Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Princely Heir Is a Woman 15
"Ah Zhen, it’s been a month since Fifth Sister left. Have there been any letters?" Ning Yumei suddenly asked, setting the ginseng tea she was holding back onto the stone table, a few lines of worry creeping onto her forehead.
In the deep bamboo grove, the branches and leaves gently swayed. It was supposed to be a time of leisure and pleasure, yet Ning Yumei’s heart was unsettled.
Since Ning Yumei’s health had improved significantly, it was no problem for her to walk around by herself, and Ah Chen rarely had time to sit with her. She cared deeply about these sisters of the Commissioner, ensuring they were all healthy and well-cared for before she could focus on other matters.
"From the Capital City to Qingzhou, a month should be enough for a round trip." The more she thought about it, the more anxious Ning Yumei became, gripping her teacup tightly, her whole body tense. Could something have gone wrong? The journey is long, and anything could happen. It’s not as peaceful outside as around the Capital City, and there could really be mountain bandits or something.
"Second Sister, don’t worry. Fifth Sister is fine," Ah Chen said. "There wasn’t time to send a letter, but indeed some things happened. However, my people have been ing their safety regularly."
When it concerned the safety of Ning Yuxue and her husband, she couldn’t be careless.
Her people ed every three days.
Ning Yuxue hadn’t sent a letter back indeed because something happened, but they were unharmed. Something major happened over there in Qingzhou. She guessed that their letter should be arriving soon, just hadn’t had time before.
Ning Yumei trusted Ah Chen, and hearing her say so, her tense heart instantly calmed down.
She thought of herself again. By next year, she should be able to go out and see the world. Actually, the Prince Ning Mansion is quite good, much better than before she was married. Even if she never steps out and stays here all her life, it would be fine.
But she longed for the world outside. Perhaps life had been too stable, making her desire more.
With each letter from her Seventh Sister, her curiosity about the outside world grew. She didn’t even want to just watch the scenery from a carriage; she wanted to ride a horse and see the flowers.
"I heard you went to see the horses at the estate earlier, Second Sister?" Ah Chen suddenly said. "Once you’re in better shape and able to handle horse riding, I’ll find you a teacher to learn how to ride. Then when you’re tired of sitting in the carriage during outings, you can ride a horse for fun."
Ning Yumei’s eyes flashed with anticipation and soon became a little embarrassed as she touched her flushed face. Was she that obvious? Even the busy Ah Chen noticed it.
But she didn’t refuse, emphasizing, "While I yearn for the outside, it’s not just for fun. I can also help you with some things."
"That would be great. I’ve always hoped you could help," Ah Chen said. "If you feel there are no other discomforts with your body, you could help keep an eye on some shops in the Capital City right now. I’m handling everything alone, and it’s really a bit overwhelming, I can’t manage all of it."
Ning Yumei knew how busy Ah Chen was. Aside from nights at the mansion, she was often outside. Yet, no matter how busy, Ah Chen asked after Ning Yumei’s well-being each day.
Really quite worrisome.
"Okay," she said.
That afternoon, Ah Chen received a letter from Ning Yuxue.
The letter mentioned that the two were attacked on the road. The couple lamented that fortunately, there were the twenty guards Ah Chen had sent with them; otherwise, they might not have survived the bandit attack. The letter briefly praised the twenty guards, noting that the bandit encounter was related to affairs in Qingzhou, involving former Magistrate there.
This was going to blow up.
By the time her letter arrives, the matter would likely be settling down.
Once it was confirmed that Ning Yuxue and her husband were safe, Ah Chen didn’t pay it much further attention. As for the situation in Qingzhou, naturally, the new Magistrate Jian Jikang and the one at the Imperial Palace would handle it, so she didn’t arrange for anyone to investigate further.
After informing Ning Yumei of Ning Yuxue’s message, Ah Chen returned to her work.
A couple of days later, the former Magistrate of Qingzhou was exposed for concealing iron and gold mines and even assassinating Court officials, causing an uproar in the Court. Besides, there were various other matters both large and small over there in Qingzhou. Needless to say, a whole series of issues were coming to light, and it would not end quickly.
Who knows how many heads would roll.
None of this concerned Ah Chen much. She sat in a carriage on her way to visit Fourth Sister Ning Yutong, and they would arrive soon.
"Young Master, we’ve arrived at Weian Earl Mansion," Ying Fang’s voice rang out.
Ah Chen stepped out of the carriage, raising her eyes to glance at the sign for Weian Earl Mansion. Her eyebrow arched slightly, as if smiling, with a look of curiosity, much like a young lord who had never experienced hardship before and was intrigued by something new.
Entirely harmless and quite confusing to people.
Ying Fang caught a glimpse of this smile by chance, thinking to himself that Fourth Brother-in-law might be doomed.
The people at Weian Earl Mansion were surprised to see it was a carriage from Prince Ning Mansion. Ah Chen was well-known in the Capital City. The doorkeeper even shivered a bit, quickly recalling whether their young master had done anything wrong to their mistress.
Luckily, he hadn’t.
Prince Ning wasn’t heartless toward all brothers-in-law. As long as they didn’t mistreat his sisters or do anything outrageous, they could be fine. Weren’t there two who were doing well? Especially the Hanlin Academy Editor, even if he insisted on having a son, Prince Ning didn’t criticize but even helped get work to build the child’s dowry.
The young master and mistress might not be passionately in love, but they respected each other like guests.
Hmm, should be fine.
Today, Prince Ning had probably come to visit his sister.
With this thought, realizing Ah Chen was truly here to visit Ning Yutong, the doorkeeper warmly and obsequiously invited her in.
Ah Chen made no secret of her visit. As soon as she entered, word of her visit to Weian Earl Mansion quickly spread. A certain elegant teahouse set up a betting pool; given that the previous two brothers-in-law at Prince Ning Mansion got along fine with Prince Ning, they weren’t betting on when this young master of Weian Earl Mansion would meet his end.
They were betting whether this fourth brother-in-law of Prince Ning Mansion would perish or continue living well.
This made it hard to guess, since who knows if he’d done anything shady in private?
"Certainly not, I know Zhou Yuanjia well. We’ve had drinks together a few times, and he doesn’t even go to flower houses, let alone have any odd habits. He normally trains in the military camp, everything is watched by so many people, what strange habits could he have? Moreover, I’ve heard he hasn’t even had any chambermaids. So, I bet Zhou Yuanjia will be just fine."
"Then I’ll also bet there’s nothing going on with Zhou Yuanjia!"
"I know Zhou Yuanjia, I bet he’ll be fine."
"Fortune favors the bold. Everyone thinks Zhou Yuanjia is fine, so I’ll bet he’s got something going on. If I lose, it’s not much, but if I win, that’s a profit, hehe."
"Brother, you’re not the only one thinking like that. I’m with you on that, haha."
