Chapter 549: Chapter 482: Not This Material
Mu Chenxi suddenly became a different person. She was no longer obsessed with various comic books, and she didn’t let her mind wander in class anymore. As soon as school was over, she would run to the school’s laboratory and stay there for hours on end.
The school’s laboratory was strictly managed, with thorough checks and paperwork required for entry and exit— it was not a place just anyone could casually use. To have free access every day, Mu Chenxi gave gifts to the teachers managing the lab, and as a result, she could slip in with just a greeting each time.
The first step of the experiment Luo Shangqing wanted to complete was cell cultivation; only by successfully cultivating living cells could one take the first step towards success.
In addition to referring to the materials provided by Luo Shangqing, she spent most of her time immersed in the library searching for books on all sorts of topics. Within a week, she had compiled a notebook thick with notes.
"Wow, our youngest sister has really been slaving away," Susu said as if she had discovered a new continent, pinching Mu Chenxi’s recently thinned face: "Spending all day in the library and laboratory, one would think you’re possessed by something."
Mu Chenxi hastily shoveled instant noodles into her mouth, waving Susu’s hand away in disgust: "Boss, don’t disturb my meal. I have to check if the cells I’ve been cultivating are alive soon. It’s already the third day, and by my calculations, they should be viable."
"Youngest sis, it’s good you’re working so hard, but you also need to take care of your health. Instant noodles are the least nutritious, and you’re eating them every day; is that really okay?"
"It’s fine, it’s a good opportunity to lose weight," Mu Chenxi wiped her mouth with a napkin, "Boss, please help me throw away the noodle box. I need to get to the lab."
"Got it, get going."
Even Mu Chenxi’s walk seemed as if she had wheels of wind and fire beneath her feet. When she rushed to the lab and opened the culture vessel, she found that all the cells she had painstakingly cultured were dead.
Mu Chenxi inhaled sharply, looking somewhat disheartened as she held the vessel. This was the third failure, and there were no signs of success at all. She had read so many books and followed their instructions precisely—why did she still fail?
"Someone’s here." A voice from outside said, "Why is someone here so early?"
Mu Chenxi wiped her nose and turned back to see two girls, one of whom she recognized as Qiao Tong, a top student from the medical faculty.
After glancing at Mu Chenxi, Qiao Tong put down her bag and remarked: "The entrance of this laboratory is getting more and more open—anyone can just walk in. I will have to have a serious talk with Professor Tao later."
Mu Chenxi furrowed her brows; there were only three of them there, and this remark was obviously aimed at her.
"Who says the lab is your private property?" snorted Mu Chenxi. "If you want peace and quiet, come in the middle of the night."
Qiao Tong’s phoenix eyes narrowed, "I know you, you’re that Mu... Mu what from class three. As far as I know, you nearly failed and got demoted. What sudden interest do you have in coming to a place like the lab?"
"Can’t remember my name? Call me Lord Mu next time we meet," Mu Chenxi said dismissively, lowering her head to continue her work and ignoring the two of them.
"Hey, why are you so rude with your words?"
"Mind your own mouth first."
The three of them quickly started arguing back and forth until the laboratory manager walked in and said discontentedly, "If you cannot keep quiet, then leave the lab right now. This place is for experiments, not for your bickering."
Mu Chenxi didn’t say anything, and the other two fell silent as well. Everyone got back to their business.
After Mu Chenxi finally managed to culture the new cells, she packed up her things and left the laboratory, making sure to lock her experimental cabinet before leaving.
As soon as Mu Chenxi left, the girl who came with Qiao Tong curiously peered into the cabinet she had used. Through the glass, she saw a row of small characters on the experimental vessel and hurriedly called out: "Qiao Tong, come look! She’s doing the same experiment as you."
Qiao Tong stopped what she was doing and walked over. She frowned slightly upon seeing Mu Chenxi’s vessel.
"Qiao Tong, do you think she also wants to be Professor Luo’s assistant? Otherwise, why would she be doing this experiment?"
Qiao Tong scoffed disdainfully, "With that cultivation method of hers, it’ll be ages before she succeeds. Plus, she doesn’t weigh her own abilities; how could such a poor student even be worthy to assist Professor Luo?"
"Exactly, Professor Luo needs talented people like you who can help him, not such idiots."
