Chapter 531: Chapter 531: Shall we raise Dabao together, waiting for Griffith Squire to come back, okay?
Delphine glanced at the time and stood up, softly persuading Leah: "You should go back and keep searching for Griffith. I still don’t believe anything has happened to him. That man has nine lives."
Griffith had been missing for over half a year. Leah knew deep down that even if nothing bad had occurred, he likely wouldn’t still be in Europe. But with her two closest people in trouble, it was only natural for her to focus on Delphine in the moment.
"I don’t care. If you don’t leave with me, then I’ll stay here with you. Either way, I could just admit to some random crime and end up in here myself." Leah stubbornly choked out through tears.
"Miss Delphine, Miss Squire." Arthur White was brought in by the prison guard and announced, "Young Master Leclair asked me to inform you of something."
Delphine’s face slightly changed, her body tensing up.
Upon hearing this was Ignatius Leclair’s emissary, Leah immediately stood up, turning her back to him, her icy demeanor cutting through sharply: "Get out."
Arthur, unfazed by the reprimand, quickly and clearly conveyed his purpose for coming: "Young Master Leclair said Big Bao is to be given to Miss Delphine. If Miss Delphine does not leave prison today, Big Bao will be sent to the welfare institution tomorrow. As for Little Bao, the elderly matriarch of the Howard Family loves girls, so Little Bao will remain with her at the Howard estate and will not be returned to the Leclair household."
To hand over the Leclair Family’s most cherished great-grandson to Delphine and relocate the younger sister to the Howard Family instead of raising her in the Leclair home—such decisions amounted to monumental sacrifices.
Delphine thought she’d misheard. She suddenly stood up, her voice trembling as she asked, "Is the matriarch a kind person?"
"The elderly lady of the Howard Family is the kindest of souls, especially affectionate toward children. Rest assured, Miss Delphine, she loves Young Master Leclair dearly, so she will of course love this child as well," Arthur explained.
Delphine lowered her eyes, a single tear falling silently as she struggled to react for a long time.
Seeing this sliver of hope, Leah choked up and said, "Delphine, we can raise Big Bao together while we wait for Griffith to return, alright?"
Delphine’s fingers clenched tightly into her palm. To have custody of Big Bao was already beyond what she had hoped for. The fact that Little Bao would not be raised in the Leclair household was enough.
Tears streamed down her face like rain. She nodded, and as the tension she’d carried for days finally released, her vision went dark, and she fainted.
When she woke up again, it was to Big Bao’s commotion.
The rosy-cheeked little bundle clung to his mommy’s finger with his chubby hands, babbling incomprehensible words. His large, jet-black eyes lit up as soon as he saw her open hers, eagerly attempting to crawl toward her. But he couldn’t move on the bed, his little face turning red in frustration.
Delphine smelled the sharp scent of disinfectant. She didn’t care where she was at the moment, and with tears brimming in her eyes, she struggled to sit up, scooping Big Bao into her arms. Only with the soft little bundle held close did she feel a sense of reality.
Leah happened to be coming back with fruit and soup, and upon seeing Delphine awake, her eyes instantly reddened. She tried to smile, saying, "You’re awake?"
Delphine held Big Bao close and looked at Leah, her voice low and choked with emotion: "I’m sorry, Leah."
"Silly girl." Leah walked over, took her hand, and said, "As long as you’re alright, that’s all that matters. Let’s not talk about the past anymore."
Delphine nodded. Though her methods had been harsh, it had been her last resort.
"You’re temporarily out on medical parole. Though the first trial has a verdict, with an appeal, the second trial will certainly result in acquittal." Leah spoke softly, barely raising her voice, afraid that Delphine’s fragile state might not bear it. "Delphine, have you thought about where you’d like to go with Big Bao to start over?"
Delphine lowered her gaze to Big Bao, who was behaving so obediently, and smiled faintly, her voice hoarse as she said, "I want to take him to visit his grandmother."
