Chapter 457: Mail Flood
"I really need to dye my hair again."
Lane tugged on a strand of his hair, staring at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. He had just finished scrubbing himself clean, so overall, he looked great, with his skin clear and supple, his eyes sparkling, his lips pink and soft, his cheeks and chin freshly shaved, handsome and all...
But the pastel pink color of his hair still looked pretty dull. And his blonde roots were showing.
It was absolutely unacceptable. Something had to be done about that.
His hair might have still been soft and healthy, with nothing wrong with it aside from that, but the color was just not right.
Well, he had the next two days off. Although he had a lot to do, he should be able to squeeze in a trip to the hairdresser to get his hair done.
After all, even if the world were in chaos, that didn’t mean Lane shouldn’t look good.
That was something to worry about the following day, though. For now...
Lane let go of his hair, tossed his towel aside, and stepped out of the bathroom, wearing nothing but a pair of boxer briefs. He passed by the closet door, completely ignoring its existence, and walked into the living room, throwing himself onto the couch with his laptop and a box of cookies. He opened the latter first, biting into the chewy treat, before turning on his laptop and logging into his ’Boss of the secret organization’s’ account.
Although he didn’t really feel like it, he knew that he should at least start on it, since he had time now. Damien wasn’t going to be back for another hour or two, maybe more... Most likely more, as aside from making the from the raid and settling the upcoming tasks, he would probably have a lot catching up to do on everything that had happened in their absence...
They had been gone for a month, after all. When they had entered the Gate, they were halfway through October, and now it was already the second half of November. A lot could have happened in that time...
Both for the Association, as well as the secret organization.
Which led to Lane staring at the screen with his eyes dark, chewing on his cookie. He finished it, immediately grabbing another one, and finishing that one as well, before finally moving on to scroll through his inbox, albeit still without much enthusiasm.
As for the reason behind his mood, that was because he was flooded with countless new emails with s and proposals! His inbox was literally bursting at the seams! Or, well, it would have been, if it weren’t for the fact that it was digital.
Lane let out a heavy sigh, his eyes gliding over the headers as he scrolled down through all the new mail. He had known it was going to be bad, but he hadn’t expected it would be THIS bad... He wished he could just get himself an assistant to go through all of the boring stuff, but the problem was that it would be hard for him to find someone whom he could trust enough to do that. The only person who met the mark was Ava, but she was always busy with her research, so she didn’t have enough time.
Complaining about the situation wouldn’t reduce the mountain of emails, though, so Lane grabbed another cookie, and started sorting the emails. s from the lab could be left for later, as he didn’t understand most of them anyway and usually just forwarded them to Ava, s from the training and the Forbidden Zone management could also wait, as they weren’t something that required his immediate attention...
In the end, Blanc’s emails seemed like the best place to start. They were the emails that Lane was the least eager to read (even less than the incomprehensible research updates from the lab), but they should give him a good idea of what the current situation in Forbidden Zone No. 74, as well as the secret organization as a whole, was like. And, in case Blanc was trying to push forward any plans that Lane might not like, the sooner he responded, the better.
He started from the oldest, skimming through them in chronological order. The first, sent a day after Lane had entered the dungeon, was just a regular weekly , summarizing everything that was happening in Forbidden Zone No. 74, as well as updating Lane on the progress of the organization’s ongoing endeavors, such as spreading the monsters’ myths and their interpretation. Lane scanned through the whole and all the annexes, and found nothing alarming.
Moving on.
The next email from Blanc contained another weekly . Just as the previous one, it also didn’t contain anything particularly special, perhaps aside from the appearance of a new high-ranking Gate just outside of the Zone’s walls. That was going to require some attention, but it wasn’t something Lane would have to deal with personally, he could just delegate the task to Vulcan, who was more than competent enough to handle it, even though he was just an A-ranker. Lane would contact him about it after checking the rest of the emails.
Moving on.
The next one...
Lane paused, his fingers freezing half an inch above the touchpad.
The next email from Blanc had been sent on a Thursday, even though he always took care of the weekly s on Saturdays. With a man as pedantic as him, it could only mean one thing.
Something must have happened. Something important enough to warrant his contacting Lane immediately. Or, at least sending a separate email, instead of simply including the information in the weekly . The title didn’t reveal what it was, it simply stated, ’URGENT! Update from the spies in the Association’...
Lane had a bad feeling about it. Still, he had no choice but to click...
As soon as he scanned through the first two paragraphs, a long sigh escaped his mouth.
Blanc had found out about the summit’s location.
