Chapter 310: Chapter 310: The Wounded Warriors
Lin Xiang stared at the ceiling, feeling as if her heart was a tangled mess.
It’s been over a year since she traveled back to the 1970s, and she has now achieved wealth freedom. Although her father passed away early, her mother genuinely loves her.
Compared to her previous life, where she lost her parents early and was utterly alone, this is much better.
The only thing she couldn’t let go of from her original timeline was the large flat she had just bought after working tirelessly for years; she hadn’t had the chance to enjoy it before ending up here in the book.
Other than that, not considering the convenience of modern life, Lin Xiang felt as though she had fully adapted to life in the 1970s.
Whether she could go back no longer seemed as important to her.
The crucial thing was whether she should go back.
In the dream, when the voice reminded her that she had earned enough goodwill points from the male lead to return to her own timeline, Lin Xiang’s first reaction was, what would happen to Mrs. Lin after she left, what about Cheng Jinyun, and the land and house she purchased...
A lot of reluctance arose.
She regretted that it was just a dream, yet was also grateful that it was just a dream.
"Phew..."
Lin Xiang let out a long breath of turbid air and slowly closed her eyes.
No matter what, it’s best to live the current life well first.
The next morning, when Lin Xiang got up, she found her eyes somewhat swollen.
She rubbed them with her hand, but there was no relief, so she decided to give up and went downstairs.
Cheng Jinyun was sitting in the living room reading a newspaper. Hearing Lin Xiang coming downstairs, he put down the newspaper and looked at her, "Breakfast is ready, after eating we’ll head to Qi State."
When Lin Xiang removed her hand from rubbing her eyes, Cheng Jinyun noticed her eyes were slightly swollen and red. "Why are your eyes red?"
"I don’t know, maybe I didn’t sleep well last night, it was too cold."
Cheng Jinyun got up, went to the kitchen, boiled two eggs, peeled them, and handed them to Lin Xiang, "I heard using eggs to roll over can reduce swelling, want to try?"
"Okay."
Lin Xiang closed her eyes and reached for the egg, but Cheng Jinyun directly placed the egg over her eyes.
His movements were very gentle, afraid of hurting Lin Xiang.
He was so close that Lin Xiang could even smell the scent of soap on his clothes.
His breath also sprayed onto her face.
It seemed... a bit too ambiguous.
Lin Xiang pushed Cheng Jinyun away, fanning her hands, "I seem to be overdressed today, it’s too warm."
"Warm?" Cheng Jinyun glanced at the foggy weather outside, remembering he’d been out earlier with frozen hands; warm wasn’t quite related in any way.
"I’m hungry, let’s have breakfast now, and after we’re done, head to Qi State early. After that, I have other matters to attend to."
"Alright."
Cheng Jinyun brought out the breakfast he had kept warm in the pot. Seeing him preparing two bowls, Lin Xiang asked, "You haven’t eaten?"
"Waiting for you."
"You don’t have to wait for me, you can eat first."
"It’s okay."
Cheng Jinyun handed Lin Xiang a big meat bun, "I went to the state-run restaurant this morning to buy it, knowing you like this."
"Thank you."
Lin Xiang took a bite of the big meat bun. The rich soup flowed into her mouth, but it was as if she couldn’t taste it, mechanically chewing the bun, her whole body in a dazed state.
Cheng Jinyun waved his hand in front of her face, "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing." Lin Xiang shook her head, finishing the meat bun in a few bites and downing the soy milk in a couple of swallows, wiping her mouth with a handkerchief, "I’m done, let’s go."
After saying this, she directly went to the yard.
Cheng Jinyun looked down at the half-eaten bun and half bowl of soy milk, then stuffed the rest of the bun into his mouth, chewed it a few times, swallowed it whole, and drank a sip of soy milk to wash it down. As fast as possible, he cleaned the dishes, took his gloves, and went outside.
Lin Xiang stood with her hands in her jacket pockets next to the bicycle, with a scarf around her neck that her aunt had given her yesterday.
It was a large scarf, just enough to cover her face.
Cheng Jinyun pushed the bike out of the yard, "Let’s go."
Lin Xiang sat in the back seat, still keeping her hands in her pockets.
"Hold onto my waist; once we leave the alley, there’s a rough section of the road, uneven with ups and downs. If you don’t hold onto something, you might fall off easily."
"No need, I can handle it."
Cheng Jinyun didn’t know why Lin Xiang suddenly acted so stubbornly; seeing she was unwilling, he didn’t insist and let her sit as she wished.
When they reached the territory of Qi State, there was a section of the road covered with little stones. Cheng Jinyun was afraid Lin Xiang would fall off, so he slowed down the bike as much as possible.
Fortunately, the journey went smoothly and they arrived at the farm without incident.
It was called a farm, but aside from pig pens, there were basically no fences or anything else. Thankfully, it was remote, otherwise the residents around might grow something there.
Several people were already waiting, sitting together in a circle, chatting about something. As Lin Xiang approached, she could hear their cheerful banter.
"Ah Yun is here."
Someone shouted, and the others immediately stood up.
Their backs were straight, standing as firm as pines.
If one ignored their empty sleeves or pant legs.
"Brother, they..."
Cheng Jinyun took two steps forward, saluted the few of them first, and then said to Lin Xiang, "These are my comrades. They got injured during missions, ending up like this, having to demobilize."
"When you mentioned needing help for the farm, they were the first ones I thought of. I also discussed it with Uncle yesterday; it’s completely feasible."
Demobilization comes with settlement fees and casualty subsidies, adding up to quite a bit, but not too much, barely enough to sustain for decades.
But they are not young, many of them already established families and have to support them, so the money seems not quite sufficient.
And more importantly, when accustomed to being busy, sudden idle time is the scariest, when a person becomes idle, the mind gets chaotic.
They got injured, becoming disabled. If they don’t find something to do, they may easily develop problems over time.
"But..."
Lin Xiang frowned, "My farm is currently just a concept, with nothing at all right now, isn’t it a bit of a waste of talent?"
"As long as you don’t mind them, all your concerns can be addressed."
"How could I possibly mind them!" Lin Xiang’s voice suddenly raised, "They’re soldiers, they got injured for Hua Country and for its people. Their scars are their medals; I only have respect for them, how could I mind?"
Such a brief statement brought tears to the eyes of several warriors who possessed iron wills.
It feels wonderful to not be disliked.
"Shall we discuss the farming matters next?"
