The Max Level Hero Has Returned!-Chapter 1112

Chapter 1112
“Eva, didn’t I tell you not to overdo it?” Perserque said with a troubled expression as she slowly descended onto the quiet training ground. There stood Evangeline, swinging her sword by herself.
Born between the ancient dragon Eclipse and Hercules, Evangeline had since become a precious daughter in Davey’s family.
Due to her non-human origins, her growth rate was different from that of humans. Unlike Darian, who was the same age but still just babbling and barely able to move on his own, she already looked like a girl in her mid-teens.
On top of that, despite only being two years old, she had already attained the immense power of a Sword Master.
Of course, from Perserque's perspective, things like that didn’t matter much. What mattered more was whether that wild girl would cause a little less trouble.

Oh!
You're back?!” With a bright smile, Evangeline ran over and threw herself into her arms.
“Yes. I’m pretty sure I told you not to keep swinging your sword so late into the night, young lady.”
“But I feel like if I push just a bit more, I can get even stronger!” Evangeline whined playfully.
Perserque smiled gently, finding her antics adorable. “It's good to be diligent, but if your body suffers from overexertion I’ll make you stop immediately.”
She laughed sheepishly, wiping sweat from her brow with the towel draped over her neck. “Okaaay.”
“The night air can get chilly, so let’s head in.”
“What about Darian?”

“He’s fast asleep. Probably next to Aeria.”

Hehe,
I wanna sleep with Darian!!” Evangeline skipped ahead excitedly, but then stopped in her tracks.
“Eva?”
Perserque, noticing her standing still while gazing up at the dusky night sky, reached out and gently touched her shoulder, puzzled.
“Mother,” she said in a low voice.

Hm?

“That... Was it always like that?”
Evangeline lifted her head and pointed toward the sky.
Originally, their world had two moons. The red moon Syras, and the blue moon Cryas. Yet two years prior, after Davey annihilated the God of the Abyss and Sleep, Thanatos, he used the vitality she held to raise a new moon from the Spirit Realm.
The stem of vitality visible from all dimensions and worlds, the third moon Thanatos.
“Thanatos? There's nothing wrong with it,” Perserque muttered, not understanding.
Evangeline closed her eyes for a moment and shook her head with force. “
Huh?
Looks fine now, you're right.”
Perserque didn't understand. “
Hm?

“No, never mind. I must’ve seen it wrong,” Evangeline replied with a sheepish laugh.
She then looked at Perserque, who was holding her hand as they walked together, then turned her head. Just for a moment, Thanatos in the sky had looked strange.
The green-tinted full moon had been split in half, with countless fragments scattered around it. Some massive energy trail, like a Milky Way or something else entirely, had been stretched long across the sky.
“Am I... just imagining things?”
* * *
Fwoosh!! Boom!!
Following an ear-splitting explosion, Kathryn was blasted back, her fiery hair whipping through the air. Davey didn’t let her get away, swiftly pursuing her and reaching out.

Hmph!
Impressive, aren’t you?”
She struck with a confident smile.
She was without a doubt the strongest warrior in the Lydnis Empire. Even when fighting alone, she was a force equivalent to an entire legion.
In a world where Masters were considered strategic weapons, there existed those who surpassed even that, becoming massive power balances in and of themselves.
In other words, the woman before him was someone who could waltz into Alberta’s royal castle alone, tear the place apart, behead the captain of Alberta’s elite Royal Knight Order, and casually walk away without anyone able to stop her.

Tch.
” Davey took a sharp breath. He knew he needed to carefully control his power output.
[Longsword]
[Mountain Split]
Crack!! Crash!!

Krrr.

Flicking the shamanic rattle in his right hand, Davey seized control of the space around them. Then, with the Blue Ribbon in his left hand, he delivered a powerful slash across her body.
Even though he’d tried to restrain his strength, blood burst from her shoulder as the ground behind her split open like a massive crevasse.
Blue Ribbon didn’t have the inherent ability to cut through physical matter, but for Davey, who could slice through just about anything with a simple branch to achieve such lethality was far from difficult.
“You still won’t kill me.”
She was unstable. Davey knew that it wasn't a calculated betrayal or some shift in nature. He had seen enough of her over time to know better.
“Grand Duchess Kathryn, let’s take a breather.”

