Chapter 137: Chapter 137: There Was Never Much Feeling Between Us
Sean raised an eyebrow and said indifferently, "I didn’t attend your father’s family banquet."
Jude, next to him, added, "Claire isn’t actually Tristan Lockwood’s secretary; she’s a lawyer."
"A lawyer?" Jared was somewhat surprised as he sat back down at the table. "Then why would she pretend to be Tristan’s secretary?"
Jude filled his glass with wine and said, "She has a rather special relationship with Tristan."
Being smart people, there was no need to explain further; they all naturally understood what "special" meant in this circle.
Jared grew interested, glanced at Sean beside him, and joked, "I heard rumors recently that your nephew was engaged to the Adler family’s heiress. So what’s his deal with this Lawyer Hale?"
Sean casually glanced at the red wine glass in front of him and said nonchalantly, "When did you become so gossipy? Planning to start a gossip magazine?"
"I’m just asking."
Jared smirked slightly.
Sean glanced at him, noticing the amusement in his eyes. He casually tugged at his tie and said, "Don’t get any ideas about her."
Jared laughed, "Sean, you know me, I rarely agree with others, especially with you."
"She’s with the Lockwood Family."
Sean took a sip of red wine and caught the flash of surprise in Jared’s eyes.
"If you’re really keen on pursuing her, that’s your business. It has nothing to do with me. But considering our past friendship, I’m just giving you a heads up, take care of yourself."
"I’m just casually talking."
Jared swirled his wine glass, the dark red liquid obscured and unclear.
He gave Jude a look, and Jude, understanding, left the private room with Ariel.
Only when the two of them were left did Jared say, "Did you find Jade Sutton? I haven’t seen her lately."
"We divorced."
Jared was taken aback, "No way? Didn’t you return to the country specifically to find her? Why divorce after finding her?"
Sean was very calm, "In this world, nothing is impossible. There wasn’t much affection between us to begin with, so divorce is quite normal."
"But Jade looks so much like her; didn’t you agree to marry Jade because of that at the start? After this, you won’t find someone who looks like her so easily."
As for the woman in Sean’s heart, others might not know, but Jared knew very well.
During those years abroad, they were in the same development team, and another woman in the team was the one in Sean’s heart.
Unfortunately, she met an untimely death.
Coincidentally, after the woman’s death, Sean met Jade, who bore an uncanny resemblance to her.
For Sean, who was grief-stricken from losing his love, this was undoubtedly a lifeline delaying his emotional sentence.
"No matter how much she looks like her, it’s only the outward appearance. The more I interacted with Jade, the more I realized how vastly different they were in temperament. The more I looked, the less she resembled her."
Jared was stunned, suddenly having a fleeting thought of Claire Hale’s image in his mind.
Facial features wise, Claire had no resemblance to that woman at all.
Even temperament-wise, Claire’s cold demeanor was worlds apart from the woman’s bold and vibrant nature.
Yet inexplicably, Jared thought of Claire.
"Speaking of Jade, you might as well ask her directly instead of asking me; it’d be quicker."
Sean suddenly lifted his gaze toward Jared, smirked, and said, "After returning to Riverbend, didn’t she rely on your protection to boldly pursue Tristan? You two have been in touch all along, haven’t you?"
Jared paused, then chuckled and said, "I didn’t intentionally keep it from you. Seeing how fondly Jade likes Tristan, I didn’t want to shock you. But hearing you now, since you have no feelings for her, it doesn’t matter whom she pursues, right?"
Sean withdrew his gaze from Jared and didn’t say another word.
After finishing his wine, he stood up, draped his jacket over his arm, and left without even saying goodbye.
...
After Claire Hale left the private room, she had lost her appetite for the meal.
She settled the bill and exited the restaurant, finding Tina Hayes and Joy Sharp waiting for her on the street.
Joy’s face was pale. Upon seeing Claire, she tried to smile, but the effort was more pitiful than a cry.
Claire walked over to hug her and said, "If you’re upset, just cry it out. Don’t hold back."
Joy buried her head in Claire’s embrace, initially restrained but gradually trembling, her sobs muffled against Claire.
Claire felt equally upset.
Joy was someone with no hidden motives, a truly kind-hearted girl.
Her affection for Jude Jacobs seemed blind to many, but her pure intentions were rare and precious.
Yet all too often, those with true hearts end up hurt the most.
Genuine feelings are often met not with sincerity but with exploitative harm.
When Joy finally pulled away from Claire, her eyes were swollen, and she dejectedly said, "I’ll head home first."
Claire said, "Let us take you."
Joy shook her head and turned to Tina, "President Hale, you should take Tina to see a doctor; she got a deep cut on her hand from glass earlier."
Claire quickly checked Tina’s injury.
Tina seemed unfazed, clenching her fist to stop Claire from seeing, and said, "It’s nothing, just a minor issue!"
Claire firmly pried open her hand, revealing several alarming gashes, with tiny shards of glass seemingly embedded.
"We must go to the hospital."
Claire insisted.
Tina initially wanted to refuse but swallowed her words when faced with Claire’s no-nonsense expression.
She thought Claire did have a bit of the domineering CEO style when she got serious.
With Claire having drunk some alcohol, she couldn’t drive herself.
After putting Joy in a taxi, she was planning to call another one to take Tina to the hospital.
Just then, a black Range Rover slowly pulled up in front of them.
Claire hesitated for a moment, finding the car quite familiar.
The rear window rolled down, and Sean sat by the window, saying calmly, "Get in."
Claire hesitated slightly, but seeing Tina’s injury, and realizing it wasn’t easy to catch a cab at this time, she didn’t refuse.
Tina sensibly opened the passenger door, while Sean’s driver was at the wheel, leaving Claire to sit alongside Sean in the back seat.
