
"Ah?"
"I’m Ah Yun’s uncle, you’re Ah Yun’s sister; it’s only right for you to call me Uncle Cheng."
"Uncle Cheng." Lin Xiang smoothly climbed up the relationship tree, calling it effortlessly.
These are connections!
When someone extends their leg to you, how can you not embrace it?
"Uncle Cheng, I remember you mentioned over the phone before that my brother’s mood isn’t good, possibly due to that family relation. Can I ask what exactly happened?"
"Since we arrived here, I’ve asked my brother, but he hasn’t said anything. Even if I wanted to comfort him, I wouldn’t know where to start."
Cheng Jianping replied, "Since Ah Yun doesn’t want to talk about it, let’s not bring it up for now. Have you received your admission notice?"
Lin Xiang shook her head honestly, "Not yet. Before coming to Beijing, I agreed with my class teacher that once the admission notice arrives, I’ll go back to get it."
Lin Xiang was a bit unsure of what the Chief ultimately had in mind.
He insisted on having them come to Beijing over the phone, but after arriving, he didn’t explain what happened.
If she weren’t of good disposition, with money and time, she might have broken down by now.
Cheng Jianping reminded Lin Xiang of a few things, but still did not mention that family issue.
Lin Xiang decided not to worry about it and simply inquired about the procedures for changing her registration.
"You’re planning to buy a residence registration?" Cheng Jianping was surprised.
This young girl isn’t even twenty yet, having such a strong opinion?
Well, without some capability, she couldn’t become a translator and secure export orders worth millions for the cotton spinning factory.
"Let Cheng An go with you, he has friends in the housing bureau who can help you deal with the registration procedures. As for your household registration, after receiving your admission notice, you can register at the school, or directly settle it with the residence registration after buying it."
"What about the house? Is it the same logic?"
Cheng Jianping raised an eyebrow, "You’ve got your eye on a house too?"
Lin Xiang smiled shyly, "You know, after securing that order for the cotton spinning factory, Director Chen gave me some bonus. Carrying such a large sum on me constantly makes me anxious, fearing my passbook might get lost. But it’s different with a house; having one in Beijing gives me more confidence."
Cheng Jianping smiled, "The procedures are roughly the same, have Cheng An accompany you tomorrow."
Lin Xiang couldn’t help but glance at Cheng An, wondering if his expressionless demeanor was innate.
Seeing her gaze on him, Cheng An nodded at her, "Have you set a time for tomorrow? Where exactly will it be?"
"Tomorrow at 10 AM, Huaqing University, first at the East Gate, then the South Gate."
Lin Xiang dared not mention the West Gate.
"Alright, see you at 10 AM tomorrow at the East Gate of Huaqing University."
After seeing Cheng Jianping and Cheng An leave, Lin Xiang returned to the ward.
"Mom, I bought a roast duck on my way back today, let’s eat it while it’s hot."
Mrs. Lin had smelled the roast duck for some time, swallowing her saliva who knows how many times, but with Cheng Jianping and his son there earlier, she didn’t dare eat it, lest they be seen as unsophisticated country bumpkins.
Lin Xiang wrapped a pancake and handed it to Mrs. Lin, who, with Lin Yun present, devoured it.
"Lin Yun, you’re injured and can’t eat greasy food. Once you’re better and discharged, Mom will buy it for you again. Xiang, roll me another, with extra meat! Make sure it has skin!"
Lin Xiang wrapped another with more meat for Mrs. Lin, tasted one herself, and didn’t eat any more.
Sitting by the bedside, she asked Lin Yun, "Brother, what do you think about changing your surname?"
Lin Yun glanced at her, "Are you this eager to oust me?"
"How could that be! You’re the only male in the Lin Family! We still need you to uphold the family name!"
"Speak properly!" Lin Yun glared at Lin Xiang, "Stop talking so sarcastically!"
