The Max Level Hero Has Returned!-Chapter 1228
Chapter 1228
Davey finally returned!
Heins Territory was filled with restless buzz at the return of its rightful lord.
Perserque ran her hand over her belly as she quietly looked out the window and told him, “You were gone for too long.”
“Sorry.”
“I heard everything from Megalodria, so I won’t say any more. Just... come here,” she said as she turned her head.
Silver hair swaying as she gave a soft smile, she gestured to her round belly. “Our child must’ve been missing their father—they’ve been kicking up a storm, but now they’re quiet.”
“
Haha,
our youngest. You’ve been doing well,
huh?
”
There was something strange about having a child. Watching that little thing wriggle inside his wife gave Davey butterflies in his stomach in a good way, as if he had the whole world in his hands. He wondered if the baby had truly gone still simply because he had come home, just like she said.
“But it seems like the child is carrying demonic force as well...” Perserque worriedly observed.
Davey reassured her, “I’ve already told Shadow to find some Sacred Grass to suppress it.”
“Oh yeah, I heard Sacred Grass was discovered in a kingdom in the southern part of the Central Continent. Still... will that be enough?”
“Don’t worry. I’m not about to let anything happen to my kid.”
The child was both his and Perserque’s. It was inevitable that they would carry her demonic blood and demonic force. Unfortunately, demons and humans hadn’t fully reconciled yet. If the child couldn’t control their energy and started letting it out in the wrong crowds, things would get complicated.
That was why they were looking for Sacred Grass.
“Davey.”
“Yeah.”
As he silently rested his ear against her belly with his eyes closed, Perserque placed her hand on his cheek. “I’m glad you made it back safe.”
“Come on now, your husband’s not the type to die or get hurt that easily.”
“Still, I can’t help but worry. If you don’t check in regularly from now on, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
It was only natural for her to be concerned—it was her one and only family, after all.
“I’ll make sure to deal with Megalodria, that gossipy salamander.”
“I should stop you under normal circumstances... but this time, it was too busy stuffing its face to even get back with important updates for me.”
“Exactly. Damn, I wonder who taught it such bad habits.”
“Clearly, you.” She chuckled and looked up at Davey as he stood.
“So then, what does a husband who’s returned after a long time away owe his wife? Care to show me?” she said slyly.
Davey stared at her, momentarily dazed by that smile. He then slowly reached out and gently kissed her on the lips. “I’m sorry.”
“I’d prefer ‘I love you’ over ‘I’m sorry’.”
“That works, too. I’ll say both.”
As Davey laughed, Perserque blushed and looked away. Her eyes fell on Aeria, who sat nearby with a rather sulky look on her face. “You’re not thinking of kissing just me, are you?”
“Of course not.” Davey immediately walked over to Aeria, who quickly closed her eyes as if she’d been waiting.
“I-I’m ready!”
Hearing the anticipatory enthusiasm in her response, he wondered if preparation was really necessary for a kiss between husband and wife. Regardless, just as he leaned in to kiss her, Darian, resting snugly in her arms, reached out and yanked his hair.
The little tyke burst into laughter like it was the funniest thing in the world. “
Kya-haha!
”
“You little...”
“Darian! Don’t pull Daddy’s hair!” Aeria scolded him with a disapproving look, but he simply snuggled deeper into her arms. Then, after glancing between her and Davey, he finally stretched out his little arms toward Davey. He clearly wanted to be held.
“
Sigh...
” Davey lifted Darian into the air, gave Aeria a quick kiss, and took him into his arms. “What? Are you sulking because Daddy was gone for too long?”
Unbothered, Darian just kept pointing at something with his tiny arm.
“This! This! This!”
“You want to go over there? That wall?” He guided Davey to a spot decorated with soft fur, gently touched it, then giggled and made eye contact with him.
Call it spoiled or whatever, but seeing his angelic smile melted all the frustration in Davey’s heart in an instant.
“Davey, you know about the war on Earth, right?”
“Yeah, some troops were sent by the Nacha Empire.”
Those beings had been corrupted and transformed by demons. With the demon-possessed emperor gone, Davey had thought they were handled. Yet, apparently not.
“From what you said, they should’ve vanished. Nonetheless, it seems they’ve become autonomous or something, because the war’s still ongoing.”
“
Hmm.
”
“With things getting worse, it seemed like those on Earth wanted to ask you for help.”
