Chapter 640

Chapter 640: Chapter 640: If She Is Willing to Return to His Side
Ignatius Leclair woke up the next day during the daylight hours. When he regained consciousness, the ward was eerily quiet, with only Richard Shaw sitting in a wheelchair by the window, bathed in the rare warmth of a winter sun, engrossed in the book on his lap.
The man’s handsome yet pale face darkened slightly, his strong brows furrowing. Why did waking up feel so different from what he had imagined?
"The old lady and Delphine stayed by your side all day and night; I told them to go back and rest. As for the others from the Howard Family, they were probably scared by you—hovering outside but too timid to come in." Richard Shaw, perfectly composed, glanced at the thick volume in his hands and, noticing Ignatius was awake, commented casually.
Ignatius tried to sit up, but the knife wound was deep, and any movement tugged at the injury. The man grumbled in a low, displeased voice, "Why are you so idle?"
Richard abruptly closed the book in his hand, let out a cold laugh, and quipped, "I’m not as idle as you — so idle that you start playing around with knives. Aren’t you afraid of an early grave, leaving behind no wife or kids?"
Ignatius’s phoenix-shaped eyes darkened deeply, his pale lips curling faintly, and he responded placidly, "I aimed precisely; it wouldn’t kill me."
Richard listened to his nonchalant tone, nearly wanting to smack him over the head with the book in his hand. Decades of brotherhood meant he understood him well—Ignatius never fought battles he hadn’t prepared for. But drawing blood like that — if his hand had slipped just a bit — who could guarantee the outcome?
Ignatius truly couldn’t let Delphine go. Over the years, this rational and detached "old Leclair" had never stumbled so catastrophically over a woman.
"You scared the old lady and Delphine badly — they were crying rivers yesterday," Richard sighed. "From now on, don’t resort to such extreme tactics. Take things step by step instead."
Ignatius’s handsome face revealed a hint of contemplation. He knew his methods had been excessive, but he no longer had time to wait or proceed slowly. He had to play the ruthless card.
After this incident, the old lady was likely now fully on his side, aiding him in winning Delphine back. As for Delphine — though he couldn’t play this trick every day — she probably wouldn’t dare approach Wilbur Turner so casually anymore, afraid of provoking him. Ignatius squinted; that self-inflicted stab wound wasn’t in vain.
"The same tactic only works once. Do it a second time, and it’s useless," he remarked unhurriedly.
Richard watched his calculated demeanor, recognizing the same Ignatius Leclair whose rationality always triumphed above all. However, the weight of Delphine Carter in his heart now seemed equal to half his life. Richard couldn’t help but wonder—if that girl couldn’t reciprocate the man’s feelings in the future, what kind of spectacle would unfold?
"Anyway, take care of yourself. Treat the girl well—don’t frighten her anymore, and don’t impulsively push her away again. Otherwise, you’ll end up wallowing in agony later." Richard felt like he’d become the nagging housekeeper of the group.
Ignatius, for once, didn’t retort, his gaze profound. If she truly chose to return to his side, he vowed to treat her well, to make amends for everything in the past, ensuring she wouldn’t endure even the smallest hurt.
"Alright, I get it. Now leave. Don’t hang around here — no one else will dare to visit as long as you’re here." Ignatius expressed emotionlessly, urging him to go.
Richard snorted in laughter. Just waking up, and already kicking him out—the man clearly wanted to see Delphine. Hah, a guy who tosses aside friends the moment a woman is involved.
"Considering you’ve endured such flesh-and-blood suffering despite your age, I’ll play the good Samaritan to the end." Richard dialed the old lady from the Howard Family, notifying her that Ignatius had regained consciousness. Where the old lady went, Delphine would inevitably follow.
