Chapter 480: Chapter 427 Originally
The call connected quickly, and Su Yingluo’s voice came through, sounding both excited and incredulous: "Chengxi? You’ve finally decided to call me,"
"I don’t care how you treat me, just don’t go after Zhuo Yuqing, otherwise, I will make you understand the consequences." Bai Chengxi had no intention of listening to her further and ruthlessly cut her off, "That’s all I have to say, you know what you should do."
Su Yingluo wanted to say more, but the line went dead with a beep. He didn’t give her any chance to explain or argue; he blocked all her ways out.
It was all for another woman.
"Bai Chengxi, how can you treat me like this?"
And the hope that had always been growing in her heart shattered just like the screen before her.
She never imagined she would see such a day,
She couldn’t accept it, she wasn’t willing to give up.
~
Zhuo Yuqing was watching a costume drama where the male lead was caught dining with his ex-girlfriend by his current girlfriend, leading to a huge quarrel between the two women, creating a messy scene.
Bai Chengxi sat down beside her, seeing her consumed with interest, he peeled an orange wedge and offered it to her mouth: "Is it that interesting?"
"Pretty interesting." Zhuo Yuqing opened her mouth to take the orange, her eyes still fixed on the TV, and she muttered unintentionally: "I don’t like this male lead, always keeping his options open. The current girlfriend has already tolerated so much, yet he doesn’t change. If it were me, I would have kicked him out long ago."
Bai Chengxi’s action of peeling the orange stiffened as he watched her indignant expression, suddenly losing the courage to speak.
Would she kick him away if she knew?
"Actually, this male lead still loves the current girlfriend." Bai Chengxi glanced at the TV, "Maybe it’s just that his ex-girlfriend keeps bothering him."
"That’s because the male lead gives the ex-girlfriend opportunities. If he was heartless, the ex-girlfriend couldn’t stir any trouble." Zhuo Yuqing suddenly turned her head toward him, sizing him up for a while, that gaze made Bai Chengxi very uncomfortable, as if she was seeing right through him, leading to her saying: "Don’t speak for him just because he’s a man."
Bai Chengxi: "..."
So that’s what she thought, he was overthinking it.
Bai Chengxi peeled the orange completely, feeding it to her segment by segment: "How much longer till the show ends?"
"The first episode just ended, there’s one more." "If you find it boring, I can watch on the tablet, and you can watch a game."
"No worries, I’ll watch with you."
Zhuo Yuqing knew although he was involved in producing TV shows, he was not interested in these melodramatic dramas; he preferred watching sports.
"If you get bored, you can look at your phone." Zhuo Yuqing curled her legs up and leaned against him, reaching for a slice of orange to place by his mouth.
Bai Chengxi opened his mouth to eat it, not looking at his phone, "Can’t be distracted, you first tell me, what are these people’s relationships?"
Zhuo Yuqing immediately began explaining with enthusiasm, gesticulating as she got excited.
"Really?" Zhuo Yuqing blinked, excitedly saying: "I’ve been wanting to know the ending, but the TV and the internet are updated simultaneously, it’s only reached the twenties now."
"In the future, just tell me whatever drama you want to watch, you can see even those that haven’t aired yet."
Zhuo Yuqing beamed like a child, "Having a husband in the entertainment industry sure has its perks."
Hearing this, Bai Chengxi’s gaze suddenly sharpened, as though tinted with thick ink, deep and bottomless, he slightly turned his body, "What did you just say?"
"Huh?" Zhuo Yuqing, still indulging in the orange, looked at him with a face full of confusion, "Say what?"
"That sentence just now." Bai Chengxi’s gaze was intense.
"Nice benefits." Zhuo Yuqing swallowed the orange and blinked twice.
"The first half of the sentence." Bai Chengxi emphasized.
Zhuo Yuqing suddenly realized what she had blurted out unintentionally, her face instantly flushed red, wishing she could crawl into the couch cushions and sew herself in.
She had merely spoken those two words impulsively, not expecting him to take it to heart.
