“M-my Demon Seed Sword… where is it?”
“How could this be… Without the Demon Seed Sword…”
Anna’s face twisted in terror and panic.
She patted herself down from head to toe, but the so-called Demon Seed Sword was nowhere to be found. For a moment she sat there blankly, utterly at a loss.
“Demon Seed Sword?”
Rozelite tilted her head.
“Mr. Slime, could it be that thing from earlier…?”
“Yeah, probably.”
Russell had more or less pieced it together.
He didn’t know exactly how it worked, but the Demon Seed Sword was clearly a tool demons used to obtain the Holy Sword. Aside from granting skills like 【Demon Seed】 and 【Symbiosis】, it also had one critical skill:
【Hero (False)】
Although it was only level 1.
Russell figured this was something the demons had developed to bypass the Holy Sword’s detection mechanism. Since only a Hero could wield the sword, they made a fake Hero.
In card-game terms, it was like: “This card counts as 【Hero】 under the rules.”
Realizing this, Russell couldn’t help but marvel. Truly, the world was full of brilliant minds. People could come up with the flashiest, strangest tricks imaginable. At the same time, it made him raise his guard even higher against this world.
This world was no simple place.
He had no right to be arrogant.
“Um…”
Anna lifted her head pitifully, gazing at Rozelite.
“Lady Rozelite, could you return the Demon Seed Sword to me? Without it, I really…”
“Sorry, that thing’s gone.”
Rozelite replied casually.
“H-how could that be…”
“And you’re a demon. However you look at it, I have no reason to return a sword to you, do I?”
Rozelite’s delicate brows furrowed slightly, her gaze on Anna carrying clear displeasure.
“Even if you claim that Demon King was once the Hero, who knows if that’s true? If I really let you take the Holy Sword, what good would it do me?”
“I… I can give you money. Lots of money. My kin would be willing to…”
“That sort of thing, I don’t lack.”
This was a lie.
In truth, Rozelite was nearly penniless, to the point where spending a few copper coins already pained her greatly.
But this was a matter of principle.
Even fallen to her current state, Rozelite Othinus was the Seventh Princess of the Rhine Kingdom. She would never betray her country. Now that she knew Anna’s purpose, she was already considering whether to kill her directly or hand her over to the higher-ups in Ato City.
Naturally, Russell sensed Rozelite’s thoughts as well.
After 【Symbiosis】 reached lv6, it had gained more functions; mental resonance with Rozelite was only one aspect.
“I have an idea,” Russell said.
“What if we send her back to the Demon Realm?”
“Eh?”
Rozelite blinked.
“But… doesn’t Mr. Slime really want to eat her? If we just let her go, isn’t that a problem?”
“I’ve never said anything like that. Don’t make me sound like some evil, bloodthirsty, man-eating slime.”
“Haven’t you? Hmm, I guess not. Strange, but I just felt like you did…”
Rozelite muttered under her breath.
After a moment, she asked, “Right, Mr. Slime, why do you want to send her back to the Demon Realm?”
“Because in her current state, she’s controllable.”
Russell said.
“After being seeded, her ability to use magic depends entirely on me. If I forbid her from using magic, she’s nothing more than an ordinary human. No threat to us.”
“If we let her return to the Demon Realm, we can exploit her ability to cross freely between the two realms. She can bring us intelligence from there. And most importantly…”
Russell formed a money gesture with his tentacle-hand.
“Mm…”
Rozelite wavered.
“If sparing her life gets us a fortune, that’s exactly what we need most right now.”
Russell lowered his voice.
“When we return to the capital and she’s outlived her usefulness, we can kill her then. After all, she poses no threat to us.”
“You’re right, Mr. Slime.”
Rozelite calmed down a little.
Thinking carefully, Russell made sense. Killing Anna outright would be wasteful. Since she was completely under Russell’s control, they might as well squeeze some gold from her. Once she had no further value, killing her then would be no problem.
With that thought, Rozelite told Anna, “All right, I’ll give you a chance to live. Go back to the Demon Realm and bring me ten thousand gold coins. If you can do that, Mr. Slime will release you from the Demon Seed.”
