Chapter 440: Moving the Line
After a few minutes of laser fire it died down and Sergeant K was able to move out from behind cover. Just to see as a group of demons were running away going towards the portal. At the back was the gold masked demon who was forming a golden translucent energy shield with her hand as she backed up.
THUD!
A heavy landing caught not only her attention but the other infantry soldiers that suddenly appeared. They looked over to see the purple mask and armored figure with the massive halberd. She was one of the sins, the one that Major Jace had fought before.
Just as she looked like she was ready to jump at them. She suddenly spun around with her halberd but it looked like a beam of blue hit her and she flew right through the portal. She and the others made their way to the edge of the enchantment and could see Major Jace walking towards the portal as he moved a weapon to his back.
—------------------------
Some time earlier.
Jace landed just outside of the cave and walked forward. His armor’s yellow shielding flared momentarily as multiple lasers and bolts of plasma hit his armor. He could see the damage from the armored line that had advanced past enemy lines.
He could also see that Sloth and Greed were gone. But there were no clear signs of where they went aside from some minor destruction. They were clearly trying to avoid him. Because they went right behind enemy lines instead of holding a position to help their comrades.
He walked forward while his rotary gun began spinning up. The Infantry he walked up behind ducked behind cover before looking at the source of the noise.
"Major Jace!" A voice called out and he looked over to see Ulin.
"Ulin, good timing. I heard Sergeant K is the reason for our line being in disarray." He ignored the laser bolts that were bouncing off him and only moved slightly because the plasma bolts were annoying.
"She... is. I apologize sir. Once we get back to the station she will be reprimanded and be put into mandatory training." Ulin assured him from her crouched position. She had her bow and a few other pieces of specialized gear on her. It was giving Jace an idea.
"Indeed you will, take your squad and another. Go stealth and sneak behind enemy lines. Wait until the heavy armor column needs assistance before you expose yourself. I will give you a two minute headstart before I start moving the line." Jace ordered as he fired the rotary machine gun.
BWOOOM!
A line of bullets were fired out that turned enemy demons and cover into bits and pieces before he stopped and stepped forward to the line that the soldiers had hastily created with sandbags.
He raised a hand to catch his soldier’s attention. "Those not with preexisting orders will assist me in pushing forward the line. Those that are good shots are shooters. Those that are not will keep ammunition ready for them to reload. Those that can will be moving cover. Understood?!" Jace ordered and heard a chant as confirmation.
"’Yes sir!""
Every few seconds he would fire another line of bullets with his rotary machine gun that would hum loudly before disintegrating anything in his path. While he did this the soldiers, aside from Ulin’s group which set off immediately, began grouping in groups of five. With two of them shooting, two of them holding up a barrier or other form of defense, then the last one stayed back with packs full of ammunition ready to hand them out.
As soon as time was up he moved forward. His rotary heavy machine gun hummed loudly as he walked through the sandy canyon which was littered with corpses and discarded weapons. Every few seconds he had to stop to let the barrels of his gun cool while he walked up to the demons who were quickly backpedaling.
A group of armored demons suddenly ran forward out of cover. Going right towards Jace. Jace turned his rotary gun on them but had to pull it back as one of his overzealous soldiers with a shield jumped in the path and tried to block them.
Jace pulled the shield soldier out of the way and launched his foot forward kicking the armored demon back into a hastily constructed fort. The next armored demon in line screeched and Jace felt a slight pressure pushing him back. But the hand that held the shield soldier dropped them and then threw his knife that materialized in his hand. The third and forth armored demon did not get a chance to close the distance before laser and gun fire filled the air and they fell to the ground dead.
"Stay out of my way! I do not need unnecessary protection." Jace reminded them as he continued marching forward. He could see in the distance as Captain Tyler’s mech engaged a bigger red mech. While at this point his ’line’ was mostly cleaning up as there were very few demons left they were mostly going around double tapping downed enemies to make sure they were dead.
As they arrived at the canyon wall they began scaling the wall while most of the line of soldiers moved to some slopes that led to the top of the wall. Jace just jumped up to grab a handhold then repeated the action multiple times as he was one handing it. In his other hand was the rotary machine gun.
As he arrived at the top of the wall it was in time to see the Sloth jumping through the air towards a hastily constructed fort made out of that red stuff. He could see Ulin and the stealth operatives she had gathered.
Jace dropped his rotary machine gun for the moment and pulled his railgun off his back and slotted in one of the shells into the chamber before closing it. Then he channeled electricity into the weapon and it hummed quietly as the meter on the side of the gun lit up blue and started to get darker.
Then he let loose the shell, firing it at Sloth who landed on the side of the constructed fort.
BOOOM!!
The sand in the area was tossed away as the shockwave originated from him. Then the shell with a line of blue went straight at Sloth who barely managed to use her halberd to block the attack before being pushed back through the air and into the giant red portal. He had already listened in on Solisa’s assessment after sending a locator beacon through the portal.
Hot air rushed out the sides of the railgun as Jace put it back on his back and crouched down to pick up his heavy machine gun. "Ulin, organize the line." He looked over to see Velwrench kicking off the roof of a heavily damaged tank and stepping out in his armor with his combat hammer in hand. "Specialist Velwrench, see if you can make us some barriers to hold them back if this turns into a prolonged battle. Captain Tyler, what is your status?"
There were additional explosions to the side of the portal followed by Tyler’s mech walking over and tossing the red mech’s head through the portal. "It is a single sided portal. We only have to set up on this side and all of the enemy mechs have already been disabled or destroyed. Permission to set up artillery positions for available mechs?"
"Granted, start laying down fire immediately. We need to keep them suppressed, keep in mind these are the aggressors and we are not going to hit friendlies by taking them out." Jace ordered as he got close enough to get a look through the portal.
He looked through the portal and nodded his head, "Captain Solisa, launch four firestorm missiles through the portal to the other world. Aim for the structures in the distance." Jace ordered.
"Unable to, targeting beyond the portal is not possible at this time. I am already coming up with ways around what is preventing me from doing so." Solisa informed him.
Jace got close enough to the portal to see the tide of demons running toward them as his unit hastily set up gun positions and were using armored vehicles to lay down fire to keep them back. Jace stopped next to a spot where some armored soldiers were tossing sandbags in a wall formation. He set his rotary heavy machine gun against it before stepping over it and leaving the heavy machine gun behind. It had already run out of ammunition, it was time to switch weapons.
He pulled his Wildfire Assault rifle off his back and aimed through the portal. Aiming toward a few of the more well armored demons that were trying to sprint through the shield. After hitting one in a knee joint, he followed it up with a bullet through their head going from their unarmored neck. Then he fired at a wall of shields that was slowly moving forward. Then he aimed down and bounced the bullets off the ground of the other world and through their ankles causing them to fall down.
But before he got a chance to finish them off his attention was grabbed by a purple armored figure that was running across the battlefield. Coming right toward him. Jace grinned as he jumped forward, crossing through the portal and feeling a burning sensation on his skin that he ignored.