“No. Leave it alone.” Davey had a cooperative relationship with Earth, but he knew that doing more than the treaty stated would only devalue what he brought to the table.
“If they really need my help, they’ll come crawling with offerings. Let it sit until then.”
“But so many people could get hurt in the meantime.”
“Sure, from a humanitarian perspective, there’s no reason not to help...” However, the ones trying to exploit the situation were what made things annoying. “Can’t be helped. Anyway, what about Illyna? She didn’t jump into the warzone, did she?”
“No, she didn’t. She shares your position on intervention. But... Josiah recently caused a mess.”
“What?”
Josiah Frances, an assistant professor who always stirred up trouble. He wondered what she had done this time.
Within Heins Territory, there were two groups of crazed lunatics. One was the Gourmet Research Society, led by Yuria Helishana. They’d been quiet ever since receiving new research funds, possibly scheming something troublesome again.
The other was the Truth Seeking Club. It was led by Tiara, the granddaughter of the Asgard ship’s chief technical advisor Edison as well as an alchemist herself, among the six greatest beauties on the continent. She had been tied to Davey by a political marriage in the past.
The second member was his younger sister, Aeonitia O'Rowane, who had shown an unusual thirst for research since childhood. The final member was, of course, Josiah Frances.
“What kind of mess did they get into this time?”
“Well, since you left without giving Josiah any blood, she basically went into withdrawal and started snarling at everyone like a feral cat.”
Now that Davey thought about it, he truly hadn’t given her blood in quite some time. Still, he was sure he had left her a plentiful supply of blood packs in storage. To hear she was going through withdrawals gave him a strange feeling.
“I heard she threw a tantrum, storming out and claiming it was because you hadn’t visited in a while.”
‘Okay, that’s on me. I’ll let it slide if things aren’t too bad.’
He understood her condition now. “So? What exactly did she do?”
“Summoning.”
“What?”
“She started researching contract summoning magic, saying she’d come suck your blood herself. That was when she got pulled into some weird summoning circle, becoming temporarily bound by contract in some kingdom in central Tionis. Illyna went to check on her.”
Davey silently closed his eyes and nodded. He figured it probably wouldn’t be a big issue, but if Josiah’s identity as a vampire was revealed, he knew things would get annoying fast. Unlike Milpieu, as long as Josiah didn’t literally bite someone in public, it wouldn’t be a problem to hide her identity.
“That aside, Davey,” Perserque said as she tugged on his arm, “What’s going on with those two?”
He’d already given a brief explanation of his and Reina’s conditions and what had happened to the outer dimension of Nacha, so he wondered why she was even asking again. “Exactly how I explained.”
“I get that... but doesn’t that mean all the negative energy should be gone now?”
“It is. Not a trace was left behind.”
“So there’s zero negative energy left, and
that
is how they’re acting?”
Davey followed her gaze toward the estate’s garden. There he saw Reina and his Saintness Shuneria Recken, both sitting at a small, elegant table while quietly chatting and sipping tea.
“They look like they’re getting along, to me,” he insisted.
“That’s what you call getting along?”
“
Hm?
” Davey tilted his head in confusion as Aeria and Perserque stared at him with expressions that screamed disbelief.
“Dad! What’s going on with those two?!” Evangeline burst through the door and shouted at him, demanding an explanation.
“Evangeline!” Davey spread his arms wide, motioning for her to come into his embrace.
She was his precious daughter, after all. While some people say that no matter how much you love a child, there’s always a difference when they’re not your own by blood, Davey had never felt that way.
Evangeline reflexively reached out to hug him, but then suddenly flinched. “Don’t... Don't treat me like a kid!”
Then she turned and ran off.
Davey blinked. Just then, he noticed that the rainbow slime perched on her shoulder looked deeply intimidated.
“Per...?”
“Makes sense. If one person likes someone else too much, then even the slightest twist can turn everything sideways. She is Illyna at her core, after all...”
Aeria commented, “But it feels a little different. If it’s like you said, shouldn’t we be affected too?”
“It’s probably a different kind of possessiveness. From what I can tell, that kid’s still afraid of men.”
Davey ignored their cryptic exchange and turned his attention to Amy, who had just entered the room and handed over s.
* * *
Davey’s Saintess, Shuneria Recken, felt like she couldn’t breathe.
Reina was smiling on the outside, yet the aura she radiated was far from peaceful.
