The Game of a Legendary Genius Dark Mage-Chapter 287

4.
Heptarion wasn't particularly well-known or popular.
However, the Caliber Tower located here was a different story.
Of course, it wasn’t more famous or popular than other magic towers either.
But within Heptarion, it was undoubtedly the most popular place.
After all, it was one of the few towers in the Eternal World’s East Asia server that crafted magic weapons.
The merchants from Caliber Tower were constantly busy traveling to other cities to sell goods.
Thanks to that, Caliber Tower’s reputation could grow even without people visiting Heptarion directly.
For such reasons, Caliber Tower had become famous.
Yet, the mages of the tower were all visibly irritated.
Especially Serena Bell Lumiere, who often showed her frustration.
“What the hell gives him the right to tell us to root out dark mages?!”
Serena spoke loudly, as if she genuinely couldn't comprehend the situation.
However, no one tried to stop her.
Her expressions were intense, but.
There were plenty of mages who agreed with her sentiment.
The only one looking miserable was the tower disciple tasked with delivering the message.
“What, are we supposed to take responsibility if all our orders get canceled because of this crap?!”
“Th-That’s not it. It’s, uh, it’s a recommendation from the Sword Saint.”
“I don’t care if it’s a recommendation or a damn order. Does he even know how backed up we are? We're always swamped! Right?!”
All these words were directed toward none other than the Sword Saint.
Of course, he couldn't hear any of it.
Still, Serena’s anger was justified.
Caliber Tower was so busy that they barely had time to breathe.
Not just the Kingdom of Rieskan, but other kingdoms and empires — even magic towers and knight orders — flooded Caliber Tower with orders.
How could they possibly fulfill all those requests overnight?
Especially considering this was one of the few towers in the Kingdom of Rieskan.
And now they wanted them to root out dark mages on top of everything?
Was that a joke?
“P-Please, calm down, Chief Mage Serena.”
“How the hell am I supposed to calm down? Isn't the Tower Master just going to brush it off again???”
“Y-Yes......”
The disciple guiding her could only lower his head miserably.
Serena let out a deep sigh and shook her head.
“Haaa, well, it’s not your fault. It's our indecisive Tower Master’s fault.”
“Y-Yes... The Tower Master also... told us to just listen and move on......”
“Got it. You can go back.”
“Th-Thank you!”
“Wait.”
After fuming for a while,
perhaps feeling a little guilty,
Serena pulled out various materials and handed them to the disciple.
“Th-Thank you very much!!!”
“Yeah. Sorry for yelling. It wasn't directed at you.”
“I-I understand!!! Thank you!!!”
Since she had given him some fairly high-grade materials, the disciple left in high spirits, excited to go test them out.
Serena could be curt and had a rough edge to her, but this was exactly why people at the tower didn’t dislike her.
She had a fiery personality, but when she needed to acknowledge something or apologize, she always did it properly.
Because of that, she was quite popular.
And she had real skill to back it up.
With both that character and that ability, of course she was recognized and became the Chief Mage.
While everyone acknowledged this,
Serena grabbed the directive letter the disciple had handed her, still looking annoyed.
‘Hmph. All this fuss just to catch some outsider dark mage, huh, Sword Saint?’
She was a little curious, but quickly pushed the thought out of her head.
Right now, gathering the necessary materials was far more urgent.
She skimmed through the attached notes without much attention.
Looking over the remaining materials, she checked what was needed for the next set of orders.
The materials she had just given away weren't particularly important.
‘Hmm, looks like I'm short a bit.’
There were a few things she was lacking.
It seemed she'd have to travel quite a distance.
‘What a pain, but oh well.’
While she could fight on her own, as an Enchant Mage, she wasn’t exactly a top-tier combatant.
But this was the Kingdom of Rieskan’s Magic Tower, after all.
Naturally, there were plenty of knights guarding the tower.
And even if not knights, there were mercenaries available for hire as escorts.
She figured she could just grab one of them to accompany her.
With that in mind, Serena left her lab and headed toward the guard post.
That’s when she overheard something interesting.
“So you're the outsider who received a letter of recommendation.”
Hearing the voice of the Guard Captain from the room, Serena’s ears perked up.
There were a few outsider mercenaries among the guards, but Serena had never worked with them.
She had heard they weren’t particularly skilled.
But this time, it seemed different.
“To think you even have a recommendation from another tower. Your skills must be guaranteed.”
“...I’m just grateful you think so.”
“No need for modesty. No one would write a recommendation for someone without skills. Now, about the tasks you’ll handle—”
That’s as far as the Guard Captain got before
Serena popped out suddenly, cutting him off.
“New recruit?”
Startled by her sudden appearance, the Guard Captain flinched.
It couldn’t be helped — Serena had deliberately hidden her presence.
