Chapter 590: Chapter 515: Nan Zhan Arc
Xinghai Square, bordered by the ocean, attracts tens of thousands of tourists every day to visit and play.
Jian Si did good business today. The portrait she is working on is almost finished, but the little boy sitting opposite is beginning to misbehave, scratching his head and kicking his legs.
"Sis, are you done yet?" the little boy urged.
"Done." Jian Si turned her sketchpad to him, asking with a smile, "Does it look like you?"
"Yes, it’s spot on, like it’s taken with a camera." Both the little boy and his mother were pleased. They paid the money, took the portrait, and left cheerfully.
After pocketing the money, Jian Si prepared a new sheet of paper and pencils. A new customer had already taken a seat. She looked up; it was a plainly dressed man who looked to be in his mid-thirties, but the beard made him seem much older.
As soon as the man sat down, he urged, "Draw quickly, don’t make it too big, it’s inconvenient to carry."
Jian Si drew a horizontal line in the middle of the paper, "Is this size okay?"
"Hmm." The man nodded, then stopped looking at her, his gaze cast downwards, half-closed eyes focused elsewhere.
While holding a pencil, Jian Si sized him up and began to sketch. After a while, she reached for her shirt pocket and apologized, "Sorry, I need to take a call."
The man saw her take out her phone and instinctively frowned.
"It’s my boyfriend; he’s coming to pick me up soon." Jian Si rushed to explain, "Sorry, just a moment, please."
The man was displeased, but hearing it was her boyfriend, he managed to contain himself and continued to look down.
Jian Si glanced at him and quickly pressed a speed-dial button. Soon, the phone connected, and a languid voice, as if just awakened, came from the other end, "Hello, Sisi?"
"I’m at Xinghai Square. Take the number 21 bus here. Oh, and buy me a burger at the KFC beside the statue after you get off; I’m hungry. Alright, I still have a customer, bye."
"What? Sisi, what are you talking about?"
Jian Si hung up the phone, apologized again, and continued with her sketching.
"Aren’t you done yet? Why is it taking so long?" the man asked impatiently.
"Almost done, almost done, haste makes waste, you know," Jian Si replied with her usual friendly smile, chatting with him while she painted, "Big brother, you’re not from Aus City, are you?"
"Hmm." The man clearly had no interest in chatting, his gaze still fixed on the green tiles on the ground.
"Is it done yet?" the man urged again, showing impatience on his face.
Jian Si put down her pencil and said with a smile, "Done. What do you think, does it look like you?" She turned the sketchpad around.
The man’s eyes lit up; he was apparently very satisfied with her work and reached out to pay.
"Big brother, could you check if this part needs changing?" Jian Si suddenly pointed to the area around the eyebrow, "Is it a bit too low?"
The man paused while reaching for his money, bent over to look, and as he concentrated, someone suddenly grabbed his arm from behind. Then a pair of cold handcuffs were snapped onto his wrists. He tried to struggle, but he was firmly pinned to the ground.
The person who had restrained the man gave his hands a pat, handed him over to two plainclothes colleagues to take away, then hopped in front of Jian Si and asked with concern, "You alright?"
"I’m fine." Jian Si shook her head, smiling, "Your moves seem to be getting sharper, huh?"
"So, have you decided to be my girlfriend yet? Based on my nimble moves," he teased, a playful and dissolute look in his clear features.
"Nan Yu, cut it out. Go back to your police station," Jian Si seemed used to his jesting, sat back on her little folding chair, and started to pack up her tools.
The sketch that had just been completed was still unretrieved. Nan Yu picked it up and couldn’t help admiring, "Our Sisi’s drawing skills are really becoming more and more impressive. When did you realize he was the fugitive wanted online?"
"And how did you know I was signaling for you to come make an arrest?" Jian Si pulled the drawing out of his hands.
"Simple. Xinghai Square doesn’t have a number 21 bus route. You were talking nonsense with eyes wide open, indicating you weren’t able to speak freely. And there’s no KFC beside the statue; you meant you were by the sculpture in Xinghai Square. Combining previous experience, it’s not hard to understand; you’ve spotted another criminal," Nan Yu glanced at the sports statue not far away, depicting a man’s vigorous stride.
Jian Si packed up her tools, preparing to go home. She folded her sketchboard and smiled at him, "Officer Nan’s intelligence is truly unmatched; I am impressed."
