Chapter 157

The Ruined World Was Mistaken for a Game-Chapter 105: Always Anew (1)

Translator: Dreamscribe
Our Creator God works too hard.
All the Heroes thought so.
The Creator God, Lee Jinwoo, was the one who opened a new era with the virtual reality game and was the owner of the world’s top company, FS Games. Honestly, even if he did not update the game for several years and only maintained its current state, there was no other game that could replace it. Even if that happened, the Heroes would feel regret, but they would still have continued to enjoy Arsilan Saga with enthusiasm.
Title: Creator God...
No! Why are you not bragging about it!
How could you just leave a notice!
You could brag about it for months straight!
I am really thankful... but every time I see the update notice every day, it’s scary...
I am level 72 and a Veteran Player, but... why do I still feel like a newbie?
Anonymous1 (KR): I check the update notice every week, and every time it’s like a heaping bowl of rice. In any other game, they would make a huge advertisement, but here it is always just one line of explanation.
└Anonymous2 (KR): For real, it’s announced like they just fixed a typo. But when you actually experience it, it’s on par with main content.
└ThatPlaceIsTheDirector: Ah, just eat it upㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Anonymous3 (DE): The Creator God is omnipotent!
HohoGamMan: Day 20 of hoping for a Morwen Affinity update.
└Anonymous4 (JP): You’re really consistent.
└HohoGamMan: Thank you.
However, the Creator God poured out such a bombardment of content that even Veteran Heroes had trouble keeping up. In front of that overwhelming amount, Veterans were left floundering like newbie Heroes.
‘Why only care for the veterans?’
‘Why only care for newbies?’
These conflicts were common in any game, but in Arsilan Saga, there was no Hero who asked such questions. This was because everyone was fed equally until they were stuffed.
“Wow, this update is crazy again.”
“Ugh! Long live the Creator God!”
"Screw the exams!"
“Ah... should I just drop out?”
Anya, who was attending a university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, shook her head at the sound of Arsilan’s common tongue coming from the dormitory.
She had started living in the dormitory of the world’s best science and engineering university, and almost all students had a Soul Link, and so did the professors.
Now, the Arsilan common tongue was heard more often than English in the dormitory. The Korean language courses offered at the university had incredible competition for enrollment. Even those who could freely use Arsilan’s common tongue still took Korean courses.
Korean was the Arsilan common tongue, but its intonation and nuance were different. Since there were many foreign Heroes in Arsilan, the intonation of Korean had changed quite a bit. Heroes called that awkward speech Arsilan dialect.
The language used by King Leon and the Arsilan people was perfect standard Korean. There was a strong perception that a Hero who used standard language was a “cultured Hero”.
Because of that, even those who could freely speak Arsilan’s common tongue were working hard to correct their speech and intonation.
“Has my pronunciation gotten better?”
“No. Your Arsilan dialect is too strong.”
“You’re bad too!”
“I’m speaking perfect standard language.”
The noisy dormitory quickly became quiet.
Anya entered her room. Her roommate was lying down wearing a Soul Link. All the students in the dormitory were like her roommate, wearing Soul Links and traveling to Arsilan.
“Hoo....”
In the silence that had settled over the dormitory, Anya let out a small sigh. She was also a Hero of Arsilan. Just a few months ago, she had been passionately adventuring. However, when Happy, the pet cat she had been with since childhood, passed away, she fell into grief and became lethargic.
It had been painful to watch as Happy’s life came to an end, suffering until the very last, and when Happy left the world, her heart felt hollow, as if a hole had been punched in it. The reason she left her home and entered the dormitory was because of that. She thought that if she left the house full of memories with Happy, she might be able to overcome it.
Perhaps thanks to that effort, she could now manage to get by.
“Ugh! Where did my nutrition block go?”
“Should I bring it to you?”
“Yes.”
When her roommate got up and looked for a nutrition block, she brought it over. After consuming the nutrition block and some water, and going to the bathroom, the roommate climbed back onto the bed.
“Didn’t you say you play Arsilan Saga too?”
“Yes, I’m just taking a little break.”
“Send me a message when you log in. Let’s play together.”
Anya chatted with her roommate for a moment.
After the Soul Link scanned her physical condition and a green light appeared signaling login approval, the roommate immediately left for Arsilan.
Anya quietly opened a drawer.
She stared at the Soul Link resting inside and then took it in her hand.
