Liang Youzhen looked at his daughter with an expression of guidance. He wasn't a conservative father nor a carefree one, so he hoped his daughter's marriage would be freely chosen by her, but at the same time, he didn't want her future husband to be a bad man. So he was conflicted and contradictory, which might be a major concern for many parents nowadays.
Liang Yuwei was strikingly beautiful and graceful, a beauty since childhood, and had admirers chasing her non-stop since junior high school. Even now, she had countless suitors from wealthy families or children of high-ranking officials who would probably line up forever if needed.
But what's the use of that? What he valued wasn't wealth or status; he valued character and integrity. Those young men pursuing her might have wealthy families and decent social statuses, but were often frivolous and unreliable. He certainly wouldn't want his daughter to marry such a person.
Therefore, even though he didn't express it, he was worried about his daughter's marriage internally. Seeing her classmates and friends who graduated with her having kids already attending kindergarten, while his daughter hadn't even started a relationship, it somewhat distressed him.
Of course, that was secondary. Mainly, he thought Hao Jian was a nice guy. Sitting vigilantly beside the bed all night showed quite a lot, and Hao Jian's bravery in subduing a hospital troublemaker single-handedly spoke volumes. Plus, it seemed his daughter might have some feelings for him.
Perhaps Liang Yuwei hadn't realized it herself, but he had lived decades longer than her and was her father, surely he understood her subtle thoughts and feelings. From the moment she walked in, her gaze and subtle actions revealed a lot.
He felt his daughter was interested in this young man, but having never been in a relationship, she might be unsure what to do with love, feeling bewildered and confused.
So he spoke like that, hoping his daughter would be bold and actively pursue her happiness.
He wasn't a parent with feudal ideas. What's wrong with girls dating a few times? Encountering someone you like more often won't hurt; it teaches them how to proceed properly.
So when he heard Yuwei saying she wanted to focus on work before contemplating relationships and marriage, his gaze slightly disclosed a hint of displeasure.
He then said: "Your mother passed away early and couldn't care for you, that's partly my responsibility. I've dreamed several times of her appearing, expressing hope for you to settle your marital matters soon, find a good family, and she can have a granddaughter to hold. I'm not pressuring you into marriage, but you're quite grown-up now; even if not planning to marry, having a boyfriend wouldn't hurt, right? Must you wait to be older for arranged meetings?"
Pausing briefly, he added: "I know you dislike arranged meetings. Look at Auntie Zhang's daughter next door, who's about your age, ended up needing to arrange meetings, so I say even though you're not old, it's wise to think about this!"
Immediately, Liang Youzhen began speaking at length to Liang Yuwei, who felt irked. Yet, she felt too embarrassed to ignore or abruptly leave, especially with her father being ill now.
Then suddenly, Liang Youzhen shifted his focus to Hao Jian, saying: "If you have no opinions, I think this young man seems nice, you could consider him."
Following her father's gaze, Yuwei looked at Hao Jian resting deeply at the bed's edge, thinking of her father's words, not knowing what to say.
Hao Jian! He's nice! You could consider him! Damn it! Had those words not come from her father, she might have scolded that person furiously—too bad they did come from her father, leaving her without rebuttal.
Merely gazing at Hao Jian, a strange, nameless anger surged in her mind. Most annoying was when family elders or her father brought up marriage, and to her surprise, this time her father was mentioning it due to him, urging her to consider him.
She looked at Liang Youzhen and said: "Okay, Dad, I'll heed your advice and talk well with him!"
Liang Youzhen silently chuckled, surprised his daughter had been enlightened by his words.
Then, moving her gaze to Hao Jian, Yuwei's previous sympathy and guilt faded quickly. She suddenly approached Hao Jian's sleeping form, her anger uncontrollable despite his deep slumber. Staring down at him, she reached out and delivered a forceful slap.
Actually, Hao Jian had already awakened; his perception was highly attuned making him sensitive, waking as Yuwei came through the door, but pretending to sleep to observe her words and feelings about him.
When Liang Youzhen mentioned Yuwei considering him, inwardly he smiled, yet outwardly he restrained himself from laughing, feigning deep sleep instead.
However, while the conversation was steady, Yuwei unexpectedly walked over, delivering a hard slap on his back entirely unforeseen. Startled, Hao Jian jumped up in shock.
The slap from Yuwei indeed hurt; though covered by clothing, he sensed the five distinct red palm prints behind him.
That sharp pain, it stung noticeably. Yet before reacting, Yuwei suddenly seized his collar, dragging him outside.
"Come with me, I have something to discuss!" Yuwei commanded with authority to Hao Jian.
Without granting Hao Jian a chance to speak, she dragged him outside, shutting the room door—briefly separating them from the world.
Observing his daughter's actions, Liang Youzhen sighed silently. How inappropriate for a girl to treat a boy with such attitude and actions. Though Yuwei appeared gentle, prolonged interaction revealed no gentleness, hiding a strong-willed spirit beneath.
Seeing the closed door, he sighed realizing, despite knowing his daughter well, she ought to be more tender toward men. Initially, letting her join the police wasn't wise—mixing daily with burly men made altering her demeanor challenging.
It was partly his fault, devoid of motherly influence growing up with a man like him, her personality developed thusly—his failure to guide her properly caused this.
Thinking along these lines, Liang Youzhen imagined had her mother lived, she'd surely be a lady.
Meanwhile, inside the quiet room, outside the door lay another world.
Once outside the ward, Yuwei dragged Hao Jian far away, ensuring her father didn't hear—only stopping after around fifty meters, abruptly pressing Hao Jian against the wall.
With one hand against the wall beside Hao Jian's head, an evident "wall slam" posture emerged. Oblivious to this, she looked at Hao Jian sternly.
Suddenly speaking sharply: "Speak, what did you say to my father in my absence that moved him like this? Did you use some deceitful strategy?"
Hao Jian looked helplessly, pondering what he could have done—awake when her father slept, sleeping as he awoke, unable to converse—clear he did nothing.
Yet these thoughts remained internal, some words could be thought but not spoken, lest he seek death.
Staring at Yuwei, he smirked saying: "What's the matter? Your dad suggested you consider being my girlfriend, why do you now speak differently?"
Hearing this, Yuwei's expression revealed everything—she entirely assumed Hao Jian had slept through events, unaware he heard the conversation awake.
Realizing he pretended sleep, she never expected, raising her hand prepared to strike again. This time Hao Jian was ready, seizing her hand as it moved.
"Let go!" Yuwei commanded loudly.
Hao Jian smiled saying: "No wonder you've never dated! This explosive temper, who could endure? Consider yourself lucky not married; anyone marrying you would face endless misfortunes."
"Yet…" pausing slightly, he continued, "seeing as your dad suggested considering me, clearly you don't need consideration anymore. Someone with your demeanor would find no suitor, so you might as well stick with me. I'm willing to endure misfortune for you, nothing for you to object!"