Hah!
How long do you think you can keep mocking me? I’ve worked endlessly, just to beat you!” she shouted with her eyes flared.
Davey didn’t miss that opening. Driving her to the ground, he pierced Blue Ribbon into her shoulder.
“That’s not my problem.”
Squelsh!!
The blue blade pierced through her shoulder and drove into the earth as pain twisted across her face.
She was fighting like someone who had put everything on the line. Despite her shoulder being run through, she tried to mount a counterattack. Alas, he continued to pin her down, locking her in place so that she couldn’t move.
“Grand Duchess, if you keep resisting, I might just have to put a curse of baldness on you.”
That single threat seemed to hit her hard.
When she flinched and hesitated, Davey took the chance to jab his finger at her solar plexus.
[Touch of Death]
He struck his fingers rapidly, almost creating a rhythm as he forcefully manipulated her meridians.
Depending on how it was used, the technique could either kill a person instantly or subdue them without a trace. Of course, it required a deep understanding of the opponent’s body. With someone like Grand Duchess Kathryn, with whom Davey had been acquainted for quite a while, he could pinpoint the right locations.
“T-This is cheating!” With that final bit of resistance, she stiffened like a corpse.
“G-Grand Duchess Kathryn!” Tsuna burst onto the scene in shock, and Belga immediately leapt in front of her to shield her.
She questioned, “Y-You didn’t... kill her, did you?! A grand duchess of the Empire?!”
“I obviously didn't. What good would that do me?”
There were still too many unanswered questions, after all. He needed to know why she had come all the way there; why she had tried to kill Tsuna; and what had caused her sudden change in behavior.
Davey tried channeling mana into her body, then divine power. He had hoped to purge whatever anomaly afflicted her using Blue Ribbon’s special properties, yet it strangely brought no change.
‘So it’s not an ongoing non-physical thing, then?’
He next suspected that she had been hit with a one-time brainwashing spell. Still, it hadn’t even been a full day since he’d spoken normally with her. Given the unconscious state she was in, the whole situation was screaming that something wasn’t right.
“Belga,” Davey said in a low voice, “what did you see in this woman?”
Tsuna turned her head sharply, staring at Belga with a tense expression. She also wanted an answer.
“I... I’m not really sure,” he said with a hesitant tone.
Davey coldly pressed him further, “Be clear. Depending on the next words out of your mouth, you could become a suspect too.”
Tsuna flinched, clearly confused why he was being so harsh on a kid.
“Humans,” Belga murmured quietly. “Humans follow a certain flow, like a pattern.”
“I know that.”
“The weird part is that she’s different. She looks human, but something’s off.”
Davey turned back to Kathryn. He couldn’t sense anything abnormal, and her behavior and reactions all seemed real. That was precisely why it made the whole thing even more suspicious and confusing.
“Tsuna.”
“Y-Yes?”
“It’d be best if we kept her little ‘visit’ here a secret.”
When the Alberta Kingdom had learned of Marquis Alka of the Lyndis Empire supporting Vatan, they’d nearly gone to war. If word then got out that the Grand Duchess of that empire had gone berserk in Alberta, the barely settled down situation would explode instantly. Yet more than that, something else was more important.
“What will you do with her?” Tsuna cautiously asked.
“We need to confirm something.” With his father-in-law. Directly.
If something was wrong, there was bound to be an inconsistency. According to Belga, the anomaly affecting Kathryn was clearly the result of some external, abnormal force.
Davey kicked a rift into space, then locked in on the coordinates of the Lyndis Empire.
“Belga, come with me. It seems you’re the only one who can identify something off about people.”
Belga silently turned to look back at Tsuna. Her pink hair fluttered as she looked at Davey and Belga with worry in her eyes.
Suppressing her conflicted feelings, she smiled gently. “Go on. I’ll have something sweet and delicious ready for you when you get back.”
At her words, Belga quietly followed behind Davey.
* * *
The Emperor of the Lyndis Empire, Deorte El Lyndis, was quietly savoring wine in his bedroom alongside his son and most devoted follower. That was, of cours,e the Crown Prince, Alberth El Lyndis.
In the midst of their peaceful get-together, Davey suddenly appeared at the imperial palace. Shocked, they quickly worked to bring him in discreetly, away from the prying eyes of others.
The new arrival spoke to his companion, “What do you see?”
“They’re fine. There’s nothing unusual about them,” Belga said while staring calmly at the elderly man in front of him.
Davey gave a short nod.
Referring to the Emperor as ‘them’ with no formality, he could tell that Belga was definitely a bold one.
“Davey, what do you think you’re doing showing up like this without so much as a word?”
“Father-in-law.” Davey gave a brief bow, then carefully laid down the person he had slung across his shoulder.
In that instant, Emperor Deorte and Crown Prince Alberth’s eyes went wide in shock.

