Chapter 411: Why Not?
Lane had a bad feeling about it.
"You don’t mean..." he started before he could stop himself.
"Yes," Ethan nodded at him with a smile. "If you don’t want to come back to our assigned villa, then we should both stay here. How about it?"
Lane went silent, his face dark.
’How about it?’ Of course, he hated it! It was annoying, and terrible, and what was even Ethan thinking?
Could it be that it had been his goal from the start? No... Although Ethan was smiling, his expression was kind of fake. Not at all like someone satisfied with his win. The initial arrangement had likely been his goal for some reason. Probably to mentally torture Lane and drive him insane, as Lane couldn’t think of any other explanation. Either way...
"It’s not a family villa. There’s only one bed," he pointed out.
But Ethan only shrugged his shoulders in response. "Is that a problem?"
"What, are you going to join me and Damien in bed?" Lane scoffed.
It was just a joke. At least it was supposed to be. After all, there was still the couch left. And the idea of the three of them sharing a bed was simply ridiculous...
And yet, Ethan smiled, as he asked, "Why not?"
Lane looked at him in disgust, as if the Guide was a piece of shit he accidentally stepped in. Even Damien looked shocked.
’Why not?’ Because it was highly inappropriate!
Ethan let out a light chuckle, as he watched their expressions. He hadn’t actually been serious when he had said it. Not necessarily because he was against doing it, but he knew that there was no way Lane and Damien would agree. That’s why he hadn’t been deterred at all by their reactions, and quickly smoothed it out, "Our assigned villa is supposed to be a family one. How about we move there, then?"
Damien hesitated. It seemingly sounded like a reasonable solution... But in reality, it was far more complicated. The villa they were in at the moment was the one that he was supposed to be staying in. If nothing happened, then it wouldn’t matter if he were to go sleep somewhere else. However, if an accident were to happen... Everyone would look for him here. He was not a regular team member, but their Team Leader, it would be problematic if others couldn’t find him...
And Lane and Ethan’s villa was the furthest away from him. Coincidentally.
Of course, it could be easily resolved by informing everyone about his new location. The problem was, it was already late, and only getting later... And phones didn’t work here, so there was no way for him to send a message to everyone. He could only either walk around door to door to inform them, or find Gia and ask her to give an announcement through the system that the Trailblazer Guild had been using... Both of which were not only kind of embarrassing, as it was pretty much Damien saying ’I want to stay with my boyfriend’, but also disturbing everyone’s rest time...
All things considered, they could arrange it for the following nights, but for tonight, it was still best for Damien to stay in his assigned villa...
Then what? Send Lane and Ethan away? That didn’t seem like a good idea... Not necessarily because Damien was worried about what Lane might do - he trusted that the man wouldn’t cause the Guide any bodily harm, not while they were on the mission, with Damien being in charge - but rather because he was concerned about Ethan’s intentions. The Guide’s behavior had always been suspicious, but now it got even worse...
The three of them staying together in one villa was the only plausible solution.
It was just that... Damien found it difficult to bring himself to ask someone else to sleep on the couch. He would have taken this spot himself, but it would be a tight squeeze with Lane, and letting Lane and Ethan sleep together in one bed was not an option... Not because Damien didn’t trust Lane, but he simply didn’t like it. Lane was his boyfriend, and Damien was quite possessive, even though he didn’t really show it.
With all that in mind, Damien was quite in a bit of a pickle...
He had to make a decision, though. Otherwise, they might be stuck in this standstill all night long. And he was the only one with the authority to have the final say in what they were going to do.
So eventually, he cleared his throat, interrupting Lane and Ethan’s bickering. "We’re staying here for the night," he commanded. "Wagner, you take the couch. Lane, you sleep in the bedroom with me."
The tone of his voice was decisive. Once he had made up his mind, he pushed aside his personal feelings (well... Kind of. Not entirely, though, because if he had, then he wouldn’t be sharing the bed with Lane), and acted upon his Team Leader role.
Lane instantly quietened down. Although he couldn’t say that he was entirely satisfied with the solution - Ethan wasn’t going to be kicked out, after all - at least he had achieved his main goal, that is, sleeping with Damien. There was no need for him to argue anymore.
As for Ethan... He was also dissatisfied. He had to sleep on the couch? Yes, it was large and looked comfortable, but... There was a proper bed waiting for him in his assigned villa.
The bed that he was now missing on.
Because of Lane.
Still, hearing Damien’s stern voice, he knew better than to push his luck. Getting under his and Lane’s skin was necessary for his mission, to a certain degree, but going too far would only harm him, without bringing any benefits. Sometimes, it was better to just accept the outcome early on to cut his losses short...
He just watched silently as Lane and Damien got ready for bed, and disappeared inside the bedroom, closing the door.
