Steel, Guns, and the Industrial Party in Another World-Chapter 656: The Pursuit
Chapter 656: The Pursuit

“What’s wrong with you now?”
Paul saw Denson’s conflicted expression.
“Uh, it’s nothing. Lord Grayman, how will you deal with me?”
Paul answered, “Hmph. I can give you a chance. After all, someone with magical abilities can be considered a special talent in some respects.”
“Thank you! Uh…”
Denson was so excited that he forgot he was tied up. He tried to stand up at once, only to be painfully constricted by the ropes.
“You may not know this, but I am also from Ordo. If it weren’t for my identity as a spellcaster, I would not have gone to a distant foreign land to work!”
“Calm down! Mr. Denson, even so, you will be under close observation until you have proven your loyalty.”
“I will certainly not disappoint you! Lord Grayman!”
“Listen, I will call my subordinates in a moment. You will tell them about the Arcane Society, but…” Paul warned him sternly, “do not mention a single word about things you shouldn’t!”
“I understand! Lord Grayman!” Denson knew that Count Grayman did not want anyone to know about the things inside his head.
“Men, bring Cecil and Ladi in.”
The two, who had been waiting outside, quickly answered the summons.
“What? This wizard wants to pledge allegiance to you?”
After hearing Paul’s explanation, they were both astonished.
Paul ordered, “Untie him first!”
With Ladi present, he was not afraid of this fellow named Denson trying any tricks.
He had Denson repeat what he had just said.
“The Arcane Society… they actually have such a grand plan?”
Ladi was deeply shocked. When she was in Horn Bay, the Arcane Society had invited her to join, but she had felt the organization’s views were too radical and declined.
She had never imagined they were secretly plotting such things behind the scenes.
“It sounds like the plot of a novel!”
Cecil stroked his chin, a look of disbelief on his face.
“You trust him just like that? Why would he pledge allegiance to you for no reason and betray his former companions.”
“It’s not something I can explain in a sentence or two!” Paul decided not to explain it. “Ladi can prove his words are true, can’t she?”
The witch held a glowing crystal ball and nodded. “There is a ninety-nine percent probability that it is true.”
Cecil inquired, “Should we expose their conspiracy to the world?”
Paul shook his head. “I’m worried it will provoke their frenzied retaliation. The thought of a large group of wizards pouring into Northwest Bay to cause destruction gives me a headache.”
He had another concern: the Church would definitely use the Arcane Society’s conspiracy to strengthen its own presence and greatly increase its influence.
“My lords, let’s not talk about distant matters for now. I suggest you first focus on the Arcane Society members who have infiltrated Alda!”
Denson solemnly advised, “That is, my former companions. Capture them, control them, or simply destroy them.”
“Denson is right!” Although Paul was surprised at how readily he sold out his comrades, allowing several uncontrolled spellcasters to operate under his nose was indeed not a good thing.
Ladi looked at Denson. “What is their strength?”
Denson said, “They are all spellcasters proficient in combat, especially fire magic. In particular, a red-haired female wizard named Mariana is exceptionally powerful!”
“If they are staying in a tavern, it will be very tricky if they rely on the building to put up a desperate fight. Therefore, I suggest, Lord Grayman, that you could bring in a dozen cannons and blast them and the building to smithereens!”
“That won’t do! There are other people inside, and the buildings there are dense. Heaven knows where the cannonballs might land.”
Paul rejected the idea without a second thought. He looked at Denson.
“Mr. Wizard, now is your chance to prove your loyalty!”
Denson’s eyes widened, and he pointed a finger at his own nose. “Me?”
“Yes, you find a way to lure them out to a deserted place! We will catch them there.”
—
“Denson has been out shopping for quite a while!”
Nathan said with some worry, “I have a bad feeling.”
He and Edward were playing cards out of boredom, while Mariana was meditating in her own room next door.
As if to confirm his bad feeling, the sound of footsteps climbing the stairs echoed, thump, thump, thump.
Bang! The door opened, and Denson burst in.
“My heavens, old man! What happened to you?”
Nathan looked at the bruised and swollen Denson, completely shocked.
“Rotten luck, I got into a fight with a group of ruffians!”
Edward teased, “This must have been an unforgettable shopping trip.”
“Uh… everyone?” Denson was a little awkward, like a child who had done something wrong. “We have to leave here quickly.”
“Why?”
“I couldn’t resist using a little trick to get back at them, so…”
Nathan covered his forehead. “Damn it! You used magic on the street?”
“Stop talking!” Denson yelled. “Hurry up and pack, and call for Lady Mariana.”
Half an hour later, a carriage left the tavern’s gate and headed out of Lakeheart Town.
On the road outside the town, Nathan said with no small amount of regret, “To be honest, I quite like this place. I will definitely miss Alda.”
Edward said curiously, “It’s rare to see you express such feelings.”
“I can’t quite explain it either,” Nathan said, shaking his head. “It’s as if my soul resonated with this land. It’s a very strange feeling.”
As the two were talking, the sound of dense hoofbeats came from behind.
They looked back and saw a large company of knights—about twenty or so—galloping along the road they had just traveled.
“Are they looking for us?”
“I don’t think a group of ruffians could create such a scene.”
“What if the ruffians told the Church or the lord about Denson’s ‘trick’?”
“In any case, let’s pull over. But of course, be prepared for a fight.”
They parked the carriage by the side of the road.
The knights arrived in an instant, surrounding the carriage.
Nathan secretly thought this was bad. These men, dressed in uniform attire, were targeting their group.
Especially… with that fellow Paul Grayman in the middle.
“Haha, we meet again, great Count Grayman! It was such a shame I couldn’t perform magic for you last time. Have you come this time to make up for that regret?”
Nathan stood on the ground, bowing to Paul with an exaggerated motion.
A clattering sound arose. Denson noticed that all the knights had taken a long, tube-shaped object with a wooden stock from their mounts and were pointing it at them.
What did this mean? Was it some kind of weapon?
Paul sat on his mount, far away from him.
He said expressionlessly, “There are some matters I must ask you to cooperate with in an investigation.”
Hearing the other party say this, Nathan knew this was bad. This count must have sensed something. That idiot Denson!
He still believed that the current situation was caused by Denson accidentally using magic during his fight with the ruffians.
“That’s a pity, Lord Count. We are all in a hurry.”
The fawning expression from before vanished, and Nathan’s face was covered with a layer of coldness.