Since arriving there, Shuneria had met Davey’s wives. Honestly, she’d been flustered by the fact that he had multiple of them—yet considering that Davey was a prince from a royal family, it wasn’t mindblowing that he could’ve had political marriages and ended up in a polygamous relationship.
After all, the Emperor of Nacha, who had once discussed a political marriage with her, also had many wives.
That wasn’t the issue. What caught her off guard was how beautiful they all were. They were truly stunning.
She had seen many beauties in her life, but Perserque, the de facto mistress of the entire estate, was elegant and breathtaking to the point that she couldn’t help but feel jealous. She had a natural, graceful smile and an air of composure. Looking at her, Shuneria couldn’t help but be in awe of her class and dignity.
She wondered if, when she someday fell in love and married someone, she’d be able to carry herself with such grace. The thought left her feeling half melancholic, half hopeful.
Those wives weren’t her pressing concern. The real issue was the woman in front of her, Celestial Reina.
She was the angel bound to Davey. When Reina had first expressed her madness-tinged jealousy toward her, Shuneria had naturally assumed she must treat his wives the same way.
However, to her surprise, Reina was miles away from acting cold and cynical around them. Quite the opposite, as she was genuinely affectionate toward them. There was not a single trace of insincerity in how she acted.
In all honesty, they were the people she should be the most wary of if her feelings for Davey were rooted in romantic desire. Yet Reina showed no signs of that kind of jealousy.
Only then did Shuneria finally realize that Reina, that psychotic bitch, wasn’t jealous of lovers—her obsession was rooted in something else entirely.
“
Ummm.
I’ll be going back soon... So there’s no need to glare at me like that, is there?”
“When did I glare?”
“I mean...” Shuneria felt like she’d just eaten something that didn’t sit right.
The place Davey had brought her to was peaceful. Strangely enough, everything there felt different, constantly reminding her that she was in a different world.
From what she’d heard, the dimension Davey belonged to had a completely different kind of civilization from her own. She didn’t understand it, but she also didn’t really care too much about it.
Davey’s wives were incredibly kind, and they truly seemed like good people. Of course, that didn’t mean Reina was a bad person, and Shuneria knew that. Nonetheless, that girl was obsessively devoted to her master, Davey, and to an abnormal degree. For an angel like her, the existence of a Saintness like Shuneria was the ultimate position to be jealous of.
At first, Shuneria had thought her strange behavior was simply due to being tainted by negative energy. She realized that wasn’t the case the moment she saw her face completely change into a sweet and innocent one when she spoke to Davey, as if nothing had happened.
‘That woman... she’s a full-blown psycho. 100% psychotic.’
That thought was enough to make Shuneria press her hands anxiously to her chest. Honestly, she wanted to be sent back home immediately. If she could beg someone to do so, she’d be more than willing to.
However, she couldn’t leave right away. From what Davey had said, she’d have to stay there for a few more weeks, which probably meant there were lingering issues.
Regardless, she wanted out. She wanted someone to save her! She didn’t want Reina to be staring at her anymore.
“
Ummm.
I get it, really, but you’re making me really uncomfortable.”
“I didn’t do anything, though?” Reina responded with a smile.
“
Haaah.
” Shuneria let out a long sigh and pressed her hands together as if in prayer.
“You should really put your hands down,” Reina advised.
“I’m warning you! I’m going to make a prayer and tattle on you if you keep this up.”
Seeing her continue to glare intensely, Shunera began to pray.
[O’ dear God... Your poor little lamb cries out before You...]
Just as Shuneria continued her prayer, Reina jumped up to stop her.
[HELP!!!!!!!]
Her desperate cry rang through the heavens. In an instant, Davey had appeared mid-air. “Hey! Don’t just start praying like that, it gives me headaches!”
“What do you expect a Saintess to do if not pray?!”
“Your prayer is so messed up that it sounds like demonic whispers!”
“I don’t care! You're the one who made me your Saintess!”
“Oh yeah? Fine! I’ll just rip that stigmata right off your back then, so turn around!”
“
Kyaaa!!
”
She hadn’t summoned him. A Saintess summoning the god they served was virtually impossible, even if they served a divine being that wasn't a complete god. Yet, Davey had appeared nonetheless.
It was because her prayer had pierced directly into his mind like a bullet.
“The goddess is really trying to mess with me...”
However, Shuneria wasn’t thinking about any of that. All she worried about was how she’d be able to get away from that psycho woman.