"I didn’t say anything." Zhuo Yuqing felt too embarrassed to stay, blushed to her ears, and got up to leave.
She hadn’t gone far when she was embraced from the front and then lifted off the ground in a princess carry, alarming her enough to hurriedly wrap her arms around Bai Chengxi’s neck: "What are you doing?"
"Going back to the room to watch TV." His voice was warm yet slightly hoarse.
As a result... naturally, they didn’t end up watching much of the TV drama.
However, the next day, Zhuo Yuqing received an email, which was the full version of the TV drama she watched the night before, a forty-episode series where only twenty episodes were broadcast on TV and online, yet she got to see it first. Excited and also moved, she thought Bai Chengxi was just talking, but he actually did it. She liked this type of man, who doesn’t just pay lip service to make girls happy but follows through with action.
Zhuo Yuqing copied the drama series onto a USB drive, planning to enjoy it thoroughly at home.
"Yuqing, Su Yingluo’s interview is scheduled for the afternoon, get ready," the editor hurried over to instruct, "I’ve looked over the you prepared, just ask according to it. Oh, try to probe into her recent romantic situation, Su Yingluo has hardly been rumored with any man in this circle, everyone is curious about her love life."
"Understood, editor." Zhuo Yuqing was actually a bit nervous; it was her first time interviewing such a big star. The biggest name she had interviewed before was Xixiao, who seemed to have disappeared from the public eye lately, hardly releasing any statements. With her keen sense for entertainment news, Zhuo Yuqing suspected Xixiao might have been shelved by Star Motion, though the reason was unknown.
After lunch, Zhuo Yuqing and Liu Lian were making coffee in the pantry. They arrived early and were sitting in the corner looking at their phones when a few people entered, probably not noticing people were still there. They grabbed snacks from the shelf and sat around the table.
"Did you guys hear a piece of news today?" One female colleague lowered her voice, looking excited.
"What news?" The other two eagerly joined in the gossip, "Sounds mysterious."
"It’s about one of our colleagues, the one who’s been making headlines recently."
Zhuo Yuqing and Liu Lian sitting at the corner glanced at each other without speaking; they were just behind a wall, which if unnoticed, made them hard to spot from outside.
Lately, it was Zhuo Yuqing who had been grabbing the headlines. She couldn’t help but prick up her ears.
"Do you know how she’s been getting those headlines?" The female colleague’s voice dropped even lower, almost whispering,
Upon hearing this, Liu Lian abruptly stood up, fists clenched in anger, those women were simply talking nonsense.
Zhuo Yuqing was also furious but held Liu Lian back, wanting to hear more of what they would say.
"No way? She looks so innocent, she would do that sort of thing?" A colleague questioned.
"You don’t get it, what type of woman hasn’t the boss of Star Motion seen? Maybe he just likes it that way, alas, that’s a pretty lucrative deal, getting protection from such a big backing, just giving out a piece of news is enough for a month, sleeping a few nights isn’t a big loss."
"You make it sound quite reasonable, she’s been at the magazine for over a year now, already overshadowing the top sister Tong Bi. If it’s not by improper means, how could she manage so effortlessly? Just listen to what they are saying, not a single nice word."
Zhuo Yuqing was fuming, knowing how words can sometimes cut deeper and more directly than swords. Therefore, she never ed on unfounded news, needing genuine evidence for everything.
"Arguing with them is useless, it won’t shut their mouths. Now explaining it would only make things cloudier, who would believe us? Besides, these messages also indeed involve Bai Chengxi." Zhuo Yuqing clenched her fists, "The news I used to chase, now might all be linked with Bai Chengxi. Releasing such messages now is probably intended to prevent me from competing for the deputy editor position."
"It must be Tong Bi, that wench spreading false news, I’ll confront her," Liu Lian pulled up her sleeves, ready to fight.
"Empty words prove nothing, what can you do to her? If you really start fighting, you might even get disciplined by the higher-ups, can’t even secure your job."
"So we just let her spout nonsense?"
"Focus on the interview this afternoon first, we’ll deal with the other matters later. People like her won’t thrive for long."
