Chapter 637: Chapter 637: The child we lost, I give my life to return it, can you come back to my side?
"You care for Wilbur?" The handsome man with a cold demeanor and slightly pale complexion stepped out from the tearoom and spoke heavily.
Delphine’s feelings for Cassius Turner were more of friendship than romantic attraction. But in front of Madam Howard, she had to make her words unequivocal, ensuring she would relay them to Ignatius Leclair—so that marriage decisions would remain free from interference moving forward. With Madam Howard overseeing things, Ignatius wouldn’t act out too brazenly in public.
What she hadn’t anticipated was that Ignatius had been there the entire time, overhearing every word. Her body stiffened instantly, and she fell silent.
Madam Howard caught sight of the dark red mark on his wrist and immediately panicked, standing up to say, "How could your wrist end up like this? What happened?"
The man lowered his gaze, staring at the gash, his expression stoic. In a deep voice, he replied, "It’s nothing, Grandma."
"It’s bleeding—how can it be ’nothing’? I’ll go get the first aid kit." Madam Howard quickly left to fetch the kit, leaving only the two of them facing off in the living room.
"Coming to the Howard Family won’t work. Grandma doesn’t control me." Ignatius spoke coldly, his eyes dark and unwavering as they locked onto hers.
"The issue with Cassius Turner—was that your doing?" Delphine furrowed her brows and asked in a low voice.
"Yes." The man admitted without hesitation, his words deliberate and firm. "I did it to bring you back to me."
"Back to you, so you can drive me away a third time?" Delphine stared at the man’s handsome face and sneered.
"Then tell me, what must I do for you to come back?" His thin lips pressed tightly together before, after a long pause, he uttered in the darkest voice imaginable, "I’ll repay you with my life. Can I give my life for the child we lost? If I sacrifice myself, will you return to me?"
After saying this, the man gracefully picked up the fruit knife from the table and, turning the blade in his hand, plunged it into his own chest. Blood seeped out, quickly staining his thin V-neck wool sweater crimson.
Ignatius Leclair’s handsome features slowly turned ghostly pale. Pain began to trace through them, yet his phoenix-shaped eyes remained dark and intense, fixed on Delphine without wavering. His hand continued to press the blade deeper into his chest, and blood gushed forth.
Madam Howard returned with the first aid kit, only for it to slip from her grasp, falling to the ground with a dull thud.
Delphine shuddered violently, holding up Ignatius, as she watched Madam Howard’s face turn deathly pale, nearly fainting from fright. In a trembling voice, she said, "Call an ambulance."
"Yeats Howard, Yeats Howard—take the children outside now, immediately!" Madam Howard rushed into the courtyard, shouting, "Make the call for the ambulance right now!"
Delphine’s body trembled uncontrollably, her lips ashen, her eyes moist. Fear and despair consumed her. How could he do this? Threatening her life in front of an elder and children—did he not care about her, Madam Howard, or the children? Her eyes brimmed with tears as she broke into sobs. What could she do now? What was she supposed to do?
The man grabbed her wrist, propping himself up halfway, attempting to wipe away her tears despite the evident torment in his voice as he spoke lowly, "Don’t cry. I only wanted to bring you back to me."
Ignatius’s complexion had reached a terrifying level of pallor, yet he stubbornly fought against losing consciousness.
Delphine sobbed uncontrollably, looking at Madam Howard as streams of tears rolled down her cheeks. With staggered steps, Madam Howard entered, supporting her most beloved grandson, pleading, "Delphine, I’m begging you on behalf of his grandmother. Say yes to him—otherwise, this child might really lose his life. What about Benjamin and Nicholas? What about me? What about the Leclair Family?"
The man’s phoenix-shaped eyes, dark as ink, stayed fixed on her without blinking. Delphine, utterly frozen and shrouded in despair, found herself spiraling into an overwhelming abyss. For years, with Nicholas by her side, she had painstakingly clawed her way out of the darkness; she had forced herself to harden against him, to put the pain of the past into a tidy box and live her life in peace. And now, would she really return to him, repeating the same tragedy all over again?