“This is so unfair! Please... just help me!” She threw herself into his arms, then instinctively glanced up at the window of the lord’s manor. There, in the room Davey had just come from, she saw Perserque giggling like she found the whole thing adorable.
Meanwhile, Reina said nothing. Her eyes silently locked onto Shuneria before a voice murmured, “Should I just kill her...?”
It was just a muttered grumble, but Shuneria heard her loud and clear.
‘That crazy bitch...!’
Yes, Reina had once saved Shuneria and her siblings, so she should be thankful. Even so, that psycho was going way too far!
“Reina?” Davey began.
Wearing a bright, sparkling smile like nothing had happened, Reina looked at Davey. “Yes? What is it?”
Shuneria made up her mind.
‘
I can’t stay here any longer.’
They served the same divinity, and yet, she knew that the situation wasn’t right.
“P-Please send me back! My siblings are waiting, and I have to to Princess Myurin, too!”
“You’re exhausted, and you need to recover your holy power to get better. Don’t forget, you didn’t come here through the normal way. You crossed a dimension to get here. Do you even know what condition your body is in right now? Speaking as a doctor, if you don’t rest for at least a week, your entire body’s going to ache for
months
.”
“J-Just let me go! Please! I’m really scared!” In the end, she was left on the verge of tears, begging.
* * *
“Blooood...” Moving around in a dark room, someone’s crimson eyes gleamed. “I wanna drink Teacher’s blood!!!”
A boy, having reached the very end of his patience, yelled at the black-haired girl rolling dramatically on the floor, “Cut it out already! You’re seriously driving me insane! If you’re gonna be like this, just go back! Screw the contract, screw everything!! I don’t care anymore!”
“Shut up! You think I don’t wanna go back?! It’s not that easy! Just wait, I’m gonna rip out all of Milpieu’s hair when I get back, and leave her bald!”
“I thought you were a ‘great being’? What kind of ‘great being’ talks like that?” the boy argued.
“I don’t care! I don’t give a damn! Shouldn’t you be studying magic right now? I thought you wanted to change!”
“Yeah, well, your explanations are impossible to understand!”
Josiah shot up and stomped over, poking him in the forehead with her finger. “It’s advanced mana formation configuration! How do you not know this? Humans have brains for a reason—they’re supposed to think and calculate! Those hands of yours? They’re there to help your dumb brain work through formulas!”
“
Ughhh!
”
“Chimpanzee? Orangutan? Honestly, you’re so stupid I don’t even know how to describe you. How do you not get this? Even a deer would shake its head at your IQ.”
The boy fumed at her relentless verbal onslaught. “If everyone understood things just by looking at them once, like you’re saying, then every mage in the world would be an Archmage by now!”
“
Oh,
please. You think being an Archmage is easy? Every single spell formula I’ve given you so far is just the beginner level!”
“Then it’s the most insane beginner level I’ve ever seen! And you think I can suddenly study magic when I’ve never done it before?!”
They glared at each other, neither backing down.
“For someone like you, you’re so damn greedy! You sure do talk big about fixing everything and living like a decent person, when you’ve made so many mistakes!
Pfft.
How the hell did I even end up trapped by your summoning circle?”
“I swear, I’ll tell everyone you’re a vampire! That there’s a crazy one here!”
“Hate to break it to you, but I have plenty of ways to escape. You, on the other hand? You made a deal with a vampire, who’s a public enemy of the continent. You’ll be heading straight to the stake!”
“
Aaaahhh!!
”
Josiah just kept on going with her verbal onslaught. The boy had only desperately wished for help, and was left pulling at his hair in frustration at the result.
Meanwhile, Josiah just ignored him and started to whimper, “
Ugh.
Teacher... When are you coming? I just want one sip. Just one sip of blood, please...”
Determined to see Davey again, she had begun dabbling in contract summoning magic. Alas, she ended up being dragged into this world instead, drawn by the desperate wish of the boy before her.
Watching him angrily pull something out of his pocket and chew it, Josiah tilted her head. “Hey, what is that? It smells really annoying.”
“
Hmph.
Of course, you’d hate it, being a vampire. It’s called Sacred Grass. My family grows it in our territory, and I chew it sometimes when I get headaches.”
“Whatever, just put it away. I don’t like the smell of it.”
The very Sacred
Grass Davey had been searching for was, in fact, being cultivated by the boy’s family.
