Chapter 1157: Chapter 1159: The Truth Revealed
According to the information Lin Fei received, the opposing force numbered twenty thousand, while they only had a mere thousand, making it impossible to defeat the enemy. Since defeating them wasn’t an option, Lin Fei had no reason to send his brothers to their deaths.
Therefore, before any confrontation took place, Lin Fei instructed everyone to retreat immediately, bypass the Trackless City, and head toward a distant stronghold.
When Python and Tiger arrived, they found no trace of Lin Fei. They eventually split up to search and finally found the footprints left by Lin Fei and his group. After considering this, Python and Tiger decided to send people to follow them.
However, after pursuing for a long distance, they discovered a highway ahead, where the trail ended. They immediately understood that the enemy must have used a convoy to pick everyone up, which meant they found nothing despite having a massive force of twenty thousand. In front of numerous mercenary groups, and in a situation of numerical superiority, they ended up returning empty-handed.
One can imagine that they might not be deemed disgraceful, but upon returning, they would certainly be considered useless!
"Damn! I never expected Lin Fei to be such a coward, fleeing without a fight. I’m so disappointed!" Tiger exclaimed.
"We have twenty thousand men, and according to intelligence, they have just over a thousand. We should have realized earlier that Lin Fei might end up fleeing. After all, he’s not a fool," Python commented. Lin Fei had been using a hard-hitting approach in confrontations with them for the past two months, never once fleeing before. Thus, Python and Tiger mistakenly believed Lin Fei would again go head-to-head with them, only to end up at a disadvantage.
Looking at the grand troops, returning the same way would surely invite evaluation from their own people, as they achieved nothing. Even without losing any soldiers, it was a kind of disgrace.
"Python, are we really leaving just like this?" Tiger asked. Despite his robust physique, he was not without brains. Returning like this would definitely make them a laughing stock among other mercenaries.
"What else can we do? Since Lin Fei has escaped, it’s not our fault, so everyone should be understanding. Don’t worry, let’s move on." Python wasn’t sure if he was comforting himself or Tiger. After saying this, he led the entire army towards the headquarters of the Poison Scorpion Mercenary Group.
Unbeknownst to them, such a large contingent had already been infiltrated by several people.
"How’s it going? How many of our brothers managed to slip in?" Lin Fei asked.
Lin Fei sat in a dimly lit room, with Xue Zhi opposite him. His words were clearly directed at Xue Zhi.
Xue Zhi nodded, saying, "About a dozen of our brothers have infiltrated. From here on, they will have to rely on themselves, as we can’t provide any more help."
"There’s no other way. That’s how war is. It’s like how our approximately two thousand brothers exchanged five hundred lives for the enemy’s loss of three thousand. War inevitably involves death. Even though we managed to save over five hundred injured brothers, it still doesn’t sit well with us. You can understand that feeling, right?" Lin Fei sighed.
They initially had about two thousand troops. To cover the truth, it appeared to others that more than a thousand were lost in battle. In reality, they had saved around five hundred injured brothers, meaning the actual loss was only five hundred. Even so, what appeared as a victory against the odds to outsiders weighed heavily on Lin Fei’s heart, as those were the lives of his brothers.
Xue Zhi shook his head helplessly, saying, "You’re the one who came up with this plan, but you also said it’s all worth it. At least the one thousand we’ve selected now are like a fearless, iron-blooded force! By the way, boss, you mentioned Leng Feng has already figured out our plan, which isn’t good news for us!"
Lin Fei replied, "Leng Feng is a trustworthy friend, so rest assured. By the way, what’s the situation with Radar? The other mercenary groups should be making their moves by now."
"As of now, things aren’t looking good for Radar. Although the three major mercenary groups haven’t extended invitations, small mercenary groups have been inviting him non-stop because they have their eyes on the vast intelligence network he’s created. There should be some action soon," Xue Zhi said.
Lin Fei nodded, saying, "Xue Zhi is a crucial figure infiltrating the three major mercenary groups, and no mistakes can be made!"
Xue Zhi chuckled, "I know that, but aren’t you planning to inform Little Tiger? He seems to have grown a bit more temperamental due to your cold shoulder."
"Don’t worry, he’s fine. He’s much tougher than we imagine. Coming from the countryside, this kind of brotherhood often forges a stronger resolve. Given that we are no longer directly confronting Poison Scorpion, it’s time to bring Little Tiger into play. Without you guys by my side, I’ll have to rely on him instead," Lin Fei smiled and said.
"Boss, you shouldn’t say that. After all, I’m still by your side too. At least I can keep you company when you’re feeling lonely," Xue Zhi teased.
"Get lost, you big tease. I bet you’ll soon be snapped up by someone, though it’s hard to say who. Just like we don’t know who has their eye on Radar now, there are too many unknowns. I’m even beginning to doubt if I’ve made the right decision here!" Lin Fei said, bewildered.
When Lin Fei returned from the Western Country, he had witnessed a bit of the iceberg of the Gentleman Mercenary Group, making him realize how insignificant he was compared to these three giants. So one night, he came up with this idea to make the best use of everyone’s abilities, scattering them to create opportunities for their development while he distracted the enemies.
Xue Zhi said, "There’s nothing wrong with your decision, boss. Just as you said, as long as we succeed, our Judgement Mercenary Group will quickly rise again, becoming a force second only to the three major powers. So your decision isn’t wrong, and all of us brothers support you!"
"Thank you, but it’s really risky. I shouldn’t use your lives as stakes in a gamble!" Lin Fei said.
Only he, Xue Zhi, Radar, and Butcher knew of this plan. No one else did, meaning everyone was just following in their footsteps.
