Demon spies?
The guard’s words made Rozelite pause.
This was Triumphal City, the capital of the Rhine Kingdom—the political heart of the nation, the safest place in all the land. Even during the great war between humans and demons, this city had never been touched. How could demon spies possibly be here?
“According to reliable intelligence, demons have infiltrated the kingdom. It’s highly likely they plan to target the upcoming coronation ceremony. If you encounter any suspected demons, immediately. The reward will be heavy,” the guard said.
After finishing his warning, the guard reminded Rozelite to find lodging soon, then left.
Once the guards were gone, Rozelite didn’t linger.
She left the alley and quickly found an inn, intending to stay the night. Wells had told her she could return to her old room, but after so long staying in inns, she felt…
What was the phrase? Close to home, but timid to return.
Yet that timidity vanished the moment she heard the innkeeper’s price.
“Twenty copper coins for one night? Boss, why don’t you just rob me outright!”
“Watch your tone, young lady. This is the normal price—fair to all.”
The innkeeper didn’t budge.
With the coronation approaching, people had flocked from across the kingdom to witness it. Prices in Triumphal City had risen slightly, but the innkeeper was right: prices here were always high. Compared to the remote, frozen borderlands, Triumphal’s prices were normal, even stable.
This wasn’t like Flemont, where soaring population, hoarding merchants, and panic buying caused inflation. No—the capital’s high prices came from its location and politics.
The safest city in the kingdom, untouched even during the human-demon war. Fertile lands, bustling trade. Naturally, high prices followed.
In the end, Rozelite gritted her teeth, paid, and got a room key.
The inn had three floors. Her room was on the second.
She climbed the stairs, found the door, pushed it open—
Then threw herself onto the bed, sprawling in the shape of a “大,” motionless, like her spirit had deflated.
It wasn’t fatigue of the body—her stamina was far beyond that.
It was the weight of her thoughts.
Russell dispelled 【Mimicry】.
Her clothes shifted back into pale-blue tendrils.
Just as he was about to withdraw the tendrils into her body, Rozelite spoke.
“Mr. Slime, can you… come out?”
“Come out?”
Russell froze.
“Mhm.”
“Well… I can…”
More tendrils slithered free.
Of course, “tendrils” weren’t truly his. They were simply forms created by 【Shapeshift】. Every tendril was still part of his body.
More and more gathered until, before Rozelite, a pale-blue oval slime sat, translucent like crystal, two floating eyes drifting inside.
He left less than a tenth of himself inside Rozelite to maintain her bodily systems.
After all, Rozelite no longer had a heart.
Which was strange. With her 【Regeneration Lv6】, she should’ve been able to regrow one. Yet so much time had passed, and no sign of it had appeared. Could it be… because Russell had taken the heart’s place?
On the other side, Rozelite blinked, her gaze fixed on the slime with burning intensity.
“What are you—Mmph?!”
Before Russell could finish, Rozelite spread her arms and pulled him tightly against her.
The pliant slime pressed against the soft curves of her body as if trying to fill every space. She held him tight, legs entwining, burying her face deep within.
“Rozelite?”
“….”
She said nothing—just clung tighter.
And Russell felt her emotions more clearly than ever.
Loneliness.
The crushing loneliness of one abandoned by the world. Only by holding Mr. Slime so closely, feeling his warmth and texture, could she feel less alone.
“Everything will be alright.”
Russell rubbed her head with a tendril.
Her breathing grew heavy, her legs clamped tighter around him.
“Mr. Slime, I… I want to…”
…
Alert! Problem detected!
Russell carefully slipped a tendril past her shoulder, nudging open the window.
【Ice Magic Lv5】
Cold wind rushed in, brushing Rozelite’s pale skin. She shivered.
The heat in her body cooled.
“The wind is rather noisy tonight!”
Russell declared.
“Hm?”
Rozelite tilted her head. Mr. Slime was saying strange things again.
“I heard tonight’s moon is especially big and round. Let’s go see it!”
“What’s so good about a moon?”
“Ahem. Better than sitting around, right?”
“…That’s true.”
While she hesitated, Russell pulled most of himself back into her body, leaving only enough to form armor.
Rozelite rose, crossed to the window, and climbed out.
With 【Stealth】 and 【Mimicry】 active, her form melted into the night. Light steps carried her up the wall until she reached the inn’s roof.
She looked up.
But there was no moon. No stars. The sky was swallowed by dark clouds.
“Mr. Slime, there’s no moon tonight…”
“Uh… I mean… well, you know…”
Russell’s eyes darted nervously.
Then they caught on a shadow in an alley below.
“Look, that person looks like a dog! Hahaha…”
“Hm?”
Rozelite followed his gaze.
“Mr. Slime… there’s no one there.”
“What do you mean, no one? Clearly—huh? Really no one?”
Russell froze.
Just as Rozelite said, the alley was empty.
But then why…
Was there an attribute panel floating there?
