Chapter 538: Chapter 538 Even if Richard Shaw knows, he doesn’t dare to say a word.
Delphine saw four-year-old Nicholas push the door open and run straight into her arms. The faint smile on her pale face deepened slightly as she gently said, "Nicholas, my little friend, you’re four years old now—practically a little grown-up."
"Even if Nicholas turns ten, he’ll still be Mommy’s little baby." Nicholas, unbothered, nestled his small head into her embrace, taking in her unique scent. Only then did he feel at ease.
Delphine, amused by his antics, picked him up and kissed his soft cheeks, her voice gentle and a little hoarse. "Nicholas will always be Mommy’s little baby."
"Mommy, I went out just now to buy medicine." Nicholas suddenly remembered the breakfast and medicine he had bought, and quickly tugged her outside.
Delphine noticed he had purchased cold medicine and fever medicine—her gaze flickered slightly. Her health was so frail that she always caught colds and fevers with the change of seasons. Over time, Nicholas had come to believe that taking these medicines was all it took to recover from sickness.
This time, though, she had simply worn herself out. After resting, she’d be fine.
Delphine squatted down and looked at his beautiful little face, speaking softly, "Nicholas, the differences between here and abroad are pretty big. We’ve just moved in, and Mommy isn’t familiar with the area yet. Don’t go out by yourself, okay?"
Nicholas nodded uncertainly, blinking his big, bright eyes. Right, Mommy was so beautiful—he couldn’t let her stay home alone; it made him feel worried.
The mother and son had just finished breakfast when Leah’s call came in.
"Delphine Carter, honestly! If it weren’t for Nicholas leaving a message for me, I wouldn’t have even known you returned to Imperial City!" Leah’s exasperated voice crackled over the phone. "I’m still in Switzerland—it’ll take me until the day after tomorrow to get back!"
Leah had spent most of the past three years in Switzerland. Her final surgery had been a success, finally clearing her body of its lingering issues.
But Griffith Squire had vanished without a trace for three years, and Leah hadn’t returned to Southeast Asia either.
"I was planning to settle down first before telling you." Delphine smiled faintly.
Leah let out a sharp huff, mumbling indignantly, "Sure, sure. I know you better than that. It’s still Nicholas, your little sweetheart, who thought to notify his aunt."
Leah hesitated before continuing. Delphine’s return to Imperial City stirred up a mess—even though Benjamin had stayed there all along, Ignatius Leclair had shifted his focus to Imperial City in recent years. It was like a tangled web of complications. She could only hope nothing blew up in the near future.
"Did you return to Imperial City for Nicholas to start school, or...?"
"Nicholas is about to start kindergarten. I plan to take him abroad for schooling when he’s older. I also want to pursue some studies myself." Delphine’s gaze flickered slightly. She had taken a long time to reach the decision to return to Imperial City. For the past three years, their mother-and-son life had been tranquil. She could tentatively conclude that the Leclair Family had no intention of reclaiming their great-grandson.
Nicholas needed to start school, and she wanted to further her education. Imperial City was also where her daughter lived. If possible, she wanted to catch a glimpse of her daughter someday.
Imperial City was vast—so long as she was cautious, things should be fine.
"Don’t let Richard Major General find out I’m back," Delphine said lightly, her eyes lowered as she whispered.
"Relax, even if Richard Shaw finds out, he wouldn’t dare breathe a word to anyone else." Leah, with her coldly beautiful face, couldn’t help but show a frosty expression when Richard Shaw was mentioned.
Through her connection with Delphine, Richard Shaw would inevitably learn of her return. But if he dared to mention it to Ignatius Leclair, Leah would confront him head-on.
Leah thought about how thoroughly she’d been deceived by that man in the past, and a fire of anger simmered in her chest.