‘It’s about time to start again.’
Anya put on the Soul Link and logged into Arsilan Saga. Evanth had changed a lot. It was much larger now and bustling with Heroes.
“Oh?”
Anya looked at a newbie Hero wearing a kindergarten hat. Next to the newbie Hero, a small puppy was running around. The puppy, walking ahead, seemed to spot something and barked toward the front.
A Horned Rabbit, startled from hiding, leaped out, and the newbie Hero swung their sword.
Squeak!
The Horned Rabbit vanished, dropping a junk item.
The puppy happily ran around before placing its front paw on the junk item. At that moment, the item was automatically stored.
“Good job!”
The newbie Hero hugged the puppy tightly and rubbed their face against it.
Not only the newbie Hero, but every Hero nearby had at least one pet.
Anya approached the newbie Hero.
“Um....”
“Yes?”
“Your puppy... it’s cute.”
The newbie Hero smiled brightly and showed off the puppy.
“Hehe, after hunting Horned Rabbits together, I got the ‘Mob Detection’ trait! They say it’s a rare trait!”
The newbie Hero boasted about their pet.
It was said that the longer you spent time together, the more the pet would grow into a suitable partner for the Hero. The newbie Hero explained that you could get a pet by purchasing an egg from the Platinum Coin Shop and hatching it.
Anya went to the Platinum Coin Shop in Solis.
The shop displayed a variety of paid goods, and on one side, there were eggs on display. Attached in front of each egg was a picture showing what the pet would look like, and they were all adorable.
“So cute!”
“Long live the Creator God!”
Heroes stood in line to purchase pet eggs. Anya simply watched them.
“You seem to have a lot on your mind.”
Hearing a sudden voice beside her, Anya flinched and turned to look. At some point, Helby was standing next to her.
“Helby nim....”
“NanAnya. It’s been a while.”
Her Hero name was NanAnya. She had been a founding member of the Helby Lovers Group, but since she had not logged into Arsilan Saga for a long time, she had been automatically removed.
“I... I’m sorry.”
“What for?”
“For not coming by for a while....”
Helby looked into her eyes. Helby’s gaze was still as beautiful as starlight in the night sky.
“Follow me.”
“Yes?”
Helby walked ahead.
When Anya did not follow and just stood still, Helby’s tail grabbed her by the collar and dragged her along. Helby took her to Helby’s room.
The waiting Hellhound immediately served tea.
“It’s been a while. You can rejoin the Helby Lovers Group anytime, so just let me know.”
“Thank you. Oh? Hellhound nim, you had your second class change?”
Hellhound nodded with a face full of pride. Above Hellhound’s head was the title that only Heroes who had undergone a second class change could display.
“Yes, and it’s even a hidden class.”
“Oh, what class is it?”
Hellhound smirked and stood behind Helby.
“Butler.”
“What?”
“I changed class to become Helby nim’s butler.”
Now that she looked closely, Hellhound was wearing a butler uniform. When Helby snapped her fingers, as if waiting for the cue, Hellhound brought over a dessert.
“These are freshly made macarons. They’re based on sugar and spices made from fruits brought across the desert.”
“Hm.”
“I’ve also prepared coffee paired with the aroma.”
Helby nodded as if used to it.
“Hellhound nim, did you make these yourself?”
“Of course. I handle everything, cleaning, laundry, cooking, clothing production, errands. That’s what a butler does.”
“Ah....”
So that’s what a butler is.
This was practically slavery...
Anya quickly shook her head to erase the thought that came to mind.
In any case, it was still a hidden class.
The figure of Hellhound, having finished his task, faded and disappeared. He was waiting in the darkness so he could appear at Helby’s call at any moment.
“Drink.”
Helby said this and sipped her coffee. Anya picked up her teacup and took a sip. The warm aroma spread through her whole body, filling her heart with comfort.
“In truth....”
Anya began to tell her story.
It was forbidden to speak in detail about the Heroes’ world, and there were filters in place, but a story like this was fine. Moreover, Helby and the key Arsilan figures entrusted with major missions were free from such filtering.
“He must have lived a happy life before leaving.”
“Do you think so?”
“Among the things that make up a soul are memories and feelings. It may sound cliche, but as long as you remember, that child will remain with your soul.”
Helby spoke with unusual gentleness.
Helby looked at Anya’s soul. Inside her soul was mixed the form of a black cat.
