Chapter 607: Chapter 527 I’m Very Expensive
Jian Hedong’s house is located on the second floor; there is a step-up platform leading from the first floor to the second. It was probably from this spot that Nan Zhan had overheard their conversation earlier.
Nan Zhan slowly ascended the steps, casting a glance at Jian Si who was smiling like a child, he snorted inwardly. Did she think he was provoked by her reverse psychology? He only thought she was pitiable, likely to be bullied by unscrupulous lawyers. After all, she was now his person, no, his client.
"Who are you?" Li Ronghua, upon seeing the tall man who suddenly appeared in this cramped space, thought he was just a nosy passerby, given his handsome appearance and first-rate demeanor.
Standing next to her, Lawyer Liu thought he saw a familiar face in Nan Zhan, but he quickly dismissed the thought, distinguishing this man from the one he was thinking of. It couldn’t be, he must have been seeing things or maybe they just looked alike.
"I am Mr. Jian’s representing lawyer." Nan Zhan was still wearing glasses today, making him look somewhat scholarly. Jian Si knew he didn’t have nearsightedness; wearing glasses was just to make himself seem more approachable – a notion she could only describe as childish.
However, on the way here, she had only briefly mentioned her uncle’s situation to him. She did not expect that he would be able to align everyone to their roles without needing further questions, a feat that greatly impressed her.
"Hmm, didn’t expect you to have hired a lawyer." Li Ronghua sneered slightly.
Jian Hedong was also surprised that Jian Si had brought a lawyer for him. He merely wanted some consultation; he couldn’t afford a lawyer. However, encouraged by Jian Si’s reassuring glance, he lifted his head and steadied himself.
Lawyer Liu stated, "It seems your intention is to settle this in court?"
Nan Zhan was puzzled, "Is there still a need for reconciliation?"
Hearing this, Li Ronghua subtly tugged at Lawyer Liu’s sleeve, who quickly said, "You are clearly in the wrong here; taking this to court won’t alter the outcome. Litigation is costly, particularly concerning real estate. You should think it through carefully."
"In that case, let’s talk." Nan Zhan looked at Li Ronghua, "I have a question for Ms. Li. You said that many years ago, you had given Mr. Jian a sum of money for the house. Is that true?"
"Of course," Li Ronghua affirmed hastily, "I had a clear agreement with Jian Hedong back then, giving him that money for the house, which should hence be mine. He agreed at that time too. That money was from my savings before we started living together, and had nothing to do with him."
Lawyer Liu with a glance signaled her not to talk too much, but Li Ronghua, being impetuous, naturally couldn’t control her words.
"Do you remember the exact date?"
"I remember, it was July 1st, on Jian Hedong’s birthday. I remember it very clearly."
"Which year was it? According to Mr. Jian, you only started living together in 1998. Was it in 1998?"
"Yes, it was 1998, that was when we started our relationship. I trusted him enough to give him the money. I had no idea he would become so ungrateful," Li Ronghua said, glaring at Jian Hedong with a puff of anger.
"In 1998, a global economic crisis occurred, and the economy of Quanao City was sluggish that year, with stocks plummeting. Ms. Li, you had invested all your money in the stock market back then; how could you have such a large sum available?" Nan Zhan said, gazing into her eyes which seemed to pierce through her defenses, making Li Ronghua instinctively shrink back.
"I think this is not the place for discussion. If you have questions for my client, I can answer on her behalf." Lawyer Liu, fearing Li Ronghua might misspeak, quickly intervened.
Nan Zhan did not ask further but instead said to Jian Si and Jian Hedong, "Let’s go."
It seemed the main issue hadn’t been addressed yet, with Li Ronghua doing most of the talking, and her having possession of the uncle’s receipt seemed disadvantageous for them.
"It’s over." Nan Zhan spoke and turned to go downstairs first, Jian Si, puzzled, hurriedly called Jian Hedong to follow.
Only when the footsteps of the three faded at the staircase did Li Ronghua say, "This Jian Hedong has grown capable, even daring to seek
Jian Si, somewhat perplexed, whispered softly, "Is it over just like that?" a lawyer."