“G-Grand Duchess!!”
Startled, Crown Prince Alberth rushed forward in an attempt to support her, but the unconscious Grand Duchess merely slumped forward as a limp noodle in his arms.
Since joining the Royal Knight Order, she had never been knocked out by anyone in a public conflict. It was the case even in her first sparring match with Davey. While she’d essentially admitted defeat, she had never once lost consciousness.
To the Lyndis Empire, Grand Duchess Kathryn Carabella was that kind of stubborn and resilient person.
“What happened?” Unlike the flustered Alberth, Emperor Deorte, Aeria’s father and his father-in-law, looked to Davey for answers. “She’s been itching for a rematch with you lately, and I doubt she misjudged your strength. So, how did she end up like this? While it might not be a fatal injury, for her to lose consciousness...”
“I knocked her out intentionally. I went as easy as I could.”
“What did you say?” Emperor Deorte’s face darkened. Son-in-law or not, Davey had left one of his loyalists in a pitiful state. “And who is this boy?”
“You don’t need to worry about him. He’s the only one who can tell whether Your Majesty and the Crown Prince are truly unaffected.”
The two exchanged a confused glance at his words. Davey then explained her condition, what she had done, and the details behind her behavior.
“That’s ridiculous!! Why would she do something like that—?!”
Bang!!
His shout was cut short as Emperor Deorte forcefully slammed the table.
“Alberth. He’s not finished speaking.”
“Y-Yes, Your Majesty.”
* * *
After hearing the full story, Crown Prince Alberth wore an expression of disbelief while Emperor Deorte remained silent.
“Father-in-law.” Davey intentionally did not address him as Your Majesty, a gesture that emphasized the personal nature of their meeting as well as the trust he was placing in him. “She’s someone Aeria cares about most. You know her personality isn’t like this, don’t you?”
“Yes. The Grand Duchess isn’t someone who would do such a thing. I recognize that, but it doesn’t mean I know every detail of her life. Perhaps...”
“She’s twisted,” Belga spoke up, drawing the attention of both men.
“How dare you! That’s His Majes—”
“Alberth, be quiet.”
“Y-Yes, Your Majesty.” Alberth shrank back instantly and fell silent once more.
“I’m not human, and I have no intention of abiding by human customs or rules.”
“What a brazen child.”
“Humans have a certain natural form, but that woman’s was distorted. No, to be more precise, it’s been altered to appear normal.”
Listening to Belga’s explanation, Emperor Deorte’s expression grew more serious. “If what you’re saying is true, what kind of change are we talking about?”
“I don’t know, but based on what I’ve seen so far?” Belga calmly dropped a bombshell. “Humans may change, but it’s as if they’ve become completely different people.”
“A disease, then? Or some form of brainwashing?”
“Neither. Or rather both, but not exactly.”
Even he couldn’t pinpoint the cause.
Kathryn Carabella looked perfectly fine, but she wasn’t. Due to that bizarre balance, neither magic nor medicine could cure her. The fact that even divine power couldn’t heal her meant her dire state was being interpreted as completely normal.
It was the worst kind of situation. An irreversible corruption and phenomenon that divine power couldn’t touch.
It was as if the person he once knew had been swapped out with someone entirely different. The situation was twisted and hopeless.
At that moment, Alberth spoke cautiously, “Your Majesty, could it be...?”
“Yes, I had the same thought.”
“You have a lead?”
“The Grand Duchess was investigating something recently. There have been a number of murders and disturbances within the capital.”
“Murders and riots,
eh
?”
So it wasn’t just about the Grand Duchess.
Just then, an envoy burst into the room, shouting in panic, “Your Majesty!!”
“Let him in.”
Clack!!
The door swung open, and the noble who entered froze momentarily at the sight of Davey and Belga, before quickly dropping to one knee.
“T-The Contas Empire... has declared war on the Great Empire of Ming!”
“What?! There must be a reason! Surely there’s a reason for this!!”
Startled by Emperor Deorte’s outburst, the noble stammered, “T-There was a rebellion in Ming, and the Son of Heaven was assassinated.”
The Emperor of the Great Empire of Ming, known externally as the Son of Heaven, was actually a small, young girl.
After the Empress Dowager—who had grown greedy in her attempt to save her daughter—passed away, and the collusion with the vampires was cut off, the Son of Heaven began leading the Ming Empire with her own strength.
The adorable young girl, who had once shown clear signs of deep affection toward Davey, had since become someone who regularly sent letters to Heins Territory asking about how things were going.
“Ming?”
