Chapter 575: Chapter 575: Has Li Shao been without a woman for these three years?
The study was deathly silent.
After Delphine finished speaking, a slight tinge of fear set in. But at this point, no matter how scared she was, she couldn’t retreat even a single step—for Nicholas’ sake.
The man sat with his long legs crossed, his phoenix eyes dark and profound as he stared at the pale and delicate woman before him. After a long moment, he stood up, towering over her as he closed the distance and said in a low, hoarse voice, "Reconcile? Hmm?"
Those words were spoken with profound meaning and an agonizing slowness. The implication was intriguing.
"So, you think I brought Nicholas here to reconcile with you?" Ignatius’ gaze was deep as he pressed her step by step, his tone unyielding.
Delphine instinctively stepped back until she was cornered at the door. Her face paled slightly, her gaze dropped low, allowing her eyes to catch nothing but the man’s long, straight legs. She replied coldly, "Since it’s not, then there’s no need for us to see each other again. I’ll take Nicholas and leave."
She made a move to leave.
The man stretched out an arm, bracing it against the wall, trapping her between his tall figure and the wall. He inclined his head, looking down at her palm-sized, delicate face and slender, girlish figure with dark, intense eyes. He said in a low voice, "If I ever catch you getting cozy with Wilbur Turner again, I’ll take Nicholas back to the South Seas."
His voice was deep and gentle, but the words he uttered carried an icy warning within.
Delphine froze, staring at the man before her in disbelief. So, even if she was a woman he had discarded, she wasn’t allowed to marry, wasn’t allowed to fall in love? She was only permitted to live like some pitiful, abandoned thing, trembling in a corner, waiting for the occasional scrap of benevolence from him? And if she refused, he’d take her Nicholas away?
Delphine let out a cold laugh. She had always been someone with a slow temper, easy-going and content, wanting only to raise Nicholas properly and live a quiet life. But now, provoked by this man, she suddenly felt a surge of rebellion. She sneered, "Mr. Leclair, could it be that you haven’t had a single woman in the past three years? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have the free time to meddle in your ex-wife’s private life."
She shoved Ignatius aside and hurried downstairs to find Nicholas. If she stayed any longer with this man, she feared she might lose her sanity.
Ignatius watched her hastily retreating figure, his face darkening slightly as a glimmer of anger flitted through his phoenix eyes. The truth was, he really hadn’t been with any woman in the past three years. Was she mocking him?
The germophobic Mr. Leclair, who was incurably fastidious, was for the first time acutely aware that perhaps he truly was starved. Why else would he find his attention inexplicably fixed on Delphine Carter?
Delphine went downstairs and found Nicholas and Benjamin. The two little rascals were playing happily with the dog. When they noticed Delphine, their eyes lit up as they dashed toward her, one on each side, wrapping their small arms around her.
Benjamin chirped sweetly, "Mommy, look, a big doggie!"
The two little ones together were still not as tall as the Samoyed they were playing hide-and-seek with. They were covered in sweat from running around.
Delphine’s heart melted into a puddle as she crouched down and hugged her two little treasures tightly.
Ignatius waited for a long time. He waited until the sweet laughter of children outside faded away, until night fell, and until Benjamin had finished his bath, wearing a little nightgown and stepping into small slippers to knock on the door. Only then did he finally shift his stiff posture.
"Daddy, it’s time for dinner," the little girl announced, her dark eyes gleaming brightly like lustrous pearls.
The man stood up, taking the little girl’s hand as they went downstairs together.
"Daddy, can I make Nicholas’ mommy my mommy too?" At the dining table, Benjamin spoke with eager anticipation. "I’ll eat one less lollipop every day. No, no, Benjamin won’t eat lollipops anymore."
The man looked at his sugar-obsessed daughter, who’d already ruined one of her teeth. His phoenix eyes narrowed deeply, but he said nothing.