[Are you worried?]
Meow.
When Helby asked, the cat let out a quiet cry.
In the Heroes’ world, that soul had not dispersed but had stayed by Anya’s side. Comforting its grieving owner, it had merged into her soul and followed her all the way to Arsilan.
When the Archmage was told about it, he had been quite surprised.
“I will recommend this egg to you.”
Helby stretched out her hand, and an egg slightly larger than her palm appeared.
“While recalling your memories, keep that egg close to you for a week.”
The newly updated pets had 32 forms. On top of that, you could change the color, patterns, and even fur length, allowing for highly personalized pets.
However, the most expensive of them all, the “Hero’s Egg” revealed nothing about its form or nature. This was because when a Hero kept it close, it would reflect their memories and wishes, creating the form they desired most. Other eggs would hatch immediately upon purchase, but the Hero’s Egg had to be carried for a week.
Anya looked at the egg and then nodded.
“How much is it?”
“Ten Platinum Coins.”
As soon as Helby finished speaking, Hellhound reappeared beside her.
“I’ll give it to you as a return gift.”
“Hellhound nim....”
“I make good money, you know. My channel already has five million subscribers. When I stream, the donations just pour in.”
It was the “Helby nim’s Butler” channel.
By subscribing, viewers could see Helby’s beautiful appearance. Seeing Helby and Hellhound together, Anya’s eyes grew moist.
“Thank you.”
Helby smirked at the sight of Anya’s tears.
“Stop sniffling. If you’ve finished everything, go now.”
“I haven’t even taken a bite yet!”
Anya chatted with Helby for a while longer. Talking like this made her able to smile again, just like before. Anya left the Platinum Coin Shop holding the egg.
[??] Hero’s Egg
If you carry it carefully for a week, a pet in your desired form may be born. It is nearly impossible to break, so don’t worry and keep it with you!
Anya put the Hero’s Egg in her front pocket.
She saw quite a few other Heroes carrying eggs just like hers. Since only one day had passed, no one had hatched a Hero’s Egg yet.
“Hehe, refreshing, right?”
“This is Solis.”
“Huhu! Elizabeth! Grow up healthy!”
Some Heroes were polishing their eggs, while others were showing Solis to their eggs.
Everyone was showing devoted care. Anya carried her egg and spoke to it from time to time, recalling her memories with Happy.
Anya spent the next few days traveling with the egg through cities and villages. Since it had been so long since she had logged in, there was so much new content that it was fun just to look around.
“We will now be conducting a trial run from Solis to the Magic Barrier!”
A train station had been built in front of Solis.
The trial run went from Solis Station to the Desert Port Station.
‘Shall I go to the Romance Domain?’
Anya boarded the train and took a seat.
The interior of the train was antique. Filled with Arsilan-style designs, it brought to mind fantasy movies set in Britain with wizards.
As it had been built mainly for cargo transport, there were not many seats.
“Oh, it’s pretty fast?”
“Yeah.”
“Nice scenery! This is what a train trip should be!”
The Heroes chatted as they looked out the window.
If she had traveled via the Hero’s Flower, she could have arrived at the Desert Port immediately, but quite a number of Heroes still chose to take the train.
It was because there was romance in it!
The train passed through the Magic Barrier and stopped in front of the Desert Port. Several buildings had been constructed there, and the port was full of ships.
Anya bought a single room ticket and boarded a passenger ship.
It was not exactly a luxury cruise liner, but it had various facilities.
“It’s nice that there’s a window, too.”
Her room had a large window, allowing her to view the desert. Anya never let the egg leave her side. Even when sleeping, she kept it close, and when the passenger ship stopped briefly at an oasis, she carried it with her.
After a week had passed, the egg began to change.
Anya carefully took out the egg and placed it on the desk in her room.
[The Hero’s Egg, filled with your devotion and love, is about to hatch.]
Crackle!
Light burst from the egg, and cracks began to form on its surface. Anya did not blink even once as she watched.
The cracks gradually spread across the whole egg, until it broke apart completely.
Swoosh!
Something rose from within the egg.
It was a kitten.
“Oh?”
Flap flap!
Anya stared at the kitten floating in the air. Its appearance was identical to Happy’s when Happy had been young. The only difference was the pair of white wings on its back. Fluttering its wings, it flew around her before landing in her arms.
Meow.
