Chapter 451: Chapter 401: Digging a Hole is Easy
Zhuo Yuqing found the tie at the bottom of her box, which she had bought but never found the right opportunity to give it to him. Actually, she was also embarrassed, wondering if giving him something out of the blue might seem too direct.
Early the next day, when Zhuo Yuqing woke up, Bai Chengxi had already gone out for a run. He was in the habit of exercising early in the morning, running for at least an hour every day.
Zhuo Yuqing went to the kitchen and made the simplest bread and milk breakfast. Just as she had set the breakfast on the table, Bai Chengxi came back. He was wearing a thin, grey sports suit with the hood pulled over his head, which at a glance made him look like a 17- or 18-year-old youth.
"Up so early?" Bai Chengxi took off his hood, revealing his hair soaked with sweat, with fine beads of sweat on his forehead. Far from looking sloppy, it instead gave him a masculine charm.
"You go shower first, and I’ll fry a couple of eggs," Zhuo Yuqing rolled up her sleeves.
Bai Chengxi looked at her skeptically and finally sighed lightly, "Don’t bother, this will do."
In a while, she might turn the kitchen upside down again, which wasn’t the main concern. The real issue was that every time she entered the kitchen, she was bound to get hurt—either burned or cut — and he was at his wit’s end with her.
Clearly, Zhuo Yuqing felt snubbed. She cocked her arm holding a spatula, "This time I’ll make sure to impress you."
On the table, there really were two fried eggs, although their appearance wasn’t great, twisted and misshapen, looking like a painter had spilled yellow ink, but they were still recognizably eggs.
Bai Chengxi sat down, glanced at the fried eggs and then at Zhuo Yuqing who was looking forward expectantly, "Try it."
Bai Chengxi picked up his chopsticks, took a piece of the fried egg, and bit down—bland, not salty, just...
Crack.
He spit out a piece of hard eggshell, his eyes filled with a resigned helplessness, "Did you accidentally throw in the shell as well?"
"Did I?" Zhuo Yuqing hurriedly brought the plate of eggs to her and poked around with chopsticks. Indeed, she saw a few pieces of broken eggshell. She bit one of her fingers, feeling annoyed and looking guilty, "I was really careful, how did the shell still end up in there?"
"Stop eating, you’ll damage your teeth." Bai Chengxi gathered up the plate in front of her, stood up, and threw it into the kitchen trash can. On bowing his head, he saw a pile of broken eggs in the trash, all mixed up with shell and egg white.
Bai Chengxi couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time—this girl really had no natural talent for cooking. She couldn’t even crack eggs properly.
But no matter, he had never intended for her to cook in the first place. Her only job was to eat.
Bai Chengxi quickly fried two sunny-side-up eggs and brought them to the table. Zhuo Yuqing, seeing the perfectly round eggs that looked like the sun, felt a sudden sense of embarrassment compared to her own messy attempts.
However, she was already used to being a culinary idiot in front of Chef Bai. She quickly forgot about her earlier failure and ate her breakfast with satisfaction.
Right after breakfast, a phone call from Madam Bai followed. The old lady wanted them to return to the Bai Family mansion early.
Bai Chengxi was dressing in front of the mirror, and after he put on his suit, he was looking for a suitable tie. As soon as he turned around, he saw Zhuo Yuqing standing sneakily behind him. He was fastening his cufflinks and looked puzzledly at her, "What’s wrong? Aren’t you going to change?"
Zhuo Yuqing’s hands were hidden behind her, her big black-and-white eyes shifting around. Under his bemused gaze, she shyly brought her hands from behind her back, "This is for you."
In her fair hand lay a delicate little box.
Bai Chengxi didn’t expect to receive a gift and felt a tiny surge of joy. It had been a long time since he felt this small anticipation upon receiving a gift.
He opened the box to find a diagonal-striped navy blue tie, which, by a happy coincidence, matched the shirt he was wearing that day, as if they were made to be a set.
"Do you like it?" Zhuo Yuqing was giving him a gift for the first time and couldn’t help feeling nervous, afraid he would find it unacceptable.
"I like it." Bai Chengxi unwrapped the tie right away, "Can you tie a tie?"
"A little, but not too well."
"Then help me," Bai Chengxi handed her the tie.
Zhuo Yuqing had learned some tying techniques back in school because she planned to give Tang Tianyou a tie as a birthday gift and wanted to tie it for him herself.
But Tang Tianyou abruptly went to France, and her gift went unbought, so naturally, she never had the chance to tie it for him. However, the skills she learned at that time were still very clear in her memory.
"Am I doing it right?" Zhuo Yuqing was focused on the task for the first time, a little nervous inside. Bai Chengxi was always particular about details, not the sort to overlook things, which meant he strived for perfection even in his attire.
While the old lady was using the restroom, Zhuo Yuqing quickly made her way to the kitchen where the dumplings were ready and being boiled.
Mrs. Bai saw her and said with a smile, "We’re all family here, no need to be embarrassed."
Bai Chengxi, who was getting bowls, glanced at her somewhat cramped face and said in a voice neither loud nor low, "If you’re free, go help dad with the couplets, be his assistant."
"Alright," Zhuo Yuqing gladly accepted the task and scurried off to help Mr. Bai.
Mr. Bai was sticking the couplets beside the door and said when he saw her, "Help me see if it’s crooked."
Zhuo Yuqing quickly stood in position behind him, looked carefully, and said, "A little more to the right."
"Like this?"
"A bit more to the right."
After Mr. Bai finished sticking the couplets and the character for fortune, Zhuo Yuqing handed him the tools.
"Yuqing, when you have time, let’s schedule a visit to your parents in City A," Mr. Bai suggested as he stepped down from the chair, and Zhuo Yuqing hurried to assist him.
At his words, she immediately felt guilty. She had yet to inform her own family, worried her parents wouldn’t agree, which could result in an awkward situation for the Bai Family.
Alas, digging a hole is easy, filling it is hard.