“R-really?”
A flash of joy crossed Anna’s face.
But soon her brows knit tightly again.
“But without the Demon Seed Sword… what’s the point of going back? If I can’t complete the elders’ mission, I won’t even have the right to return!”
Her thoughts spiraled, and she begged once more.
“Lady Rozelite, please, you are magnanimous. Give me back the Demon Seed Sword. It means nothing to you, but to me it’s worth more than my life. Without it, I have no reason to live!”
“You can forget about that sword. It’s never being returned to you.”
Rozelite refused without hesitation.
Besides, whether she wanted to or not, the sword had already been eaten by Russell.
“How… how could this happen…”
Anna stood there in a daze, her heart sinking into despair.
She had been born poor, yet hailed as a prodigy for her natural gifts. Elders of her tribe, revered and respected, had pinned their hopes on her, calling her a once-in-a-millennium talent, one with a true chance of succeeding as Demon King.
Through her own efforts, she had finally earned a place as Demon King candidate, swearing to the elders she would return with the Holy Sword.
The Demon Seed Sword was her only proof of candidacy.
Without it, she could never fulfill her mission.
To return home empty-handed, in disgrace…
She could not imagine such a scene. She dared not.
“Hey, have you made up your mind? If not… I can just kill you here and now.”
Rozelite’s cold voice dragged Anna back to reality.
Anna bit her lip hard. She made a dangerous, desperate decision.
She whispered, “Lady Rozelite, I thank you for your offer. I accept. But… the journey back to the Demon Realm is long. Could you give me a weapon for self-defense?”
“A weapon?”
Rozelite’s eyes landed on a woodcutter’s axe.
“That’ll do. Take it and make do.”
“Thank you so much… Lady Rozelite!”
Anna’s voice was laced with almost religious gratitude. She dropped heavily to her knees on the frozen ground, raising her hands high as if to receive a holy relic. Her trembling fingers reached reverently for the axe’s rough wooden handle.
But the instant her fingertips touched it—
Murderous light burst in Anna’s eyes!
All the obedience, despair, and pleading vanished, replaced by savage killing intent! Her body, coiled like a spring, exploded into action!
Her kneeling form shot forward like an arrow loosed from the string. The heavy logging axe in her hands became a lethal arc of black steel, cleaving mercilessly toward Rozelite’s slender, fragile neck!
Fast! Precise! Ruthless!
It contained everything Anna had ever learned, all her madness poured into one strike!
Even without magic, at such close range, it was impossible to dodge completely!
The blade tore through the air.
The cold edge nearly brushed Rozelite’s delicate skin. Anna could even see the princess’s eyes widen slightly in “shock”—frozen stiff, not even reacting to dodge.
It’s done!
Ecstasy erupted in Anna’s heart!
But—
Just as the blade was about to kiss flesh and snap bone—
A pale-blue tentacle slipped lightly from Rozelite’s collar, resting against her neck.
Thud—!
A heavy, muffled sound, like something crashing into wet mud!
The image of steel cutting bone never came.
The tentacle blocked the axe, as if an elastic net had absorbed all the force.
So close!
Just a hair’s breadth from severing her neck…
But no matter how Anna strained, the blade wouldn’t cut through!
“No…”
Anna trembled as she lifted her head.
She saw it.
Rozelite’s face—calm, indifferent, unsurprised.
Anna’s heart plunged into an icy abyss.
The next moment—
Without a word, Rozelite clenched her fist.
She bent low, then launched forward like a spring, punching straight out.
Squelch—!!!
Time seemed to freeze.
Anna’s body arched violently from the impact, like a ragdoll torn apart. Blood gushed from her mouth as she looked down in disbelief—slowly, painfully.
Her vision filled with Rozelite’s arm, dripping with hot blood, buried deep in her abdomen, only her elbow remaining outside.
That seemingly delicate fist had punched through her, erupting from her lower back in a spray of blood and flesh! Her hand was soaked crimson, as if wearing a thin, scarlet glove.
Darkness swallowed Anna’s vision.
