Chapter 560: Chapter 560: He Had Been Coveting the Beautiful Woman Who Just Moved In for a Long Time
The life Delphine had always dreamed of was just like today: a cozy little house where the soft sunlight lazily filtered through the gaps in the curtains. Benjamin and Nicholas sat on the mat, playing with building blocks, eating together, watching cartoons together. After their bath, they’d put on pajamas, their equally beautiful, wide eyes eagerly waiting for her to tell them bedtime stories.
"Mommy, I want to hear Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Daddy’s witch voice is the best," Benjamin said sweetly, looking at Nicholas’s blue pig pajamas and her own pink bunny pajamas, still finding rabbits the cutest.
"Benjamin, you’ve heard that so many times. Why not try a new story? I want to hear Robinson Crusoe. Mommy says adventure stories are the best," Nicholas scoffed, thinking the Snow White tale was far too childish.
"Really?"
"Trust your brother—I wouldn’t lie to you," Nicholas said, patting Benjamin’s fuzzy little head, adopting the air of a young adult.
Once Benjamin and Nicholas had reached a mutual agreement, Delphine opened Robinson Crusoe and began recounting the adventure story for the two children.
After both the brother and sister had fallen asleep, Delphine gently closed the book, tucked them in, kissed her son, then her daughter, and finally stepped out to bathe and do the laundry. The children had played late into the night, and by the time she had tidied everything, it was nearly midnight. Everyone in the courtyard had already gone to bed.
There was an outdoor basin in the courtyard where Delphine carefully turned on the faucet and started handwashing their clothes.
"Miss Carter, working so late, huh?" In the dead stillness of the night, the sudden voice of a man startled Delphine so much she visibly trembled.
Turning around, she saw Mr. Zhao, the landlord’s son—he had somehow appeared behind her without her noticing. The man wore shorts and a vest, his eyes fixed intensely on her thin nightgown—which she had worn after bathing—while the smell of alcohol overwhelmed the air around him.
Delphine’s expression shifted slightly. The nightgown, though modest in design, did little to shield her from the unwelcome and intoxicated gaze of the man. Her instincts quickly sharpened, alert to danger.
"I’m finished already," she said coldly, lifting the clothes basin and preparing to leave.
Mr. Zhao staggered forward, blocking her way as he slurred and hurriedly muttered, "What’s the rush? I see your clothes aren’t done yet. Come to my place and use the washing machine! You, a woman with kids, must have it hard."
As he spoke, his hand began reaching out, attempting to grab her.
Delphine swiftly positioned the wooden basin between them, her tone sharp and unyielding: "We’re all just neighbors here. If any trouble breaks out, Mr. Zhao, as a local, it’s you who’ll face the consequences. Rumors would ruin your reputation, and it wouldn’t be easy to find a wife afterward, would it?"
Crabs had recently come into season, and Mr. Zhao had indulged in a late-night feast of crabs and alcohol with his friends at a nearby open-air restaurant. Upon returning home and spotting Delphine doing laundry, his drunken mind had immediately latched onto her.
From behind, the woman’s slender figure appeared both tall and delicate, her curves graceful. Her still-damp hair, washed after bathing, carried a faint fragrance in the nocturnal air.
Ever since the beautiful new tenant had moved in, Mr. Zhao had found himself increasingly fixated on her. In the past, he’d noticed how a pale, clean-cut man often visited her home and had cursed her under his breath as being improper. Now, with that man hardly coming around anymore, his alcohol-fueled thoughts were emboldened.
Under the shadowy night’s cloak, looking at Delphine Carter, he felt her fair skin glowing like fine jade, her features even more stunning. The alcohol drove him forward, though he hadn’t planned to do anything extreme—perhaps just take advantage of her lightly. She was alone with children; surely she wouldn’t dare make a fuss. And if she did, he’d just accuse her of seducing him.