“Yes, one of the great powers of the Western Continent. For something like this to happen overnight...”
“What’s the Hyeon Empire’s response?”
“It seems they’re moving in cooperation with the Contas Empire.”
The Daughter of Heaven had put considerable effort into building friendships with neighboring nations. Though her position as a powerful ruler could’ve made her arrogant, she preferred peace over war.
“Understood. You may go. Be sure to summon the envoys here at first light.”
“Y-Yes, Your Majesty.”
Under normal circumstances, the envoy would’ve expected the Emperor to summon his envoys immediately. Yet, despite finding his actions strange, the envoy didn’t question it further.
“Tell me, is there a way to return the Grand Duchess to her original state?” Emperor Deorte asked the young boy in an uneasy tone.
He had subdued Kathryn to avoid the risk that she might go berserk again once she regained consciousness. She wasn’t someone to be taken lightly, as if someone of her caliber lost control, the consequences would be catastrophic.
She had to be brought back to her true self before that could happen.
In response to Emperor Deorte, Belga quietly shook his head. “As things stand, it’s impossible. That is her normal state now.”
In other words, unless there was something abnormal to fix, there was nothing to heal. If her state had been deemed normal, there was simply no way to cure her.
“No matter who she was in the past, once twisted like this, there’s no way to undo it.”
For all intents and purposes, she could be considered gone for good.
“Davey, please save her! I will give anything!”
“At the moment, it’s not possible,” Davey responded, just as calmly as Begla. “We don’t have enough information yet. Besides, this isn’t something I can simply fix by force.”
Usually, interference was easy. Unfortunately, just as Belga had said, she was by all appearances normal. Only the person inside had changed, and there was no known method to correct that.
“Even with the power of a Saint... it’s impossible?”
“It’s hard to give you a definitive answer.”
The weight of that single sentence seemed to crush the room.
Emperor Deorte gritted his teeth, one hand covering his forehead. “The only thing to figure out right now is why she attacked Chancellor Tsuna.”
“She attacked Chancellor Tsuna...?”
“There must be a reason. If she had been normal, her thought processes must’ve worked based on some kind of logic.”
If so, retracing her intentions might reveal the true cause of the incident. The force behind it could be a living being, or in the worst-case scenario, something classified as a disease.
“Poor Grand Duchess.”
“Damn it,” Alberth muttered hopelessly.
The face of Emperor Deorte, who rarely showed his emotions, twisted completely in anguish.
* * *
Tap. Tap.
Someone walked calmly down a dark corridor. Judging by the silhouette bathed in moonlight, it was clear the figure was a woman.
Evangeline was sound asleep. In fact, she was so deeply asleep that she wouldn’t have noticed if someone came and carried her away.
Curled up next to her, Darian was also fast asleep, sucking on his fingers and clinging tightly to her. A short distance away, Aeria laid on her side, breathing peacefully in her sleep.
Her ears twitched at the sound that broke the silence—the soft patter of bare feet on the floor.
“Illyna?” Her sense of smell and hearing as a beastfolk was incomparable to that of an ordinary human.
Still half-asleep, she rubbed her eyes and looked around. She was sure she’d just heard something, but eventually concluded she had imagined it.
Wearing a puzzled expression, she slowly got up, careful not to wake the children, picked up a mana stone lantern, and stepped into the hallway.
Her long nightgown dragged softly behind her. “Illyna?”
She could’ve sworn the scent she’d just picked up was that same sweet smell Illyna often carried, yet the hallway was empty. There was not a soul in sight.
“Maybe I just slept wrong...?” With a slightly confused look, she perked her ears once more and turned around, only to freeze in surprise. “
Eek!

“Aeria!” Illyna said, equally shocked.
“I-Illyna.” Aeria sighed with relief.
“Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
“What about you...?”
“I was just waiting for Davey, that’s all.”
Aeria lowered her head, then suddenly flinched. Yet in the end, she didn’t say anything about it.
“You scared me, showing up out of nowhere.”
“Sorry. Go back to bed.”
“Okay...” Aeria stepped back into the room, clutching the lantern tightly. Once inside, her eyes widened, and she let out a short, shaky breath.
Seeing Illyna in the hallway wasn’t unusual. There were times she’d seen her wandering the halls with Davey, saying she couldn’t sleep. Walking alone like that in silence wasn’t unheard of either.
However, she couldn’t figure out why she had been carrying a sword.
