Chapter 30: Ch 30: Miss Anabella
Silence descended around the table as we approached Miss Anabella. Every conversation stopped. Everyone waited for blood again.
"-and then... is something wrong? You all are looking behind me. Is there... someone around?"
Miss Anabella asked before she turned around.
"Oh my-! Mister Black? What a shock to see you here. Did you... seek me out because you wanted to meet me? Of course I will give you my time. Gentlemen, please excuse me for a minute while I talk to Mister Black."
She told the people she was talking to before she turned toward us.
"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Anabella. I have heard a lot about you and your charity from my fiance and decided I wanted to meet you. But I think you did not notice my presence."
I kept my voice pleasant and modest. I did not make it loud enough to make it seem like I was causing a scene, but it was not low enough to make it seem like I was trying to hide from the others either.
Damian, the excellent actor he was, interjected himself in that conversation at the right time.
"Ah, darling, it might be my fault that this happened. I should have introduced you to Miss Anabella myself. Miss Anabella, she is Jenna Lorance, my fiance. Darling, this is Miss Anabella, the head of Miss Anabella’s charity."
"F-Fiance...?"
Anabella’s face paled as she asked us this. Her eyes shook as she looked from me to Damian and back to me.
Her shock rippled across the room like gunfire — everyone felt and they strained their ears to hear what we were talking about.
"M-Mister Damian, is this some kind of joke? Didn’t you say you were not interested in getting married? And why to someone like her...?"
Miss Anabella asked, her face faltering. It seemed as if she was not able to control her emotions anymore.
The polite mask cracked - jealousy bled through her voice.
She looked pitiful, but unfortunately, it was not enough to make me take pity on her. Not after everything that had happened. Not after what she helped build.
Anger simmered in Miss Anabella’s eyes toward me and I finally felt satisfied. My plan was working.
After coming back home from the orphanage, I had done a little more digging (with Damian’s help) and found out a few shocking truths that I felt foolish enough to not have looked into before.
For Rose to do what she did to me, she needed a lot of funds. And she clearly was not taking them all from the main company because I would have known about it if she did.
So she had turned toward the illegal side to get these funds and one of the places she employed for this was Anabella’s charity. This place had a clean reputation and was beloved among the masses.
To bring Rose down, I needed to tear down her kingdom of support. But it was not an easy thing to do for me.
So the solution? It was simple—I just needed to make the empire collapse itself. And first, I needed to anger Miss Anabella for her to come after me and leave herself full of openings.
There were some public videos of Miss Anabella available and I decided to check them, only to notice that she was one of the people who looked at Damian with stars in her eyes.
So I had an idea about how to provoke her. And it turned out to be the right method.
The quickest way to destroy someone who hides behind virtue is to threaten what they secretly desire.
"Miss Anabella, you seem shocked? Are you not happy that we were able to find love? Would you give our union your blessing?"
I asked, taking a step toward the female. Anabella looked conflicted, not knowing whether she should push me back or take a step back herself.
Her pride wanted to shove me away — her image forced her to stay still.
"I... need some time. Of course, you both have my... blessing... but for now, I need to think about the children... yeah, the children I want to help out."
She tried to take a step but almost lost her balance. The excuse was flimsy — panic had stolen her composure.
I quickly headed toward her and grabbed her arm before she could fall. I made sure to lean close to her so that I could whisper the next part to her.
"Ah, those children, right? You sure pretend to care a lot about your merchandise. I wonder what the world would say about that. I don’t have a reputation to carry and Damian can always find another person to take my place, calling me a fake. But I wonder what would happen to you if the truth behind your ’charity’ were to come out."
Her body froze under my hand — every word hit her like a blade to the throat.
"N-No-! I mean, please excuse me. I need to go."
The female told me as she pushed past me and headed out toward the restroom. Everyone gave me a look, wanting to know what I did to the host to make her react like that.
Their curiosity sparked into ravenous delight — they smelled scandal.
These ers looked ready to pounce on me, but I was not the one they needed to go after.
Adapting an innocent face was easy enough and I decided to give Damian an innocent look.
"Oh my-! It looks like Miss Anabella really needed to use the restroom. Should I buy some stomach medicine for her?"
I asked Damian, noticing how the ers took notice of my conversation. They would likely paint me as a little clueless from here on, which served me just right.
If they think that I am not a threat, then they would be much less inclined to paint me as a villainess.
Damian came toward me and wrapped himself around me to shield me away from cameras. His voice sounded close to my ear, making me shiver.
"We are done with what we came here to do. Should we head back now?"
Damian asked me and I considered our next course of action.