Even the cry was the same.
It was as if Happy had come back to life. It felt like Happy had left behind a fragment of itself before passing away. Even though she knew this was a game world and not real, tears poured down her face.
The black kitten looked at her, then licked away her tears and patted her cheek with its front paw.
[Your precious partner has been born! Please choose a name.]
Anya gazed at the kitten.
The kitten stared right back at her.
“How about Charlotte?”
Shake shake.
The kitten shook its head.
“Then, Elizabeth?”
The kitten looked at her with an exasperated expression, then tapped the floor with its front paw. It meowed once as if to say its name had already been decided and looked back at her.
“...Happy?”
Anya hesitated before saying the name aloud.
Meow.
The kitten, Happy, snuggled back into her arms. Anya’s eyes grew red again, and she burst into tears.
"Waaah!"
She cried while rubbing her face against Happy.
Happy pushed her face away with its front paw.
“Why?”
When Anya tried to press her face in again, it batted her mouth with its paw.
She suddenly remembered the food she had just eaten.
“Is it my breath?”
Nod!
When Happy nodded, Anya was deeply moved.
Just like when choosing its name, Happy was clearly expressing its thoughts!
“Come here!”
When Anya reached out to grab Happy, it fluttered its wings and dodged her. Pretending to sulk, Anya crouched on the floor.
Sigh.
Happy let out a small sigh, then settled down on top of her head. It patted her head as if to say, “I’ll take good care of you from now on!”
***
The pet update was met with great praise.
Unlike the simple pets in other games that just followed you around picking up items, this was a true partner who grew alongside the Hero, building memories together. Some Heroes even said it was the best content added in Episode 3.
Jinwoo had put considerable care into creating the Hero’s Egg.
He set the will of a Slime to match the Hero’s memories, recollections, and personality, then created a suitable body for it to inhabit.
'A companion....'
After receiving contact from Helby, Jinwoo investigated the matter in detail.
If a pet truly cherished and loved its owner, even after death, it would not leave their side but remain with them. The soul would blend into the owner’s soul, quietly becoming a source of strength.
Jinwoo had engraved a magic formula so that the soul of a pet could naturally dwell within the Hero’s Egg over the course of a week. Once the soul had settled, it would absorb the will of Slime, becoming smarter and gaining various abilities.
“Comfortable nim! Come look at our pretty Dali!”
Haebyul called out to Jinwoo.
When Jinwoo looked at her, the white rabbit in front of Haebyul began to dance. Haebyul had taught her pet, Dali, the Haebyul Bunny dance.
-Cute.
-Dali looks like Haebyul’s cloneㅋㅋㅋ
-Worth carrying it around so devotedly for a week.
-My pet hatches today too, I’m nervous.
-I got an octopus. Maybe because I’m bald....
Dali’s wiggling hips were adorable. Haebyul’s viewers could not take their eyes off the scene, and even passing Heroes stopped to record videos.
Haebyul had groomed Dali’s fur to a glossy shine at a paid pet shop and had bought cute clothes for it as well.
When a “Pet Showcase Board” appeared on Arsilan Worlds, Heroes began spending Platinum Coins and Arsilan Gold generously to decorate and show off their pets.
Jinwoo nodded as he watched Dali.
“It’s cute.”
“I also taught it the Comfortable nim version.”
“What?”
When Dali proudly performed the Comfortable Bunny dance, Jinwoo squeezed his eyes shut.
-Comfortable Bunnnnnny ㅋㅋㅋ
-Still cute when Dali does it.
Haebyul looked at Jinwoo as if seeing a comrade. Ever since Dali had danced the Comfortable Bunny, Jinwoo had become her dance partner.
“But Comfortable nim, what do you think a summoned creature will be like? I heard if you get a Summoning Stone, a quest pops up.”
“Well, I can’t say for sure, but....”
The Summoning Stone was modeled after Ella’s authority and had been found in Baron Salon’s warehouse. Fragments were scattered all across the Empire of Evil, and Jinwoo could not retrieve them all by himself. So, he had set it up so that countless Heroes could be dispatched to find them.
“It sounds like it’ll be fun.”
“Right?”
At Jinwoo’s words, Haebyul smiled.
Not only Romance Heroes, but also all the Heroes logged into Arsilan Saga were full of anticipation.
‘You can look forward to it.’
This time, it was going to be incredibly fun too!