The Guard Captain quickly stood and bowed.
“Ah! Chief Mage Serena, you’re here!”
“Yeah, so this the new guy?”
“Yes, that's right. I was just about to introduce him.”
At the Guard Captain’s hurried words, the knight who had been facing away turned around, wearing a pure white robe.
What greeted them was the neatly handsome face of an outsider knight.
Serena smiled slightly at the sight.
And the outsider knight bowed and greeted her.
“Hello, I’m Yu Seong, newly joined.”
“Yu Seong? Nice name.”
“Thank you.”
“I heard you’ve got some skills?”
Serena glanced at the Guard Captain,
who nodded and replied.
“Yes. He’s one of the rare outsiders who's proven himself. He even brought a recommendation from another tower.”
“Hmm, really?”
“Yes, from the notoriously strict Cerule Spire.”
“Oh? If it’s from there, I can trust it. Mind if I take him?”
“Of course not. Please look after him well.”
With a glance, the Guard Captain indicated to Yu Seong, and Yu Seong also nodded in response.
“Yes, I’ll be back.”
With that,
Serena, looking pleased, left with Yu Seong.
And once they were gone, the Guard Captain finally let out a sigh of relief.
“Whew, Serena’s missions are always tough. Thank goodness.”
Normally, the Guard Captain would have gone himself.
But he was glad Serena had taken an interest in the new recruit.
He hoped the newcomer could endure.
Given the history with other outsiders, he had some doubts.
Even if this one had a recommendation.
‘Tsk, but Serena can be... a bit intense...’
He worried slightly, but since Serena wasn’t a bad person,
he decided to just let it be and returned to his other duties.
5.
Walking out of Heptarion with Serena, Yu Seong — or rather, Seong — was inwardly cheering.
He had assumed that, as a new recruit, he'd be stuck doing grunt work for days.
But what luck.
He was approached by someone who seemed pretty high-ranking.
Even the Guard Captain had been deferential to her.
‘Chief Mage has to be a pretty high position, right?’
Seong figured that his conditions might end up being easier than expected.
Honestly, it was great to be connected to someone of high rank from the start.
He hadn’t been fully briefed on the mission, but Serena kindly explained.
“We’re heading to the Mium Mine. I’ll be mining ores there. Your job is to protect me. Easy, right?”
“Yes. Understood.”
“Hmm, they say you’ve got skills. I’m looking forward to seeing them.”
“Thank you.”
Contrary to the Guard Captain’s concerns,
Serena was surprisingly kind, and Seong had no thoughts of backing out.
While heading toward the Mium Mine across the plains, two enormous monsters appeared.
They looked like giant goblins, grotesquely enlarged.
They were about five meters tall — practically giants.
Despite the sudden appearance of monsters, neither Seong nor Serena seemed surprised. If anything, they looked excited.
Both had their own goals — Serena wanted to see Seong's skills, and Seong wanted to impress her.
“Think you can handle it?”
Serena teased lightly.
But Seong simply answered as if it was nothing.
“Yes.”
Seeing how unfazed he was,
Serena «N.o.v.e.l.i.g.h.t» watched with interest as Seong suddenly burst into motion.
Fwoooosh—!!!
The ground where his feet had been pressed deep as he launched forward, air exploding around him.
Stars seemed to scatter around his body, like the tail of a shooting star.
In an instant, he shot toward the monsters like a comet.
Serena watched him, thinking he looked beautiful.
The two green giants, startled by the sudden attack, hurried to prepare for battle.
But the stars gathered in Seong's sword danced like constellations in the night sky.
When they touched the giants’ throats—
Fwoooooosh——!!!
Long gashes tore open, waterfalls of blood pouring out.
Their thick necks hadn’t been completely severed, so Seong swung his sword again.
This time, light shimmered around the blade.
Like starlight bursting forth, his strike cleanly sliced through one giant’s neck.
Srrrch!!!
But it wasn’t over yet.
Before the other giant could even react, a river of energy flowed from Seong’s blade, forming seven constellations in midair.
The stars burst like flashes of light.
Pffffttt!!!
Seven bursts pierced the giant’s body, dropping it dead on the spot.
Thuddd——!!!
Both giants vanished in an instant, like crumbling towers.
Serena blinked in disbelief.
She had heard he was skilled, but to think he could defeat two green giants this quickly?
“...Wow.”
She couldn’t help but admire him.
Watching Seong’s performance, she spoke.
“It’s done. Shall we go?”
“...Y-Yeah.”
Still a little dazed, Serena followed after him.
That’s when Seong heard a voice only he could hear.
–You're having a lot of fun, huh.
Hearing Helena's voice, Seong looked puzzled.
–??????
–Hmph.
And with that, Helena said no more.
What was that about?
